Devastation in Ft. Myers beach area is palpable, as residents wonder what what comes next

  • Devastation in Southwest Florida following Hurricane Ian’s destruction is palpable. ABC Action News reporter Heather Leigh, and photojournalist Michael Brantley spoke to residents and heard their stories for days. You can hear the ringing of security systems off in the distance, helicopters in the air, and debris sloshing up against the side of mangled boat docks and shorelines. You can also see the despair in people's faces as they look around in awe of Mother Nature and the sheer power it can produce.

    It's really heartbreaking,feel so sorry what they have to undergo,life is so strange, things happen in the twinkle of an eye, starting all over it's gonna be hard but to the ones that survived this ordeal despite losing their homes, always remember the life is more important, sometime you would be able to get it back, there's hope, there's a better tomorrow.

    It's horrible to see Fort Myers Beach like this. I was just there a few days before the hurricane hit visiting my parents. They just moved to Fort Myers 3 months ago and their place was completely underwater. I'm just so glad they evacuated the area beforehand. It's still heartbreaking but end of the day property can be rebuilt but lives can't.

      Odd that you say that because the day of the storm I told my family this could be Katrina 2.0. Living here for 12 years I know the area well enough (and the history of storm surges), and seeing the angle Ian started to take, I knew we'd be in trouble being on the 'dirty side' of the huge storm. It was too big and powerful to not be real bad. But still never saw _this_ coming. Helicopters (US Army, Coast Guard, many others) flying back and forth all day and some carrying large storage containers like you see on barges, it is disturbing to know what's going on out there.

      When you live in Florida, you get so many "false flag" HUGE hurricanes ...it becomes difficult to discern when real trouble is hitting. And many of these people had survived multiple hurricanes, but this one was the biggee we always talk about. THEN... for days, and hours upon hours, the news media and EXPERTS could only talk about TAMPA. They were late to the ball game when they finally called Ft. Myers/Port Charlotte as landfall ground zero, and TAMPA was fine. That spelled real trouble for many people and a HUGE hurricane hit them quite quickly directly in the face. I used to live in Ft Myers Beach and Sanibel - I am so sorry for my old neighbors' and fellow residents' loss. This one was so bad that it will be many years before normal comes back to this area.

    If wind blows to an area means that there is a low atmospheric pressure in that area and there is a demand of air to normalize the atmospheric pressure there. If we can send some compressed air to that place immediately in fighter plane so that the atmospheric pressure is slightly increased then wind will not blow that fast as otherwise. Try this next time when there is a warning of hurricane.

      @@santhoshkumar-vd7jo I am an engineer by trade - the first part of experimentation is knowing the parameters.
      YOU can experiment all by yourself - using a small scale representation. Try creating a tornado as many have done on youtube. Then introduce the compressed air - you can prove/disprove your theory all by yourself and put on youtube and save the planet.
      Knock yourself out - PROVE ME WRONG - The greatest science discoveries have been done by individuals.
      I await your results, but I think you'll find the scale of the hurricanes is much too large to be affected by compressed air.

    • @TheWirdbird
      @TheWirdbird Год назад +1

      No idea. Perhaps it isn’t possible with a sail boat. Boat/yacht with motor- might have a better chance to get somewhere safe, but, then again, maybe 5 to 10 days isn’t enough time. Maybe someone will answer.

    • @HulaShack1
      @HulaShack1 Год назад +1

      Hate to tell you but it was the old timers that allowed the building of the high rises. It was the old timers that never upgraded the hurricane windows, straps for their roofs, etc. It was the old timers that ignored the mandatory evacuations. They cannot say they didn't have a ride or a place to go and yes, pets were allowed. They were offered rides, shelters, food and safety and yet they decided to stay. 4 of their homes behind me crashed into my home. They crashed into my backyard, pool and garage. Overdevelopment has nothing to do with this hurricane. Not listening to mandatory evacuations is the mistake that was made. Had everyone listened, no one would have died.

    4 months before Ian hit, condo owners in Fort Myers Beach unleashed a pack of separate lawsuits trying to stop the 'Low-light Turtle Law' which for some years has required all lights on the beach to be fitted with yellow/amber lenses for the benefit of baby sea turtles emerging from their nests. When sea turtles are born, they instinctively run toward the light. Historically, the land was dark and the ocean was light from the reflections of the moon and stars. With the condos and hotels bars and businesses all lighting up the beach, baby turtles have been running to the highway. The yellow and amber lenses helped the turtles. So do not feel sorry for these nasty selfish inconsiderate people of Fort Myers Beach. Thank Ian instead that the turtles may yet live.
