Considering that both of you shot good double-action, self-defense speed, seven-yard groups with the Rock Island, I wouldn't call that gun ugly. Let's say that it's a solid gun with a nice personality.
The Rock Island .38 fills a niche frequently over looked by gun enthusiasts , being involved with firearms professionally and as a hobby for a number of years I have found that while many people ( male & female ) are interested in owning a firearm for home defense ( even here in N.Y.C. its possible , just forget about c.c.w. ) they are not interested in owning anything more then a reasonably priced ( read cheap) , reliable firearm , that operates with a minimum of complexity. They will then hopefully gain a sufficient proficiency ( I encourage as much practice as possible , unfortunately in urban environments that is not always possible ) and put the firearm in a night table draw ( sleeping better , because it is there ) and forget about it until it is needed (hopefully never ). The world is full of "one gun " people and for them a gun like the R.I.A. in your excellent video is enough. Peace , Be Free .
There are a lot of people exactly as you describe...I'm married to a revolver person (although she gets plenty of range time), who trusts revolvers 101%...reliable and simple never goes out of style...we bought my daughter a taurus 85, she has fired it, but seems content to keep loaded in a drawer...I am badgering her to go to the range at least 1-2 times a year, and she might relent...we need to lighten up on people who own one firearm, almost never practice, and sleep better knowing they have some protection - they are much more part of the solution than part of the problem...
@@meatballs2849 we can find .38 fmj for about 55-59 per 100...we don't shoot a lot of it, maybe a box or two a year...we'd like to find some more hollow point ammo, but we have enough in a pinch...we blow up a lot of .22lr these days as it is still affordable for us...
I got an email from Rural King today about firearms on sale. First one in the ad is Bearman Big Bore. I laughed reading the description that states “...internal hammer block to help prevent unintended discharge.” Maybe that could add a feature that helps INTENDED discharge.
Bearman Industries is the new owner of what was Cobra firearms. Cobra was more or less one of the many descendants of Raven Arms (e.g. Jiminez Arms, Lorcin, Davis Industries, etc.) Cobra's reputation for quality and quality control was bottom of the barrel. It doesn't look like Bearman is stepping up the game.
I was at the store the other day looking at the bearman derringer and the Ruger wrangler .22 and just the way they looked to be built I went with the Ruger. I’m so glad I did.
I just bought a RIA .38. I like it. I qualified with and carried a Colt Detective Special in the service (back in the last century). This clone brings back some good memories. Kudos to Rock Island.
i own a Rock Island m206. it's not ugly. it's a good shooter. it's a revolver. you don't want a shiny gun when you get the drop on a bad guy. you just want something that will bring down your target, the 206 is all that and way cheaper that a S&W, or a Colt. the single 6 is for plinking, snake hunting, and a pain in the but loading and unloading. Bond arms makes much better derringer, in multible calibers.
I got one there cool no problems and I paid 240 for mine. I'm gonna review my guns soon I have a camp channel called campdoggs if you wanna check it out.
I think it's really cool you and your son go shooting together. Reminds me of my late Dad who taught me how to shoot safely and effectively. The same things Dad taught me about safety I am teaching my sons.
It would make an even worse boat anchor. The 38 special is really all the handgun most would need for interior defense, man or woman. Open faced cylinder revolvers with flipout leave little question if loaded. The handgun easily fits in a minisafe box if children present. It offers no glint in a darkened room... Which is where you're likely hiding in a home intrusion. Great pull, no hare trigger, reasonable recoil, reliable. Good price. The derringer is no better than a $15 saturday night special of the 1970s hood. The cartridge mangling, the handling and clearing is literally a self inflicted gunshot waiting to happen.
As soon as I read the words "Derringer", I knew it was gonna be _the bad,_ lmao. The irony being that Derringer's are usually considered a lady's emergency self-protection firearm, but with that stiff trigger pull and being hard to remove the spent brass, I think any woman would be better off with the humble Wrangler. _At least you're getting six sure shots with that one!_ Great review as always, folks.
The only issue would be concealing a wrangler...we looked long and hard before deciding on a NAA...it is the size a derringer ought to be, and is reliable...the caliber isn't ideal, but at stick it in their ear range it will do the job...
but for the price i would not carry a colt detective it would be a collectors piece and the m206 is more of a complement to the detective and its a reliable carry option for people who appreciate revolvers
I recently found 300 round packs of .22LR for $17.99 on firearmsdepot. The Winchester yellow 100 year boxes they are doing. I cleaned out their entire stock to use with my Wrangler revolver and Marlin. I recently saw the same boxes at WalMart for $40.91. Yes. $40.91 for a 300 round box of .22LR. It's getting crazy. You can find a budget gun sure, but when a descent round count now far exceeds what you paid for the gun. Yikes. I paid $180.99 for my Wrangler after tax and military discount at Cabela's. With that I can't even buy 5 boxes at WalMart for .22LR lol. How crazy is things getting.
