Jeeroy Lenkins to dujd's point, he's had a couple big hits like thrift shop and can't hold us, but a concerning amount of people say that he is terrible.
I dont think he deserves the hate but he doesnt deserve the praise either.

TL;DR, underrated, overrated, who cares? The people who like King Green's comment are just agreeing or stating they like his music.
His popular stuff was good popular music but after a while that's not the songs of his that I'm listening to. Honestly up to at least This Unruly Mess I've Made you could generally sort his music into categories; fun/party, appreciative/melancholy, and sobering (and/or) self-reflective/grief songs. For example: "The Town" and "My Oh MY" are melancholy; "White Privilege", "Contradiction", "Fallin'", "Otherside", "Vipassana" (the list goes on) are sobering, self-reflective, and/or grieving. Other songs like "Dance Off", "White Walls", and yes, "Can't Hold Us" all fit into the fun/party category. Granted there is most likely an uneven amount of songs fitting into those categories I've made up to try and describe the different sides of his music, he's got diversity so it would be unfair to score every song the same way or an album altogether because a few songs of his might appeal to certain people well while others might not, but at the same time those other songs might appeal to a different group while the first group of songs might not. His pop songs like "Can't Hold Us", "Thrift Shop", and possibly "Same Love", and "Downtown" make rounds on the radio and are(were) generally liked, but the rest of his music might be unappealing to the general populace. The problem with pop songs is that those songs are used far too much to judge an artist. Someone who hasn't looked at any of his other music might say he's great, some might say he's trash. For me, I thought everything but "Can't Hold Us" (not saying I didn't enjoy it) were a nice change to the radio, as his songs made things like thrift shopping and riding a moped seem like fun, and rather than just another love song like all the other (he has literally made a song called "Love Song" although), "Same Love" was a song with a message, whether you like the message or not. That said, I appreciate some of his other songs much more. Honestly (and TL;DR) the whole overrated/underrated, he's bad/good thing is a lot of surface level skirmishing between people who generally don't bother to dive below the pop music. IMO you shouldn't judge an artist by what people say. The one good thing about pop songs is that they helped me discover an artist and music that I really like, and for me that's all that matters.
