Overdrive sounds better after the fuzz pedal. You gotta look it like you’re putting the fuzz into an amp on full blast. So if you’re in a studio or at home or small club, you probably can’t crank your amp so you use the overdrive pedal to mimic the cranked amp and run the fuzz into it.
Interesting. I've seen other you tubers like Brian Wampler make the opposite case. In his demo, OD before fuzz tightened up the fuzz and made it sound more like a distortion pedal, and after the fuzz mellowed the spiky ntones of the fuzz and made it sound smoother but not less fuzz-like. That's my experience as well -raucous fuzz into a low gain OD makes the fuzz more warm sounding but still compressed and chewy. That's how I run it.
My experience as well…I think Big Muffs thought people tend to stick all over. But a typical Fuzz I find if the OD is before it with both on…you get a workable distorted long sustain drive. Fuzz first find it just makes the fuzz chaotic, and very mid focused. It’s not as smooth to me. Either way if I play the Fuzz by itself with no other pedal on…might as well put it first. If you have a clean OD pedal with a flat EQ like a Morning Glory Blues Breaker it’s not as harsh with the Fuzz first. It’s just those Tubescreamer Overdrives boost the Fuzz into area I don’t like…if I had to run it this way…I’d have an OD with eq options. Or run Fuzz, OD, EQ after to get it correct and clean up the mids. To me it works better with overdrive first and Fuzz after for use of Fuzz alone or combo the both for a distorted alt rock sound. Otherwise Fuzz first into an OD can compress so much for me it starts to go in and out on certain notes. It just depends on the buffer situation, and how your guitar reacts to it. Most say Fuzz first because older fuzzes want a High Impedance. But it gets tricky as reissues and new ones are built different.
For me, having an Overdrive with active EQ after a Fuzz works really well, not only does it boost the fuzz if necessary but it also applies the EQ and tightens or loosens accordingly.
Works especially well with a Muff. I use an RC and/orAC Booster and an MXR FET Driver before and after Muffs. Currently waiting on a high quality Coloursound Power Booster clone with added Bass and Treble controls (unlike the single tone control of the original) which is an excellent, open/transparent boost for stacking with Muffs and even Fuzzfaces.
I put all effects in chronological order. Fuzz pedals were invented first so they will go first. For some reason this kind of chronological thinking works for most cases. With exceptions of course.
Thanks for the simple and direct to the point style of video! I prefer to put my fuzz pedals before my overdrives. It takes a lot more knob tweaking, but gives me the sound that I want. I have 2 fuzz pedals and 2 overdrive pedals. It goes, Super High Gain fuzz first into another fuzz that's pulled back and starved sounding. Then into a transparent overdrive with Volume and Drive knobs set to noon and treble set to boost slightly, into an overdrive with more EQ knobs to color the sound. That last pedal pulls the gain down slightly while boosting the level. So it's a double fuzz set to crank then starve into a double boosted drive with EQ to clean up on the back end. It's a wall of awesome! Here's my signal chain: Solid Gold Fx Sasori (all knobs at 12 o'clock) EHX Green Russian Big Muff (Vol and Sustain knobs at 11 o'clock, Tone knob at 1 o'clock) EHX Soul Food (Vol and Gain mostly at 12 o'clock, Treble at 1 o'clock) Boss FBM-1 '59 Bassman Pre-amp Pedal (Gain knob at 11 o'clock, level knob at 1 o'clock)
Depends what type of fuzz. Big muffs it doesn't really matter. But a germanium fuzz face likes to interact with your guitar so it likes to be first. Shouldn't matter so much with silicon fuzz.
Best of both world's here. 😁 >Spark Boost > Fuzz > Overdrives Another Spark Boost after the EQ in my FX loop for clean boosting. And a EQD Tone Job 18V EQ Booster after that for sweeping out the mids = solohohohoho!!!!
