yeah hope all well great to see you still kicking out at the world. you are the reason why I picked up the bass again, beautiful bass playing as usual ty
I think this bassline is Duran Duran's most underrated and have since I first heard it back in the 80s. I love that fretless sound. Does anyone know what bass John used for this song? ETA: Looked it up, looks like it might have been an Aria Pro II SB-600 fretless single pickup configuration.
"And soldiers coming home like shadows turning red" One of my fav. DD songs. Can't help but think your Jaco work helped with the singing tones here. Very nice!
zumazmusic Surviving & chilling at the same time. Music-wise I recently learned the gtr solo to Squeeze's Black Coffee In Bed. It's got a nice chromatic bit. Glad you're posting again. :-)
Anytime! I think my latest was a little over a year ago, lol, but there are a few that i would really like to get up to par on and upload in the near future!
Unfortunately you are correct Alexandre. There are some timing issues there. I think it's a combo of not being completely comfortable on fretless and perhaps some audio to video sync issues as well. I'll try to have it all sorted out for the next one!
Thank you for posting one of my all time favorite Duran tunes. What are your thoughts on John Taylor claiming he used a phaser to create the fretless sound on this and Save a Prayer... I've never found a phaser that quite matches that tone or clearly removes the fret buzz completely.
zumazmusic ! I will have to rewatch that!!! Have you tried D'addario Chrome flatwounds? I put those on my SB1000 and haven't recorded with any other bass since!
@@zumazmusic hey dude, I was just coming back to amend my comment , sorry lol. that bass has a nice fatness though. I wish he had definitively said what he used and when. I seem to remember an old interview where he mentioned an SB700 or 900.
@@Danthehorse Yes, I wish he had too! I'm of the opinion that during the Rio era he was using a dual pickup bass, like the 900 you mention. With the fretless, though, I'm just not sure.
Great job this one is hard because the tempo varied on different versions of the song. If you listen carefully and know what speed the original cut was recorded at you'll realize John Taylor has a very slow burn away from the fretted notes while keeping up with Roger Taylors metronomed drum beat, pretty difficult unless you have the mood of the music down.
Hey you're not kidding! Not too mention trying to play fretless while they're messing around with the tape pitch and using healthy chorus throughout. ;)
Hello Zuma, I am your big fan here in Brazil. I love your explanation and your patience with us, must be hard to get time to answer so many questions. My little girl thinks you looks like Robert Downey Jr. Sorry she's playing ....Thank you and God bless!
Je te supporte à 100% Grâce à toi je sais jouer quelques morceaux de Duran Duran. Pourrais tu reprendre les derniers titres de John taylor ? Merci. You have my all support. Thanks to you I learned some great John Taylor's bass line. I will help you...
@@wellenscraig Are you watching me?! I was just discussing this with a buddy who is also planning out the purchase of one of the JT signature models. So the answer is no, but it's in the works!
Me too! There’s no stock in the UK of any but JT toured with an NG3 so may have to settle for one, however looks like he had a combustion scratch plate on it, one he taped over the scratch plate lines.
@@wellenscraig Unless you're talking about the initial, limited run, there is no stock anywhere. I say you remain patient for the JT production models!
Zuma,is that a ARIA Cardinal Bass? Also please, please, please do a bass lesson for KHANADA. Any self respecting Duran bass lover would concur,LOL....thanks
Hi 'Zuma, love your covers and I'd like to see you cover something like Howard Jones' Things Can Only Get Better and Animotion's Obsession. And your cat is quite well behaved. I don't think ours would let us do that...
I must of heard this song countless times, but never really "heard" the bass till now. It's like I heard the song for the first time! Thanks for this!
Are you still waiting for the 7:20pm Nightboat? If you board, you'll never leave! ;)
Thanks for coming back after many years, again stunning.

I was gonna with "a fretless Aria SB series bass" but seems you have figured out the most likely candidate. 😎👍
beautiful tone
Thank you mon frère. I've always been a bit insecure about this performance because I really don't play fretless. So I'm glad you like the tone!
zuma largest !!! perfect !!! keep it up !! You're much input, I love your work
Gracias Skarleth! Saludos de Los Angeles!
Awesome.
+berkustube - Thank You very much. :)
Esa melodía, ese movimiento y sonido sencillo en la línea del bajo, notable composición, Zuma como siempre un GENIO, UN GRAN MÚSICO.
Gracias Mariano!
Hola, tengo este mismo bajo desde 1984. Muy personal y agradable de tocar. Felicidades.
nicely done Zuma. flats are simply the best! ;)

Zuma, great work again, but I felt like few delay comparing your bass sound x track sound. Congrats from Brazil!

spawnmc - If you watch the Classic Albums Rio DVD you will hear John correct himself and state that the bass was double tracked(!), hence the chorus.

did he record this with that model bass? and using flats?
It was likely an Aria SB-1000 fretless with roundwounds.

Yes, it's a CSB-380. Not too shabby for under $200. Khanada? I was thinking more like Faster than Light or Make Me Smile first.
John was clearly greatly influenced by Japan's Mick Karn here.
I wholeheartedly agree 😎👍🎶

I believe the bass on Things Can Only Get Better was a Yamaha DX7's slap bass preset. All FM!
