Duran Duran - New Moon (clip) - bass cover and lesson

  • Today we get a little crazy and play 4 basses! I'm sure the full length version of this teaser, for Duran's re-work of New Moon on Monday, will be released by the time this video is live. C'est La Vie!
Though I'm playing many basses, I gave them all the same treatment with the following signal path and plug-in chain. I'm plugging directly into a UAD LA-2A compressor pedal, which feeds into an Art USBMix4 mixer/interface. The clips were recorded with the free Audacity software. Later, in Pro Tools, I imported the clips recorded in Audacity and used these plugins - UAD Massenburg MDWEQ5 (a very clean equalizer) to cut 160Hz by 2db, a Softube "DBX 160" compressor for some extra leveling and punch, then another UAD LA-2A "Tube" compressor to "smooth n boost", a smidge of the ubiquitous Waves RBass, then lastly a pinch of SoundToys Microshift for subtle widening.

@@zumazmusic When I was younger, I obviously like the early stuff but the older I get, I like a lot of the stuff from the "forgotten" albums like Big Thing and Liberty. Also, I like your other basses but the Aria hits differently when I hear Duran songs played with it.

@@forbiddendonut I agree with both points! I'm gonna give Liberty some love soon. I believe I have only done Serious so far. The Aria has some magic to the way it sits with that mid-focused, woodsy tone.

Indeed, this was VERY enjoyable. Thanks for this clip. And that new version of the song sounds really cool! All of those basses sound great, but for me, the Aria still reigns supreme. Bonjour Zuma,
Merci professeur pour cette nouvelle leçon.
    I really enjoy your lesson.
Definitely, the aria bass is the best one for this song. It's sound are so mystical for me, it's mesmerizing me since my 15 (I'm 58 now)...
For this reason, I'm so happy to ear any Duran Duran music and especially the JT's bass tone.
Thank you so much for your cover and lesson.

Hei Zuma! I hope that by the time you read this, Pepper is back to herself again :-) Really cool video, and a nice demonstration of how a musician's choice of instrument, tonality and contemporary mores alter with time. The mid-presence of the SB-1000 was just so 80s and very very Trevor Horn to my ears, even though I don't believe he had any relationship with JT/DD? JT's use of octaves and your "8th-note staleness-kicker" makes me think of how rhythm is constructed and its purpose in tracks like this. Groove always benefits from cues and anticipation to my mind. The octaves on their own with missing the low note is a real flavour in addition to the anticipation of what I call a "rolling hole" note. It's masterful, and absolutely, all feel tools. Any player that can master two simple tools of rhythm and placement have a massive palette of groove colouration to paint in! JT dropping in chromaticism on the weak and leading beats just make his palette so much wider. This could be a very very deep rabbit hole to chase on a technical level. As of writing, I am tackling a weird Bossa Nova line and hearing similar octave concepts in my head that I am sure my hands can't drive :-(