I've got the same RI M206 snubby, but the hammer profile has been changed a tiny bit and I put the black rubber grips on it immediately. Paid $235 new, probably the least expensive gun in my collection. I love that gun, it's the only one that stays unlocked, in the headboard behind my pillow.
I have S&W, Ruger, EAA, Taurus, and RIA 206s, and all have been good to me in revolvers. I love the retro look of the RIA 206 but agree the black grip feels better. I though keep it in the retro wood grips for nostalgia and I do carry it at times as my CCW too.
The RIA is a nice 38 for the money, for about the same price, however, I picked up an old Taurus 80 that I liked the trigger and feel of much better and the polished nickel is beautiful The ruger wrangler is a beauty for the money
I really enjoy the Ruger Wrangler! Best $198 I ever spent! Well worth it. It is a fun little plinker and good for teaching new shooters with. Very good to shoot the cheap .22LR that normally jams in my 10-22 and MK IV.
I have 2 of the black Wranglers and a Henry 001 lever action rifle. Great for hunting and plinking. All fire 22 shorts longs and long rifles. Love them all. Wranglers $198 each and the Henry $299 well worth the money.
Surprised with how well that Rock Island shot. Looks okay to me, I'm more interested in reliability and trigger pull. Looks like it wasn't that bad of trigger pull on the first shot. Way back in the early 90's Army CID used the Smith and Wesson .38 snub nose as the assigned weapon. Nice gun, but in our training we fired from a fairly quick draw from the holster, at basically waist level and then adjusted on the follow up rounds. That first shot was single action, and the trigger pull was like nine pounds. The first shot was almost always pulled sideways, and then the rest were easy. The RI looks easy on all.
I actually own two Rock Island revolvers and the single action pulls are very nice. The double action gets a little heavy just before the hammer drops but it's still lighter than my S&W Model 642 trigger pull. As far as reliability I have never had a single problem with either revolver.
I:ve owned and carried my m 206 for about 5 years. I've never used the plastic grips. The gun is sort of like an ugly and not quite trained puppy that makes up for being ugliness by being so lovable as it chews up your favorite slippers. Lately, my carry is my Charger Arms Undercover, with the Rock Island as my nightstand gun, but occasionally I carry Rocky. And Rocky has never failed to go "BANG" when I pull the trigger.
I appreciate you reviewing the Rock Island .38. That company seems seriously concerned with quality in both their firearms and ammunition. They have become one of my favorite companies.
The RIAs have solid designs and good guys on the line. They keep the price of this revolver low by using a less expensive metal. [This is by their own statement.] For many applications, the difference to the end user is minimal, so they're a good budget buy.
Hello Johnny. Anyone carrying a double action revolver should practice shooting double action, but like you said, most people don't. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on my video.
R. I. .38; +P, only when necessary. Since practice with carry ammo is necessary to maintain proficiency and keep fresh carry ammo by using up the old stock in practice.
The real beauty of this video was the Ruger Wrangler. Bought one to test it against the Rough Rider (no real contest but people like having options) to select a SA revolver for Cowboy Action Shooting for the BSA. The reload time was the single biggest factor after safety. The solution was spare cylinders for each gun. Called Ruger and to my surprise, no fitting is required for spare cylinders. The cylinder from one Wrangler will function in any other Wrangler and they are pretty inexpensive at $50 per cylinder.
@@mixup98 sadly that was something they said they weren't doing. I guess we will have to continue paying double for the Single Six for that kind of action.
@@thomashodgson2278 that was the primary reason we went with the heritage, the 2nd cylinder...the rugers back then with both cylinders seemed exorbitant in price comparably...you would think a company smart enough to manufacture decent firearms would have at least 1 person in market research...
Am I the only person who likes the look of the Rock Island Armory revolver?. Its just nice and simple and compact and I do love wood on a gun. Shame about the Derringer, and the Ruger is a bargain in my opinion, would be a nice gun just for taking out and having fun with of an evening and if you had to you could smoke a fool with one 😉Great video as always. All the best.
Maybe I did exaggerate the ugliness of my revolver but the grips are still ugly 😁 All the best to you too my friend and we thank you for watching our video.
You are not the only one who likes the look of the M206. The Wrangler is very fun. Picked one up last year. If you look around, you can find them for less than $200. Yes, the Heritage Rough Rider is cheaper ($125), but the Ruger is made better and is more accurate.
