Devastation in Ft. Myers beach area is palpable, as residents wonder what what comes next

- Devastation in Southwest Florida following Hurricane Ian’s destruction is palpable. ABC Action News reporter Heather Leigh, and photojournalist Michael Brantley spoke to residents and heard their stories for days. You can hear the ringing of security systems off in the distance, helicopters in the air, and debris sloshing up against the side of mangled boat docks and shorelines. You can also see the despair in people's faces as they look around in awe of Mother Nature and the sheer power it can produce.
It's really heartbreaking, feel so sorry what they have to undergo, life is so strange, things happen in the twinkle of an eye, starting all over it's gonna be hard but to the ones that survived this ordeal despite losing their homes, always remember the life is more important, sometime you would be able to get it back, there's hope, there's a better tomorrow.
We went thru the devistating California Camp fire 4 years ago and we are still trying to move forward. Disasters such as this scar you for life I believe. But coming thru it , surviving is a blessing not to take for granted.
Years ago when I first learned of hurricanes I heard that they were so unpredictable! This was supposed to hit Tampa but it stayed south. Poor Ft. Myers . . .
It's horrible to see Fort Myers Beach like this. I was just there a few days before the hurricane hit visiting my parents. They just moved to Fort Myers 3 months ago and their place was completely underwater. I'm just so glad they evacuated the area beforehand. It's still heartbreaking but end of the day property can be rebuilt but lives can't.
I don't have much. But to lose all the little items that we own 😥😥☹️😖😫. To all those who have lost 🙏
The people they are showing you on the tv lived in million dollar homes. Have you seen any other areas besides coastal properties? And you won’t.😡
@@michelesworld3292 Sorry but you are wrong. There are videos all over here showing devastation everywhere. In every community. Why do you hate so much? You must have not even watched THIS video. The lady called Temple, lived in a mobile home park, and not a very nice one! IS THAT WHAT YOU CALL A MILLION DOLLAR HOME?!! Also the man they first interviewed lived on a small sailboat. WOULD YOU CALL THAT A MILLION DOLLAR HOME ALSO?!! You have won the "Most Ignorant Comment Of The Day", Michele!
You have got to be positively brain dead. Or are you just plain STUPID? Which is it!!!!????
Prayers for everyone affected by hurricane Ian . From Plant City Florida .

Feels like I am watching Katrina all over again ~
Odd that you say that because the day of the storm I told my family this could be Katrina 2.0. Living here for 12 years I know the area well enough (and the history of storm surges), and seeing the angle Ian started to take, I knew we'd be in trouble being on the 'dirty side' of the huge storm. It was too big and powerful to not be real bad. But still never saw _this_ coming. Helicopters (US Army, Coast Guard, many others) flying back and forth all day and some carrying large storage containers like you see on barges, it is disturbing to know what's going on out there.
One would think during a disaster, it would bring out the best in people. By these comments it tell me people don’t give a crap and are judgmental
Judge mental? The fact that they did not evacuate proves that they were fools. Dead fools, the best kind.
And the judgemental heartless ones will be the first to cry for help when disaster hits them!

Been coming here for years. It’s so sad to see the building that I am familiar with completely gone. 🙏🙏🙏 for the people.
We came back from Harvey, you will come back from Ian.
what is really devastating is humans destroying beautiful wetlands
You know why I say take all that Debris and dump it in the Ocean 🌊.
If anyone on earth thinks that barrier islands were to be populated for the greedy pleasure of human blight, I send you Ian.
I will never forget this and it will take…. A long time for me to recover just emotionally. I know I’m not the only one. This was ….. so devastating. We all thought it’d hit Tampa. NOONE could’ve known.
You are so right.
This all reminds me of 2019 Dorian, I was completely homeless
isn't Dorian the one that stayed over islands like this did over Florida for couple hours ? I do believe hurricanes and the Texas freeze and other things
I believe weather manipulation is being used in past few years against people.
So, so sad-looks like Indonesia after the tsunami. Unbelievable.
This is tough for people...lessons to learn here.
So I came back from Jamaica 🇯🇲 after Hurricane 🌀 Opal to my bottom floor condo in Ft. Walton Beach Florida so many stories about that time. But by now they are smelling a horrible smell. Dead animals and old food with sewage what I remember when I see that debris is the SMELL!
@@shaycarson6459 I cant imagine...hope you are doing better now.😉
That's the gamble...
You reap what you sow!
Look for the helpers
They had time. Even if they told you to leave that morning you had time to leave. I evacuated that Tuesday because I wanted to leave way before it became mandatory. They gave warning to evac but made it optional on Tues. So people stayed because they wanted to.
Mother Nature 🌀💨❄️🌨️🌊🌪️ does she want to do not what you want her to do. Like people up north waiting until December 25 to buy a winter 🧣🧤🥾🧥
Some wanted to stay.
Some had no choice but to stay.
Ignorant phucks stayed to drown.
Yep . Well stated. Fall.on your swords Florida paradise seekers.
When you live in Florida, you get so many "false flag" HUGE hurricanes ...it becomes difficult to discern when real trouble is hitting. And many of these people had survived multiple hurricanes, but this one was the biggee we always talk about. THEN... for days, and hours upon hours, the news media and EXPERTS could only talk about TAMPA. They were late to the ball game when they finally called Ft. Myers/Port Charlotte as landfall ground zero, and TAMPA was fine. That spelled real trouble for many people and a HUGE hurricane hit them quite quickly directly in the face. I used to live in Ft Myers Beach and Sanibel - I am so sorry for my old neighbors' and fellow residents' loss. This one was so bad that it will be many years before normal comes back to this area.
Nothing fails like prayer! Best of luck!
I wonder if Joseph would say the same thing.
Prayer has never stopped a war or a hurricane.
@@freddyflintstoned913 How do you know? Many wars have been planned and never happened. How many hurricanes have formed and never landed? Pretty ignorant thing to say.
@@raquelwelch8996 Do you have any proof that prayer stopped a hurricane or a war from happening.