It also depends a lot about what fuzz and what OD. The less transistors a fuzz has, the more it needs a direct interaction with pickups, and also the more it is unstable. Putting the OD between fuzz and guitar messes a lot with this interaction, especially if OD has a buffer. I would be very curious about the source of the statistic showing most people put an OD before a fuzz. Most beginners I wouldn't be surprised, electronic logic can be counter intuitive and it can feel intuitive to put the less amount of gain first, but most guitarists ? I would also be curious about the amount of professional guitarists doing it.
Bigg Muff pedals are usually 4 transistor pedals and putt in the end of the pedal chain due to complexity. Pedals like the FuzzFace or most diy pedals are 2 trans and go first in the chain.
Overdrive into Fuzz always. You keep the Fuzz tone since it’s last in chain, while the lighter overdrive signal tends to add more mids, more gain and more sustain if dialed in right, usually with light overdrive
I tend to feel the muff pi is better served in front of the OD. I basically have the muff pi going into a preamp pedal that has 4 modes, OD, Distortion, Metal & Djent Metal (VHT Redline V-Four). I can go Muff = > clean amp or I can Muff => slightly overdriven preamp => clean amp. The amp itself also has an overdrive so I can go with the Muff => bypass preamp pedal => slightly overdriven amp.
Yeh it really depends on the drive or fuzz pedal used. TS808 would just give 'bit more fuzz' before, but after youd have the fuzz with a ts style EQ. Every try a low gain rat with a fuzz face though? The thing with that is it works the opposite of expected. Rat Before brightens up the FF, but after, you. get a muddy fuzzy rat. I just always try both ways i have two of each and somehow each way possible on board.
Can’t really argue with the video BUT when i put my od808 after my big muff, it definitely sounds beefier (this is in person) but not in a good way, when I put od808 before my fuzz I get the same sound as u got with ur overdrive after🤔idk man I suppose only trial & error will tell.
In the video he uses a BD-2, a transparent overdrive pedal very similar to a fuzz in many ways. OD808s are not transparent - in fact, they add a lot of mids and soft-clip the guitar's signal, which is the exact opposite of what a Big Muff does - scoop the mids and clip everything. Meaning his overdrive stacks well after fuzz and yours does not.
Hi ! nice video ! thanks for that and clear explications ;). I'm waiting Blues driver Waza to be delivered, and was wondering about the placement in chain. I think with your video that the way is to go to after the fuzz. it's more beefy, and clear in the sound. For the moment, i've got a big muff pi sovtek deluxe, dod carcosa, and bat pharaoh. My dirt signal is Les Paul (neck position of PG blues bareknuckles)>clean boost>pharaoh>carcosa>eq>eqd plumes>Anasounds Savage mkii (great french klon clone)>Laney GH100TI in low input (stoner/doom setup). I'm used to have the klon with gain at 0, always on for embellishing my clean sound. Next, i use my carcosa, boosted with my pharaoh in no no diode position. and i engage the plumes for solos. But when i'm using fuzz, i'm lost in the mix, and i loose dynamics comparatively with my clean sound. What do you recommend , considering the Blues driver ? (any simplifiy trick is welcome). Could you advice me ? Thanks. Best regards.
I find with an 808ts type OD, the Fuzz before isn’t that great and is very colored and compressed sounding. It just isn’t a sound I like. Take the same 808 ts and put it before the fuzz and you get a usable distortion sound with high sustain. It really depends on the Overdrive! If you take a Morning Glory Blues breaker style with a flat EQ…I think you be ok with the Fuzz first. Just OD with extreme mid range is difficult I find if driving a Fuzz into it! Even taking a distortion pedal at lower gain sounds better as it’s not as colored to me. Either way running before or after, you can still use the Fuzz by itself. The whole Fuzz first is because some need a high impedance. But not all Fuzzes are created equally. So it’s worth looking at your pedals before buying a fuzz pedal. I know many that have 2 fuzzes…An old school first they don’t stack, and a Big Muff after the OD. Or some just use an EQ. It’s def one of the weirder discussions on stacking, and most will always say Fuzz first to be safe. But if it doesn’t sound good stacked, well it doesn’t sound good. So either play the fuzz with nothing else on, get another fuzz that works after OD, or don’t use a Tubescreamer!
