  • DIY Washing Machine.
Based on PappaPreppers design with some changes. I used 3/4" galvanized conduit with 2 hubs so a pole wouldn't be running through the washer. We'll see how they withstand rust. Make sure you smooth all you drill holes, cuts, and cut off any screws/bolt sticking into the white barrel, so nothing snags your clothing. I can get this baby spinning, but it wants to take off. Any ideas on how to secure so I can really spin my clothes?
Things I'd change... I'd make my stand a bit higher. I'd cut the blue barrel opening larger. Put drain in middle bottom of blue barrel, not on the end. You want it at the lowest point. I could have done this much better. Add a large drain or it drains a bit slow. I still need a slip to put around the turning handle. , so next time I'd reduce the handle to 1/2" so it won't be so big in your hand with a cover over it.
    My costs..$50 barrels, 3/4" x 4" galvanized steel nipples (2), $3.64, bronze chest latches (2) $3.51, 3/4" 90 degree elbow fittings (2) - $7.52, 3/4" x 5" steel nipple (1) - $4.96, 3/4" x 8" nipple $7.94, 3/4" black iron cap $4.70, Siemens 3/4" Type RX Hub (2) - $13.90. I had to buy a 2x4 for about $3.75.
Old hinges I had and used old stuff lying around for spacers.
Total cost about $100 depending on what you have to buy. Luckily I had all the tools I needed.

I saw another version of this with some construction type mesh material and my brain said "snags." But this version with the barrels is muuuuch better. Much easier to file down any plastic burs in the small barrel. Seriously thinking about going this route in my next home, because modern washers are kinda sad.

Yes, I did file the burrs some. The ones on the exterior are great at catching pet hair!

You actually only need to agitate back and forth. Also, soaking between agitating really helps and reduces the amount of work.

That's impressive and Not only that but it washes better than the crapy so-called high efficiency washers they have today because the new Modern washing machines they have today are Nothing but Garbage.

Update... I added a hinge and closure, so there are two of each on the white barrel.
