  • A common question I get quite often is "How should I set my pedal controls" in order to achieve a desired sound. Sometimes I also get messages or emails where a viewer has watched a youtube video, tried the same settings on their rig and had less than optimal results. In this video I'll dig into why this is, the simple solutions to fix it, and why suggested settings in a manual aren't actually all that helpful.

It's almost like Brian is suggesting we use our ears and move the tone knob(s) to get the sounds we want instead of inundating the Wampler support folks with emails. It's a bold strategy, Cotton. ;)

Set the amp clean right before it starts to break up and roll the tone in from dark to high with gain at 9 o clock. I think, that‘s a very good start for a great dirt sound 🤟😎 Great Video again!

This is VERY important. Many older pedals were specific to amp types: a DS1 or Dist+ were designed to run into Marshalls. TS9 into a Fender (which is why Mesa guys love them, similar tone stacks).
Not to mention add this to say what a given designer thinks a "Marshall In A Box" should sound like. I have various clones of the Riot, Sansamp GT2, a Line 6 Butler Tube Driver on my M13, GT500, had a Pinnacle Deluxe, and just rebought a Joyo British Sound (Tech 21 British) to get me back where I want to be.
The Riot & GT500 sounded E P I C through a Brown Eye clean channel or various clean tube Marshalls. Through my Quilter TB201 I couldn't get that back, despite the Lead Channel being extremely similar to a clean JCM800.
Woods > Strings > Pickups > Effects > Preamp > Power Amp > Speaker > Mic. No matter what you choose, these are all stacked, and have to do so well. At least to your ears.

Hi, just stumbled across your video. About a hundred years ago 😉 (because I'm old, and make involuntary noises getting up from chairs these days) I worked in a guitar shop in London and a local sound engineer dropped in for a chat.
I was having a bit of a noodle on one of the shop guitars through a Boss MT-2 *takes cover* and this sound engineer says try putting it in the effects loop and stick a rack EQ in there aswell.
It blew. My. Mind. The sound was an entirely different beast, since then I've always tried distortion or overdrive pedals in the loop and sometimes it really works, sometimes its a bit m'eh.
If you have an amp with an effects loop, throw the pedal in there, then maybe get an EQ pedal and a compressor to put in front of the amp if you're running a combo.

The ds-2 metal zone the one that everyone hates. is my favorite it has an EQ built into it high, low, and mids. It used to be the standard to scoop everything on guitar amps. Sounds great when youre by yourself. But no matter how much you turn your volume knobs up, you wont hear it. when playing with other people, as a guitarist, you need higher mids because guitar is a mid-range instrument.

Amazing video. I have been using ONLY the normal channel in my DRRI exactly cause the vibrato shannel is bright. All the drives I try in it, sound like a thin "fly" sound. After watching this, I am gonna try some new EQ settings in the pedals. However, as far as you are concerned, can fuzz pedals be used in the vibrato channel of a DRRI without sounding too thin?

Was that the opening riff to Dokkens the Hunter? Also, do most two channel amps have no “preamp” on the clean channel? My Blackstar artist 15 claims this, so should I be using some king of preamp , maybe to boost volume and color it at least? It only has a volume and tone for clean channel. Great video as usual- super informative, Brian

I used to run my 3 drives on: med to high gain. I sounded fizzy, with zero-note-definition and extremely unprofessional. Now I've turned all 3-Drives "way down" and will occasionally Stack-em. I finally have several gorgeous Gain stages now. You-live & You-learn. Stay Safe.

GOOD tips Bri! Pedals will always react differently in different amps! Still you seemed to have too much low end flub to that sound! Might want to dial back some more low freqs on that amp! Most Fenders are very bassy sounding!

I realize this posting is 3 years old...but also, for the last 3 years, I've been trying to dial in the Dracarys to a usable tone. I bypass my preamp and go straight into the return because I don't care for the preamp...I can get a decent tone...until the rest of the band joins in. The mid control on that pedal is just weird. Unfortunately, I keep going back to my Metal Zone. Also, not everyone is using tube amps these days...and guitar stores (at least in my area) are few and far between, and don't have the more boutique stuff to try out, so I get stuck listening to demos on super high-end and colored videos that just don't provide a realistic display. I really want to love this Dracarys!