Thousands will flee and never return
What a surprise, Who could. imagine this happening. Live by the beach cause it is so cool. crying like babies.
I'll take my New England Blizzards any day instead these things that hit Florida all the time. I love my New England lifestyle. Winters we have sports to keep warm and busy. And it's quiet as all the snow birds head south.
Omg
In America own people suffering like this and Americans people supporting war…😢
🙏
Heartbreaking to here locals declare they had no idea the storm was going to be that bad - when they had constant warnings from all media sources that it was going to be precisely that bad. Many dead Floridians would testify that folks should pay attention, if only they could speak from the grave. In a way, they do speak from the grave to respect the warnings, and still many will never pay that respect and once again pay a horrible price. Sad to see.
One day at a time...you cannot figure it out right now....been there done that...Katrina
Platitudes are helpful at this point. Thanks Melanie. This too shall pass….
Not the same at all. Katrina was caused by over topping and washing out levee's. Nobody in Ft Meyers got flooded by a failed levee.
I don't get riding out 'the storm' on a boat.
It’s supposed to be sage to be in a boat
Who would expect to live there without paying more taxes? They always need to be rescued.
WHY DIDN’T THEY EVACUATE????????
Because most are dumb and entitled and didn’t take it seriously. Smh!
Some don’t have anywhere to go or can’t afford to
fools
There were tornados the night before the hurricane. Not ideal conditions to drive in.
And you can't get out of Florida in anything less than 6-8 hours. In bad weather, double the commute time.
Being in Venice, FL at only 1 hour and 15 minutes drive away, it's hard to understand the indiscriminate nature of these storms. Venice had it's damage but not like Fort Myers. Have been recovering from the damage here and helping neighbors too. So many in FL have no power, running water, and in some areas - no home to go back to.
Poor People. Those than are barely survinving after C19 Hit with this devastation
Why do they insist on showing the trailers that are not even on the beach?? San Carlos Island is NOT Fort Myers Beach /Estero Island.
Man must humble himself and realise he is not in control. The planet is trying to purge itself of the human race and all his evil and hatred . There is worst to come.
Unfortunately yes, way worse is there to come.
So true my friend.
You're one of those people, It's literally just an extremely powerful hurricane that happens pretty often in the tropics. Nothing has ever changed. Beaches will always be devastated by powerful storms. Please stop being so dumb. ☠😂
Such a stupid rude and dumb thing of you to say
Don't they know a hurricane is forming two or three days in advance? If I had a yacht like that I think I'd try to drive it down around the tip of Florida and up the East Coast to save my yacht. Maybe I'm naive. Is that unfeasible?
Yes. you are naive.

Reminds me of hurricane Katrina!

I live in St Pete/Tampa. We were in the center of the cone almost until the end, just like Charley in 04. Now that the Ft Meyers Sanibel island area is wiped out we are going to have more tourists this winter than ever. Bring your money and your manners.
So true.
LOVE Tampa! Madeira Beach, Indian Shores beach...glad you were not hit directly.
Me too. I'm across the bay in Riverview. Charley '04, Irma '17, Ian '22. All powerful storms and all were supposed to hit Tampa directly. None did.
Agreed that tourism will most likely rise around here, but hoping that somehow some of those dollars spent will make their way down to our neighbors to the south.
Truly devastating.
the season is not over yet
So sad ! And they say global warming isn’t real 🤔 my heart goes out to all of Florida

