Wow! Sounds fantastic! What a player!! I seriously think that Duran Duran and JT were the king of bass lines. When do you EVER hear stuff this good these days???? Todays kids need to hear stuff like this and use their imagination, bring some funk back into pop!! Excellent clip!
I had the pleasure of meeting Andy and John (on separate occasions) several years ago...very nice guys. I've seen DD live 6 times (but only once with all 5) and I saw PS once and JTT once. All great shows.
I've been such a huge fan of Duran, and more specifically John Taylor, since the early 80s. His bass playing is spellbinding to me. I'm not a bass player, but I've memorized every nuance, every note in his lines, until I could hun along and follow along with my fingers. I've never heard anyone else come close, but you are spot on! I'm completely floored! Gorgeous playing. You have gained a new fan!
Thank you so much for sharing. I've been a Duranie for more than 20 years. Watching you play with joy makes me love John Taylor more and more. Rock On, please.
The slap tone on the Kubicki is very unique and it would win the slap tone contest against the Bongo in my opinion. Of course I was drawn to the Kubicki because of John Taylor but it is a genuinely incredible bass. The tone, the construction, the unique ideas. Believe it or not, I sold my first Kubicki, a trans-blue beauty. The grey Kubicki in this video belonged to a dear friend of mine who passed away. I am very lucky to have it. Saludos!
You are an excellent bassist and you play JT's stuff flawlessly. It's really cool seeing how those great parts are played! It's great to see John's work shown homage. Thank You My Friend. Keep it up!
This track was first laid down at Bob lamb's flat on Cambridge rd Kings Heath/Moseley Birmingham on my road, remember using his flat to make a couple of tracks myself. He then moved over to highbury rd one road opposite kings Heath park. So many bands came out of that flat. I met so many people who went onto become mega stars. Amazing generation of young people who created such a great vibe and scene. Great memories.
zumazmusic last time saw Bob was in way back in 1987 when I came back from the states . He was with Steve gibbons bands for one night as he used to be drummer for some charity gig. I left Birmingham in 1996 and live in London let my dream of being in band there, Only in 2007 when I came across your videos did I start to pick up bass again I hope his still alive, not heard any news.
Daniel Stans - let's hope someone who influenced us both, behind the scenes, is still doing well. What bass(es) do you play? So glad you got back into it! 😎🎸
You Nailed it! JT's bass riffs from that era are deceptively "easy" yet so "effortlessly" layered that apparently many bass players have a hard time with. BTW I'm not a musician, just a fan with an appreciative ear for superlative musicianship.
Sei troppo forte!!!
Nice job on the John Taylor style. I bought one of these Philip Kubiki basses the first year he finished with fender and started making his own guitars. It is a beautiful, and at the time expensive instrument. Im amazed that it didnt carry too much into the later years as it was a very ahead of its time bass. I also liked the Alembic and Steinburg basses.
Dude you rock... plain and simple. :-) And thanks for answering my bass questions. P.S. I like the slow and detailed examples you're starting to do at the beginning of your lessons. Very useful when trying to see what you're doing in real-time.
Brilliant playing, man! But you don't need me to tell you how good you play! By the way, I love the fact that while this is focussing on John Taylor's bass playing, there is Andy Taylor's CD on your desk! It's like Andy is watching! LOL! I loved the original line up of John and Andy. What a team!!!
Very clear lesson up front man. I really enjoying teaching but it's a fairly tedious addition to recording/editing/posting the video, admirable of you to do so. There is real passion in your playing, I can really tell you love it. I'd be curious to hear any original music you may have if you're interested in sharing.
I LOVE that Andy Taylor CD you have on your desk! one of my favorites :) you are an amazingly talented bass player! this is my favorite DD song... JT would be impressed :)
I've heard just about everything Duran related my friend! Yes, there are cool licks in the Arena version and it's much faster. A great bass sound overall as well. It's kind of what got me hooked on playing bass to begin with.
@Factor1310 - The original Factors were 18 volts, a select few early Fender era ones were also 18v while most others were 9v. Post Fender era basses were back to 18v.
you are simply awesome...you should dive into the ARCADIA side of the Duran projects...The Flame s a simple but cool bass line...let me know what you think
@NelsonMuntzPhoto - I believe there was also a Warwick in with the Steinberger at the time, no? I suppose that after years of playing the same bass, you just need a change. Yes, that is a Japanese import of "Thunder" with some extra tracks. Life goes on, goes and and on...!