@@mixup98 You guys keep the videos fun and informative. I like budget priced guns..I'm closer to budget range guns than elite super duper tuned handguns...
the rock island is not ugly. well maybe a little. now my two hi point pistols are double ought ugly, heavy, clumsy BUT the darn things work . I love my ruger wrangler. cheeper or high dollar pistols, if they don’t work flawlessly and I can’t fix them they will be paper weights , door stop, parts gun or a last stand gun for when no more ammunition for outher guns nana and papa
I've never shot a Hi-Point pistol but I keep hearing that they are extremely reliable. That is good to know because someday I might pick one up and do a review on it. Have a great weekend nana and papa!
@@mixup98 I find it fascinating when. meet someone telling me about all the hi point pistols blowing up . then I tell about papa’s 45 acp plus p hi point. how I reload it for self defense and hunting with 45 super. adding insult to them , oh that’s ok 👍 I’m my hi point and my Taurus pt 845 45 acp but you’ll probably have to spend some pretty good money for supported barrel, heavyer recoil spring to slow down cycle speed to keep from damage to frame, heavy magizene spring, maybe bushing and fireing pin spring. oh you did that to your hi point and Taurus 45 , s ? oh no I didn’t need to seeing they operate flawlessly and no pressure signs on the 45 super brass . but I don’t shoot a bunch in them. just limited to hunting and self defense. for target shooting hard cast lead and ball. you see the people I know who owns hi point pistols are not having trouble making them work and a local gun shop good me the only trouble they have is making the hi point pistols not work. the darn things just work. Nana and papa the hunter wishing you well.
I love every Ruger I have ever owned. They also have the best customer service On Earth! I also recently purchased my first Rock Island firearm, a 4" version M200. I absolutely love that pistol! It is so much fun to shoot. Great video and really accurate!
I regularly carry the ugly... or peashooter as I call her and I got to say I hated them polymer grips she came with, in my opinion the wood is far better
I own a number of Ruger firearms, and have owned quite a few more. I gotta be honest, the one I like the least is my Wrangler. To be honest, I don’t know if you can find anything else as good for less than $200, so I probably shouldn’t complain. But you get what you pay for.
For me, with arthritis in my hands, the loading gate is tough to operate. And if it was a bit bigger it would be easier to get to load. Fun to shoot though. I imagine a younger person wouldn't have my trouble.
Yep, I would have probably been cussing. Really like that Ruger Wrangler. Had the heritage rough Rider loved it. Always liked these budget gun reviews ; you guys did an excellent job.
I have the Bond Arms Grizzly in 410 45 LC never had a miss fire , failure to extract and the more I use it the smoother it gets. With the rebound hammer its safe without using the safety. The cost is more than the Bearman but you get what you pay for.
Yes you do and that is why I own a Bond Arms Rowdy .45 ACP and I absolutely love it. Someday I will do a comparison video between the Bond and Bearman and we'll see which one wins 😁
I think that Armscorp is DEFINITELY the best looking of the three, and indeed, one of the best looking revolvers around. It has a nice matte finish, and crisp lines, like a 40s era Willys jeep. By the way, unbeknownst to many, a lot of excellent firearms are made in the Philippines.
Another fine review 👌. As far as the Derringer is concerned you would be better off throwing it at the target than shooting it. I love my RIA .38.purchased on your recommendation. It's a throwback to the Colt Detective.
A lot of people don't like the flat black finish. It's a personal opinion thing. Watch some of the Wrangler reviews, and see how many people hat it just because of the finish (Cerakote).
For a collector, the bond arms is nice and well built but not really good for defense and painful to shoot, (I think because of a higher bore axis and rotational forces), although it is heavy for size. I won't be shooting mine anymore and may sell it. I do like my new Baretta 21a inox. It's fun. My Khar CM9's aren't too bad for inexpensive semi- autos and Taurus makes some nice inexpensive revolvers. My Khars and Taurus 38spl and Taurus 357mag were all around $300.
I don't think the Rock Island is ugly. It has a utilitarian work horse aura & you both shoot well with it. Wouldn't be the end of the world if it ended up in an evidence locker after a legal & justified case of self-defense.
I agree with your assessments. The Wrangler looks good and looks fun. The derringer is really poorly executed and it should not hurt to A) Pull the trigger, and B) The recoil should not be so painful. Both issues are design issues. The RIA revolver is hard on the eyes, but they work! I'd buy it.
The 206 may be ugly. But, it works. In a self defense situation, ugly don't matter. I've owned one for a good while. So far, it's been a very good shooter.