Is anyone from the state-run media going to question VP Harri's racists statement on the dispersing of hurricane relief money equitably... all Floridians are suffering, but crickets from the likes of ABC. Sickening!!!!
Shouldn't it be.
She needs to be held accountable for her racist statement. Let's see how the media walks that horrible statement back for her. When she was DA in SF, she was noted to be the first DA to incarcerate large groups of blacks ..
Her great grandfather on Jamaica, owned 200 black slaves. When he was forced to free them , he took white slaves. She hates us both. She's a fascist Communist.
Who is ABC
Nothing new. What about Andrew? You can have the hurricanes, tornadoes, (yes Florida gets those as well) cockroaches you can play polo on, fire ants, bugs in general. I'll take snow any day. It's pretty and rarely causes damage.
Helpful hint: Read the story of The Three Little Pigs. You're welcome.
Fort Myers got it worst. It was awful. The eye got right in to Fort Myers.
beware of "them"
If wind blows to an area means that there is a low atmospheric pressure in that area and there is a demand of air to normalize the atmospheric pressure there. If we can send some compressed air to that place immediately in fighter plane so that the atmospheric pressure is slightly increased then wind will not blow that fast as otherwise. Try this next time when there is a warning of hurricane.
Dude - the eye of the storm can be 50 miles wide - what kind of fighter plane can hold a tank of compressed air LARGE enough to do what you say. Even a fleet of cargo planes would have negligible effect.
Besides it is the sun and water that creates the turbulant airflow, So I hardly think you solution would do anything.
@@mike60521x Nothing wrong with experimenting.
@@santhoshkumar-vd7jo I am an engineer by trade - the first part of experimentation is knowing the parameters.
YOU can experiment all by yourself - using a small scale representation. Try creating a tornado as many have done on youtube. Then introduce the compressed air - you can prove/disprove your theory all by yourself and put on youtube and save the planet.
Knock yourself out - PROVE ME WRONG - The greatest science discoveries have been done by individuals.
I await your results, but I think you'll find the scale of the hurricanes is much too large to be affected by compressed air.

I am asking this question again. Does any know why Boat owners don't move the Boat out of the way of a Hurricane knowing 5 to 10 days in advance location of the inevitable storm .
No idea. Perhaps it isn’t possible with a sail boat. Boat/yacht with motor- might have a better chance to get somewhere safe, but, then again, maybe 5 to 10 days isn’t enough time. Maybe someone will answer.
Were is FEMA?

The prayers are a nice sentiment but they won't do anything. We have to get smarter in this country about handling this issue. It's only going to happen more and more.
ABSOLUTELY
try providing some actual solutions then........this area hasnt had a major hit in moder times- currently the solution is to get hit by a major storm and use current building codes that we have had since Andrew to build new homes or concrete condos near water to withstand cat5 winds.....otherwise you have to tell people to leave their homes- smarten up
Coastal dwellers, only going to get worse, leave that hell hole

Why humans are still not Chang for the better?
It's what happens when over development is all that matters. There's a reason why the old timers never built up the water way's
Hate to tell you but it was the old timers that allowed the building of the high rises. It was the old timers that never upgraded the hurricane windows, straps for their roofs, etc. It was the old timers that ignored the mandatory evacuations. They cannot say they didn't have a ride or a place to go and yes, pets were allowed. They were offered rides, shelters, food and safety and yet they decided to stay. 4 of their homes behind me crashed into my home. They crashed into my backyard, pool and garage. Overdevelopment has nothing to do with this hurricane. Not listening to mandatory evacuations is the mistake that was made. Had everyone listened, no one would have died.
Wonder what. Thay would do. Theirs a part of Florida were their poor no jobs not enough resources I seen this on viceland. We forget those suffering every day medium income is over 100 thousand year or more. Thay are insured.

Has anybody figured out why if you days to get out of the way you didn't get your multi-million dollar yachts out of the way. Do it yourself or hire someone ... what ever but explain why they are just setting in the way of the storm ? If I was the insurance company I'd be asking the same question!!
I feel sorry for all the DEAD ANIMALS OR SO CALLED PETS.
4 months before Ian hit, condo owners in Fort Myers Beach unleashed a pack of separate lawsuits trying to stop the 'Low-light Turtle Law' which for some years has required all lights on the beach to be fitted with yellow/amber lenses for the benefit of baby sea turtles emerging from their nests. When sea turtles are born, they instinctively run toward the light. Historically, the land was dark and the ocean was light from the reflections of the moon and stars. With the condos and hotels bars and businesses all lighting up the beach, baby turtles have been running to the highway. The yellow and amber lenses helped the turtles. So do not feel sorry for these nasty selfish inconsiderate people of Fort Myers Beach. Thank Ian instead that the turtles may yet live.
There will be weeping and knashing of teeth!
Taking advantage during a situation like this, is pure evil!
More like wind howling and water splashing.
Didn't people in Florida believe that a hurricane could do do this kind of damage to land surrounded by 3 sides of water or was it that old adage "this can' t happen to me?