Wow!! Thanks, I've been working on it, and have, most, but some 'issues' with some 'parts'. The Harmonic 'makes sense'. That 'part' in the Interlude @ 4:03, has been the 'part', I've had the greatest Challenge, Nailing Down.
@MLG246 - LOL!! You too huh? I thought the same thing until I heard the musicianship behind the Rio album, and I'm also a bassist, and I developed a whole new respect for these guys especially John Taylor. Another phat bassline is "Last Chance On The Stairway"
@NelsonMuntzPhoto - Well spotted! That is a Japanese import version with some extra tracks. I hear there are some tracks you can buy from Amazon as a download as well. I love that album.
@neonjunglejumper - For New Religion I would go with the Jazz. The Warwick is awesome but they are generally heavier in the low-mids. Of course, sometimes it's pretty cool to hear a bass-line on a different bass than it was recorded with. Looking forward to your post. Make sure to match your video properly! Most audio for video will be at 48kHz but some of the newer pocket cameras are at 44.1. Just find out what your camera uses and match the sample rate in your ProTools session.
Zuma thanks again. Learning a lot. John Taylor's basslines are not that easy to play. Thanks to you I learn the difficult parts. It's a shame JT doesn't make those melodic chic-like basslines annymore... I can only hear JT bassline-style on the 3 first albums. never heard better bass lines since... Stil a
1/16th slats of wood pressed together in the neck eliminates dead spots and the pickups are cut at the top so the fingers clear them better for slap and pop.
I would love to get that bass if you only you could get that 24th fret. I know they do a bass with 24 frets, but it doesn't come with the D-Tuner. Would also like some kind of inlays....Tone is to die for man!! Would love to see ya playing some more Duran Duran with the Kubicki! ;-)
@Guyisthere - I don't know if there is a video. I think I saw him perform live with a white one sometime around the Wedding Album era (early 90's). It had the wings on the body, not a skinny stick one like early Steinberger basses.
Zuma....u rock dude...I love all ur vids! I was just curious as to if u have ever met JT or any of the other DD guys...and also how many times have u seen them live??
Sorry I took a while to respond, I have been going to driving school over here in Japan and their Japanese english is SO difficult to understand...I don't really want a 5 string bass so thats why I want the 4 string with the D tuner. I really like the Aria Pro II that you have as well and getting those wouldn't be a problem since I live in Japan these days. Only problem is that when summer comes humidity goes through the roof, so I have to careful about the next bass I buy because of this...
@neonjunglejumper - both basses sound great but for New Religion I would go with the sizzlier tone of the Jazz. Just turn both pickups and tone all the way up! Don't forget to set your audio bitrate to that of your video camera. Usually the rate for video is 48KHz. but check your camera to be sure.
where do i begin? i loved Duran Duran as a teen ager and forgot about them as an adult. These days, I'm a percussionist with an acoustic band. You are a fantastic bass player. Someday, I'd like to make music with some one as hot as you.
What's not to like about the Factor? Great tone, lightweight, ergonomic, killer low D. String changes are the only bummer. Once in a while it's tough to get them in quickly.
Thank you for all your kind comments here and in the other videos. The truth is I am a pretty goofy dancer! I am only at home in back of that bass. I have issues I guess. Don't we all?!?!?!
i love this and it's very helpful! What kind of guitar do you have and how do you get that particular sound you have with it? Mine doesn't sound like that
@jukedalon2 - It's a Kubicki Ex-Factor and that's the way they sound. I am playing it in passive mode. If you switch to active "flat" mode this thing will shake the walls with bass.
New Religion is one of my favourite Duran Duran's tracks and I've tried to pay attention to the bass line many times. I'm not a musician but your work sounds good !!
@neonjunglejumper - She may not answer you but that question has been asked to John. I don't seem to remember him mentioning a specific reason. It was just time to move on to something different. --- Notorius was definitely all Kubicki.
Really great teacher. Have you ever listened to the bass off of some Bow Wow Wow? That guy is also quite syncopated and takes the lead melody a lot... Anyway, good stuff. Do you perform in LA at all?
I absolutely love Leigh Gorman. Him and the rest of Bow Wow Wow are way up there for me. His style is inimitable. Wild in the Country is something I hope to be able to do one day. I perform in Los Angeles once in a big while. If I do I usually mention it on my Facebook page. Feel free to add me there - Zuma Arechiga