I have heard that running buffered pedals, like the boss, affects the tone more so than a true bypass pedal when followed by a fuzz. Do you know if this is true? Thanks
Also, and in contrast, true bypass only will cause you to lose signal eventually and, the more bypassed pedals you run, the more your signal will decay (and therefore, your tone). The thing is, none affect your tone and if you actually want your signal to stay strong and tone to be pure, you will need at least one buffered pedal in your chain. Just try it and you will be able to notice it, even more, if you run several pedals together ( 4 or more), because that means more patch cable to use. What in telling you is just my opinion after trying both ways and after looking into it and listening to quite a few pedal manufacturers themselves. Hope i could help!
Hi Sean, do you have an extended version of the recording you did from 33 seconds - 45 seconds. Would love to listen to more of that groove, thanks Blu in Austin 🌻
Definitely not a subtle difference. Like alot of ppl ,I probably spend too much time trying to find which subtle difference sounds better.. Hi bro! Where should I put my 2 fuzz pedals within this chain: Guitar - Tunner - Wah - Compressor Boss (buffer inside) - Overdrives - Distortion? I thought before wah or compressor but not sure. Thanks
Succinct and punchy video, great work. I recently got a Green Russian EHX Big Muff and I started out treating it like a regular distortion pedal by placing it after band trio and compressor, leading me to almost take it off my board because it wouldn't play well with the other pedals. Then I placed the fuzz at the very front right after the guitar, before the band creator's buffered circuit. Huge improvement.
A Muff can go anywhere in the chain. I suspect that the problem was that Compressor. Muff into Comp is generally a bad idea. Comp into Muff is awesome! Davey G does it :)
This is how you stack pedals EHX any big muff then the BD-2 blues driver or SD-1 overdrive pedal after because the boss pedal has a buffer with in the Circuit and the big muff don’t so like this “ guitar-,then big muff, then BD-2 blues driver then chorus and then any delay and then amp and there you go time to rock🤔🤔🧐🧐🤨🤓🤙🤙🤙🤙👍👍
Ur right that there’s no right answer, but saying that most people put fuzz after OD is just wrong. Shaping a fuzz with an od like a Ts or a Klon or even a BD is ubiquitous
Great stuff. Very subjective. I have learned to Dial-back the Gain considerably, when Stacking drive pedals. You get: #1 Better string clarity and note definition. #2 lowers the Noise-floor. My 3 drives go: Barber Gain Changer SR to Fulltone OCD to Thorpy Muff ( all set at low-drive ). I can use just 1, any 2 in-combination or stack all 3. Sounds Killer. Enjoyed this.
When using a tube amp put your overdrive first them your fuzz going to the amp. With my solid state it didn’t make much difference ( but then again overdrive isn’t made for solid state amps ) Just my preference though ...
For some reason any sort of gain/level. After my big muff makes it sounds like squishy diarrhea. Which really sucks because my drive pedal is what I want to be the fundamental OD’d amp tone. Nobody puts a Muff in an effects loop! 🤮🤮🤮🤮
1:58 driver into fuzz

It's more versatile that way.
Most rock and blues need fuzz 1st overdrive 2nd for tone.
To me it seems like fuzz after overdrive because the algorithm and sound complexity of fuzz is bigger than overdrive
Yeah, fuzz just wants to be one of the first in your chain. Never put a fuzz after a buffer. Every time I’ve done it it kills the fuzzes character.
@@owenhodge4013 You can put a Muff anywhere in the chain.. because nothing can subdue a Muff!

When I pair my Russian big muff with my Tubescreamer, the Tubescreamer drops all of the low frequencies
That’s what tube screamers do naturally. It tightens things up. You can use an EQ pedal or something to get as much lows as you’d like back
It all has to do with the transistor. A germanium transistor wants an unbuffered signal, so before any boss pedals or anything else with a buffer.
After is better