I have an old 1970s F.I.E. deringer in 38 special,I've carried it for years when I'm gold panning, if I drop it in the creek I'm out like $20 .. LOL the trigger pull is right around 94 pounds but I can 'usually' hit a snake at 8 feet with a CCI shot load, but it always go bang IF you're strong enough to pull the trigger thru....
Thanks for the heads up on the bearman, I did not think the .38 was all that ugly, at least it went bang when you pulled the loud switch, Stay Safe Guys.
I've got a Rock Island M200, which is the 4" barrel version of the 206 with black rubber grips, and it is indeed not a beauty queen, but it's rugged, it shoots great and has a really nice trigger. I really love it! I also have a Cobra brand derringer that looks just like that Bearman in your vid. However, mine's in .38 Spl and has no issues with firing or extraction whatsoever. I think your 9mm there probably headspaces on the cartridge mouth, and that's very hard to calibrate especially if there's a heavy crimp on the case mouth now and then...probably the cause of your misfires and "wedgies." Also, there's a little secret to their type of trigger (Cobra and Bearman) which is to hold it with your index finger not on the trigger, but placed alongside in the groove between the two barrels, then use your middle finger as the trigger finger...then just "point and shoot"...works great. I'd also remove that trigger guard...totally not needed on this. Middle trigger finger also gives you a better hold on the grips using your ring and little fingers, mitigates recoil like that, too. I have no idea why Bearman thought a rimless cartridge would be a good idea...
I have the rock island and I changed the grip. It is absolutely the best revolver I’ve ever had. Shoots well with hardly any recoil. The black grip makes it look more aggressive and manly. On the other hand, COBRA IS A SHIT COMPANY THAT MAKES SHIT GUNS. I had the cobra/bearman derringer and it broke the first time I fired it. The customer service is trash. They kept the gun for months and never fixed it. I had to threaten to take to small claims court because it was past the point of getting a refund. They finally offered me a new gun. I said no I don’t want your junk or your services ever again.
When my sister was looking for an inexpensive pistol, I picked up a RIA 206 for around $200. Was it ugly? Yep!! Did it shoot well? Yep! I took my sister to the range and taught her to shoot her very first gun, and by the end of that session, I had confidence in both my sister and the revolver. It was ugly, but no issues firing and it was accurate at short range. I sort of started to miss that ugly sucker after gifting it to my sis.
It looked to me that the Wrangler was spot on. I watched another video comparing three cowboy action .22s. The only one that was hit where you aim was the Heritage. I used to have a couple of them through the years but I don't have anywhere outdoors to shoot and emptying and reloading takes up a lot of my indoor range time.
I’ve purchased a Ruger Wrangler recently, and I was wondering who makes that holster and gun belt setup you have. I’ve been in the market for a quality leather western style setup. I’d appreciate any input you might have.
I have the Rock Island (the Ugly) and I kept the original grips on it. I actually think it's cute. Kinda reminiscent of the Rockford Files, Cannon, and Mannix tv series character carries. Thanks for the videos. Keep 'em comin'.
Or Steve McQueen shooting the bad guy in "Bullitt" at the airport terminal. McQueen takes him out with his 6-shot snubnose while the guy is blasting away with his semi-auto probably 9mm.
@@robertslusser6753 McQueen's firearm was Colt Diamondback snubby....which I'd wager was for the distinct look....stands out more than the usual S&W 36 or Colt Detective Special you see police using from that time period.
FYI, the NRA changed the rules to keeping the firearm pointed in a safe direction for 30 seconds after a misfire. 10 seconds isn't long enough... especially in a piece of junk Derringer like that.
That Rock Island is beautiful, reliable and the most useful between those three

@@mixup98 I kinda wish all MY firearms were matte black like the Ugly, but I think it's just right. 😉
The RIAs have solid designs and good guys on the line. They keep the price of this revolver low by using a less expensive metal. [This is by their own statement.] For many applications, the difference to the end user is minimal, so they're a good budget buy.
I was going to buy bearman..,but found out all problems on u tube ,canceled my order and got the m206 instead great decision!
Yes indeed and you made a wise decision Larry 👍🤠
I like your reviews because you show that you CAN shoot double action revolvers in the double action mode. Most people ONLY shoot single action.
Hello Johnny. Anyone carrying a double action revolver should practice shooting double action, but like you said, most people don't. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on my video.
Another Great Video, she's not so ugly and she could keep you safe. Keep up the good work.
You're right Lanny, she's really not that ugly but it made for a good title for my video 😎
Your reviews are really excellent and it’s great you and your son work together on these!!!
Thanks so much Bob. I love making these videos with my son and we thank you for watching them.