Does anyone know why Kubicki stopped making these incredible basses? Please let me know. Also, how hard is it to find one that is not completely worn out given that the last production year was 1992? Lastly, what does one of these in decent condition usually go for?

So glad I found a bass mentor that teaches all John Taylor!! I prob woulda been stuck without you.. thanks..
Right on AC! I'm glad to be of help. 😎🤘
No man! I haven't had the pleasure of a face to face encounter with any of the Duran members. Someday soon I hope!
Wow!
Sounds fantastic! What a player!!
I seriously think that Duran Duran and JT were the king of bass lines. When do you EVER hear stuff this good these days????
Todays kids need to hear stuff like this and use their imagination, bring some funk back into pop!!
Excellent clip!

donutcookiepie wow!
I keep coming back to this Duran tune.
Thank you for showing a bit of how the magic happens.
Michael Anderson - You're welcome and thank YOU for coming back!
Michael Anderson this track on the arena album is a beast
I've been such a huge fan of Duran, and more specifically John Taylor, since the early 80s. His bass playing is spellbinding to me. Thank you so much for sharing.
I've been a Duranie for more than 20 years.
Watching you play with joy makes me love John Taylor more and more.
Rock On, please.
You NAILED the harmonics! That was always my favorite part of the bassline...
Mate, I know how difficult it is to play the stuff. Youre a fantastic musician. You and JT make it look so easy. A pleasure watching you play.
The slap tone on the Kubicki is very unique and it would win the slap tone contest against the Bongo in my opinion. Of course I was drawn to the Kubicki because of John Taylor but it is a genuinely incredible bass. The tone, the construction, the unique ideas.

@ModROD67 - I love Andy' solo work and yes, anything John and Andy did together was awesome as well as the original lineup. It was pure magic.
I won't say you make it look easy, but I will say your hard work and talent shine through. Nice work!
you know, i watch your videos more than the originals - that's how good you are.
HOLY HELL DUDE! One of my favorite Duran songs just for the bass. AWESOME!
Great playing, I’ve always loved the bass line to this track and so cool watching you play it
Thank you! 😎🎸

The Bass Break that John played on the Live version, he modified it a lil bit.. Sounded really cool.
Dude you rock... plain and simple. :-) And thanks for answering my bass questions.
P.S. I like the slow and detailed examples you're starting to do at the beginning of your lessons. Very useful when trying to see what you're doing in real-time.
The tone on that bass is so sick. Your recording sounds exactly like the Arena version of the song.

You really are remarkable.

Yes, pre-fender. Off the top of my head, a 1987.
@grooveBASSgirl - Your comment makes me very very happy! I will have a new video soon, promise!
Ey, yo lo note tambien (en Live Earth). Era como un tren chocando pero regresaron control...

Well, did you pick up the BASS or what?! Thanks for stopping by either way. :+)
perfect
GREAT SOUND! What is the year of this factor? Is 9v ou 18v??? This have a middle key in eletronics back on body?
Adding the "lesson" IS tedious but I love spreading the word.
I would love for you to check out my original music on MySpace. My user id is "zumazmusic" I also play bass for the Holliston Stops (in my "Top Friends") Being a songwriter and playing great bass is what I love to do. Thank you for asking!
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it. For purchasing an SB I recommend eBay for used and "Ishibashi" for a brand new John Taylor re-issue import from Japan. Just google Ishibashi and send them an e-mail.
Does anyone know why Kubicki stopped making these incredible basses? Please let me know. Also, how hard is it to find one that is not completely worn out given that the last production year was 1992? Lastly, what does one of these in decent condition usually go for?
Mr. Kubicki is, sadly, no longer with us in the mortal sense. He passed away in early 2013. Look up "The Kubicki Factor" on Facebook. It's a great resource. My educated guess has you spending approximately $1500 for a decent Ex-Factor.
