As someone who is a little taller and works out a lot I really appreciated the oversize tee trend, simply because it made it much easier to find fitting clothes. Most times I have to gamble if the shirts I want actually fit, oversize solved that problem somewhat

There are still people that rock throw back jerseys and starter jackets on the regular. People still rock skinny jeans and combat boots. These fashion influencers mainly push an agenda and rarely have their finger on the pulse of society and what people are really into wearing. Leave it up to influencers and they’d have everyone dressing exactly the same. Now how boring would that be? Don’t worry about trends wear what you like and what you think looks good on you.

Eh I don’t think they are pushing an “agenda” I think they just follow other influencers who do the same shit and it creates this echo chamber of baggy jeans and sambas. Especially doesn’t help if they do sponsorships with brands specifically fast fashion brands who just shift product to match trends.

I think to the more plain/basic fashion crowd just learning about shoe design, Tabi's can be seen as trendy but they've been around for centuries and have a huge cult following. People who reach for tabi's also don't care about trends, they like the artsy look.

Yes, it is all a marketing trap. It used to take years for a trend to catch on, especially if you were in Japan and taking on an American trend. Now with the internet, aka lightening fast sharing of information, trends can be communicated to any place in the world in seconds. Also the term "trend" has changed. It used to mean a lot of people was wearing/doing something new; but now one single celeb wears something and it is somehow a "trend" as reported by big dollar social media like Yahoo news. One person is NOT a trend.

  • @hipstermike
    @hipstermike 3 месяца назад +13

I’m a big fan of the Acne trompe l'oeil jeans they did. I prefer it over the actual distressed jeans a lot of designers put out(with some exceptions). While it is a statement piece not meant for all wardrobes or people’s styles, when worn with the right outfit they slot in perfectly. As many things are cyclical in fashion the wide/baggy will come and go and come around again. I still throw on a pair of skinnies once in a while even though most have moved past the look.

Influencers rarely measure up to someone my size and build (6’4 220 lbs. ) athleisure gorpcore punk fashion goth core tech wear work wear etc etc it’s not going away. It’s just not click worthy for influencers any longer but at the end of the day these looks will always be seen in public. Stop buying into the agenda and narrative you see on social media where they convince people to turnover their entire wardrobe to be part of the next “in” look.

I still have my eye on dirty jeans (not ripped) from Acne. Lol. But you are right. I'm also wearing down my raw denims and looking forward to how they break down.
Trends may die out but there will be sub-cultures still wearing them. i.e. oversized and baggy is dominant now but there are still people rocking slim. It will be the same when baggy goes out of the limelight. It's cyclical.

A very timely and well thought out video James! I've really started to reevaluate how I view clothes and my relationship with them, particularly trends. I'm not sure what's caused it, but I seem to be increasingly disillusioned by trends to the point where most of them feel very unappealing and I'm pretty much done with what is essentially a neverending cycle. I'm not trying to begrudge anyone who follows trends or say they're all bad necessarily because they certainly have a place, but I think it's a topic that would do anyone a bit of good to have a little introspection about.

Heavily distressed/paint-splattered jeans are so vile and always have been imho. I remember when Diesel pretty much revolutionised jeans with the Zathan 772s. Lovely quality denim in really cool 'washes' - the 772s being the absolute classics. And crazy expensive for their time. BUT of course, they had to keep things moving, and ended up making insanely vile ripped and splattered jeans. I guess that all trends have to go to excess before they finally die off!

Essentials oversized hoodies and sweats have always been a staple and mainstay in fashion. It’s not going away. What will go away is the influencers pushing it. What we see on social media (RUclips Tik Tok etc) is just a small specific microcosm of what people are wearing or into. These trend setters barely represent the general public and what they’re wearing or seeking out. If you’re an influencer yeah you have to change and move through trends at a rapid pace or you’ll lose credibility and relevancy to your audience but the public as a whole don’t rock with these trends. When oversized pants were a thing a lot of people were still rocking fitted pants. Trends only matter to influencers. Nothing truly dies. Hell before the influencers were pushing the oversized boxy agenda there was a part of the culture that’s been rocking that look for years.

I disagree about oversized tops. It's not a trend. It's a style. And I'm not talking about the exaggerated Balenciaga type of oversized. Just regular oversized.

I must admit I've really enjoyed getting into baggier clothes. I got a couple of really colourful jumpers for the winter, which I still wear - thanks cold rainy England - but I feel more comfortable in myself wearing them. I still haven't pulled the trigger on a pair of chunkier trainers to complete the look, despite having a couple of gift cards from friends, and am facing for the first time stuff fizzing in and out of stock [primarily looking at New Balance].
In general though, being happy in my choices in general and not being fussed how I might appear to others has been really healthy for me.
The style suits, so I'm having fun finding variations on it. :)
Thank you for another ace video, James. A real pleasure to watch :)

oversize jeans use to be trendy in urly 90is ,, and was dead after only 2 years , animal print was trendy in mid 80is , and also don t lasted long , what wee will see next is fluo /neon clothing ,, that was popular in 80is ,

curious where you live - @the point about seeing things online vs in person. If not in a cultural center that seems to be a through line with most digitally originated trends. Also, @tabis, I feel like they are a consistent visual disruptor, due to their avant garde silhouette. I feel like tabis have and do get trendy once a year, whenever the trend cycle gets predictable. then they naturally fall out of style, as people who do not resonate with the actual values of the shoe and were only into the disruption-trend element of it, are turned off again.
