This was my first hearing of Cochereau at Notre Dame - the improvisations were soon to follow. That massive unison opening just grabbed my attention and never let go. Pure musical magic!

Le grand Pierre Cochereau aux 5 claviers du Cavaillé Coll en cours de transformations qui aboutiront en quelques années à l'orgue unique au monde, celui qui permit à Cochereau d'improviser des musiques inouïes. Ici, c'est le grand style symphonique de Louis Vierne dans la plus belle des 6 symphonies qu'il a consacrées à l'orgue. Merci de faire revivre ce 33t paru chez Philips en 1963.
3e symphonie enregistrée chez L'Oiseau-Lyre, très probablement avant la restauration de l'orgue dans les années 60, avant les ajouts de Boisseau; cette version est donc antérieure à celle enregistrée chez Fy/Solstice en 1975 ou 1976 (je ne sais plus exactement). Je désespérais de ne plus la trouver; aussi, cette publication est vraiment la bienvenue!

The symphony needs to be performed as a whole to make sense. There seems to be a nasty trend of just performing individual movements in concerts which is unacceptable.
When talking orchestral music I would tend to agree. But the French Organ School I think would have been pragmatic all along - after all in a Church Service you are not going to play a whole symphony. Some movements too, such as the Finale of Symphony No. 1 really do work well out of context.
