This song still make me cry after all these years.
We are all in this together, people.
Somehow the Brotherhood Of Man got lost in the living.
It's way past time we reclaimed it, don't you think?

Great choice The Hollies. great reaction. And a really good Hollies Choice is " I'm alive" one of their very early 60s songs, WELL worth a reaction. Raw 60s music. And for more raw 60s music, see The Yardbirds, "For Your Love" ,"Heart Full Of Soul", "Shapes of things", "Dazed and confused", and so many more. And see where Led Zeppelin and Cream, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, and more, started

'It's a long long road...' from birth to death, and it's so essential that 'while we're on the way' that we share. Strip away all that divides us and we all become the same, human beings needing love and one another. It's all we have, one another, we are all each other's reason and purpose. If my brother (figuratively, meaning any stranger) is not happy, how can I be? Our welfare is each other's concern, because when we care about each other, we are at peace. Sadly, times occur (like what we are all in today), where we need to remind ourselves of these facts, and due to our complex human natures, we fight and struggle to bring ourselves back to peace.

from what i've found out on line..ya...so..
the song is from the statement of a priest. He saw a little boy walking to town, with his even smaller brother on his back.
The priest asked " where are you going?" "into town for some food" was the reply.
This was in the Great Depression in America , circa 1929-1939.
The priest then said "I'll carry him for while for you"
The Child replied " He ain't heavy...he's my Brother".

The album notes is very misleading for what it leaves out. The phrase actually originates in an 1884 book, The Parables of Jesus, then in 1918 it was adopted for raising money by polio charities. The Boys Home adopted it for marketing purposes in 1943 and the Spencer Tracy movie made it famous. As a result it became a quote used by soldiers rescuing wounded buddies. In 1969 it had been used by a soldier in the Vietnam War, and the words became attached to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. It was in this context of the Vietnam War that the song was written, and of course the historic cultural context of Spencer Tracy and boys town was part of the Zeitgeist, but Vietnam was a huge part of that as well. As a member of the Vietnam generation I remember well the late night discussions of the layers of meaning in this song back when it was all over the radio, and some of us had bought the record.

I realize that the phrase, "He ain't heavy, he's my brother", came from the Boy's Town monument. But I want to offer a slightly different take: This song was during the Vietnam War. There was a lot of racial tension during the time of this song and was tearing our country apart. In the past, blacks were referred to as "the white man's burden." The Hollies were in tune with that tension and were trying to say that we need to change our ways and don't think of them that way. The Boy's Town inscription may have been the inspiration, but I suggest that the song resonated because of the racial application: Blacks aren't any burden at all. They are our brothers. This is a song about mending the racial divide. If you are a member of The Hollies who disagrees, please tell me otherwise. As a side note, sociologists and economists now realize that through wage and housing discrimination that created a permanent underclass, it was we whites that were really the black man's burden.

WTH?! Dammit man, some woman get a hold of this song & fucked it all up! They do this to everything, Movies, Music, everything! Originally the video in the background was actually meaningful, instead of this Fluffy Crap that belongs kept with all the other Cute Little Cat videos! The original had a background of Soldiers helping their wounded Brothers in Arms get to Safety and Medical Attention and carried some truly Heavy Emotional Weight and it was Meaningful! Women! Keep your hands off of our shit! I swear to God, they just can't resist pissing all over anything Meaningful. Had a favoriye movie of mine, some of you guys might know it? It was called "Vanishing Point." Was an awesome flick.where this Automobile Delivery Driver has to get an awesome 1971 Dodge Challenger from Arizona to California, but only has a limited time in which to get the car there. Long story short, he makes a bet with his Speed Dealer who bets that he can't make it in time and so, on goes the movie. Yea well about 4 years after tat movie came out, some women got a hold of Movie Script and rewrote it & fucked that movie all up! So now the man driving from Arizona to California was now some Father that had to get there in the short amount of time because otherwise he may lose custody of his son if he doesn't make it to Family Court in time to fight his Ex for custody?! WTH? It was a completely different movie AND it sucked ass. "But when you do a Google search for the movie "Vanishing Point," by default you will be taken to this Abortion, created by your women who eanted things to be cleaner, for little Johnny?! ARGH! Leave Men's treasures alone, women. Thety're not for you! Keep Smiling...
