I remember sitting behind him at the console while he played some of these treasures. Little did I know these were practice sessions for the recording which he made himeself. I remember he had a beautiful Crown reel 0 rrel recosrder sitting nearby. He was onlt about 7 years older than me and we got along great. He and his wife, Sally, came to my parents house to pick up some orfan parts for his home organ in Chestnut Hill. What great times.

Well I never... Can't wait to hear this!

He was simply tge Best and a great supportive teacher. A real Christian treated appalingly by the church at the end, as we continue to see elsewhere today.

I play the toccata it's no worse than any Vierne or Dupre ,in fact musically ,more interesting .I think Scherzo is insipid....all that flute junk

Thanks again for a great addition to your site. Stockmeier's playing is masterful as usual. What I liked the most was the Three Tone Pieces by Gade. I had never heard them before and they deserve more regular performance. The Krohne P and x2F are interesting though the main theme of the Passacaglia is on the verge of being too long and there does not seem to be, initially at any rate, too much distinction between the Ps theme and the first theme of the fuge, but that's just probably me. The Karg-Elert pieces are given a fresh interpretation and much appreciated. It is interesting to contrast the theme of the Passacaglia in the Kronhe and the K-E. Thanks again

I have this LP, as well as Hans Gerd Klais' book about this organ and its restoration. A truly unique organ, built by the parish's polymath priest, also the church's architect! Note that the recording was made while the organ was set up in the Klais factory in Bonn, immediately after its restoration. Oehms later recorded a second LP on this organ in its church in Las Piñas.

This recording is a very important historical document. It gives much valuable insight into the performance practice of players of Doctor Stathams generation. A subject on which there is growing a awareness of and interest in from todays younger players. It also shows how the Norwich organ sounded before being subjected to "improvements" typical of the time, now discredited, in 1970. Please forgive the lack of apostrophies. For some reason my laptop wont do them.

Again, so interesting to see the Saint Étienne du Mont organ referred to as a Beuchet-Debierre instrument. They were clearly keen to show off the then-trendy neoclassical credentials. These days you'll more often find it referred to as a Cavaillé-Coll instrument.

Great that the Toccata is missing. It’s such a poor piece of music and he was clearly having an off day when he wrote it. The other movements in the Suite Op. 5 are sublime.

A real classic - especially the Prelude, Adagio and Variations which has Gregorian chant alternating with each verse. Indispensable!

Thank you so much for uploading these precious and unique recordings. I have been actively looking for these for well over 30 years. So wonderful to hear Pierre Cochereau and Kurt Redel and the Pro Arte together. I am unaware of any other recording which plays the Vivaldi violin concerto violin solo parts on an organ. Normally it's all Vivaldi violin conerto, or the Bach transcription, all on the organ. The combination of instruments on this recording is very special and magical, not least because even now, the pipes of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll's masterpiece are still silent, and Philips really should find the original masters and re-release them. These recordings are true masterpieces.

I guess the record producers thought a picture of a Baroque church would be appropriate for a performance of Bach works; the church in the picture certainly bears no resemblance to St. Etienne-du-Mont.

Wonderful! Great organ (pun intended), great music and performer. BTW, after Michael Smythe's untimely death, I read that there were many hours of recordings unpublished. Do you know if this is true and if these recordings still exist?

i admit that i didn't think too much about this transcription when i read about it years ago, but hearing this has completely changed my mind - exceptional playing and creativity in adapting this piece. we lost hampton way too soon

Das war in meinem ersten Lehrjahr bei Breil die erste Schallplatte die ich mir gekauft habe und ich liebe sie heute noch. Kralik kennt niemand. Habe die größten Organisten gefragt und außer Zathmary kannte ihn niemand. Selbst Planyavsky der viel unbekanntes kennt war überrascht. Bin dabei das zu ändern denn ich finde das Stück unglaublich gut.....hier auch klasse gespielt. Und den wunderbaren Krebs bekommt man nie zu hören, auch hier eine Interpretation der Extraklasse auf einer leider sehr verstimmten Orgel. Leider habe ich Käte van Tricht nie in einem Konzert gehört was ich immer noch sehr bedauere. Schön dass es jetzt diese Aufnahme bei RUclips gibt und ich hoffe dass viele Orgelfreunde das finden.