R. I. .38; +P, only when necessary. Since practice with carry ammo is necessary to maintain proficiency and keep fresh carry ammo by using up the old stock in practice.
I have a wrangler cowpoke edition love that pistol.
👍🤠
I love revolvers take them over autoloaders , more dependable !!!
I have the Rock Island Armory M - 200 4" bbl. I love it in both single and double action. Very reliable and accurate.
The Ruger wrangler is a cool cowboy pistol
We have 2 of those Wranglers one in that silver and a metallic brown bronze but are great and work fun plinkers especially for the price great video.
I think that Rock Island Armory looks pretty good. It's got a 1930's retro look. I like it.
yeah I'd love if they offered that look on a 22. It'd be a pretty good placeholder for a reproduction of Smith and Wesson's old "Kit Gun"
Hello Thomas. Thanks for the info on the spare Wrangler cylinder. Now if Ruger would just chamber the Wrangler in .22 magnum!
I'd love to come plink with you all. That looks like a great time all day. That RW is super nice for the price.
Nah, I like the wood ria grips on the m206
That fade in was just the most cheesy, charming, Twilight Zone thing I've ever seen. And I LOVED it lmao
Yes it's cheesy but what the heck....I'm having fun! Thanks for the great comment John, you made me smile.
@@mixup98 You guys keep the videos fun and informative. I like budget priced guns..I'm closer to budget range guns than elite super duper tuned handguns...
@@mixup98
I loved the fade in ❤️
the rock island is not ugly. well maybe a little. now my two hi point pistols are double ought ugly, heavy, clumsy BUT the darn things work .
Hello Robert. Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment on my video. I have also loved every Ruger that I have owned over the years.
The RI 200 look fun to shoot and you really can't complain about that price!
I regularly carry the ugly... or peashooter as I call her and I got to say I hated them polymer grips she came with, in my opinion the wood is far better
I have two Wranglers. I love them. Fun guns and I like the way they look.
Awesome! Thanks for the great feedback, Richard.
That Rock Island 38 looks like a sweet gun to conceal carry. I’ll take the Ugly one please!
Good choice Poker Joker 👍
Yup, I'd like to find the RIA.
Great video I owned one of those Derringers they give new definition to JUNK and unsafe
Ruger, always good, that Rock Island38? Surprisingly accurate little snub nose, Derringer? Love my Bond arms! Great vid !
Thanks guys .
You guys have way to much fun! Thanks for the great info and entertainment.
What you talking about...that little Rock Island may be ugly but she sure can cook 👍
Thanks for watching our videos Wayne 👍🤠 👍😎
that derringer lived up to its name, the bad. you throwing that rock in the back of the truck, was the best shot. thanks
I used to be pretty damn good at throwing rocks when I was younger. Must have thrown a million of them growing up in the desert. 😁😁
@@mixup98 😁
I wouldn't say that Rock Island is ugly, looks like a classic gangster piece from the 30s.
A lot of people don't like the flat black finish. It's a personal opinion thing.
Watch some of the Wrangler reviews, and see how many people hat it just because of the finish (Cerakote).
I have a Bond Arms Derringer in 45 Colt/ 410 shotgun, that thing is built like a tank and runs very good!
The Ri 38 revolver is a cool little pistol
Great video and sorry about the derringer. I had a .38 derringer by Cobra and the trigger would lock up.Notice I said "had".
Almost got one of those RIAs; ended up getting a Taurus 856. No regrets :D
If it saves your life it's playmate of the month.
I agree with your assessments. The Wrangler looks good and looks fun. The derringer is really poorly executed and it should not hurt to A) Pull the trigger, and B) The recoil should not be so painful. Both issues are design issues.
The RIA revolver is hard on the eyes, but they work! I'd buy it.
Well said Frank and I agree 100%.
Bond Arms Rough and Ready is only $269.
Those Ruger Wranglers are great! They really are allot of fun, easy to use, and very durable. I highly recommend one for plinking. :)
The 206 may be ugly. But, it works. In a self defense situation, ugly don't matter. I've owned one for a good while. So far, it's been a very good shooter.
In self defense, its all about putting the right bullet in the right place. What you use to launch the shot really doesnt matter!
I thought the Rock Island was not bad. I like the wood grips on it
Cute video. Thank you. Beautiful countryside around you!
Thanks for the heads up on the bearman, I did not think the .38 was all that ugly, at least it went bang when you pulled the loud switch, Stay Safe Guys.
You're right Joseph, it's not really that ugly 👍 Thank you for the great comment and you also stay safe out there.
Bond Arms: "We make high-quality derringers with pride and care."
Bearman Industries: "Yeah, but....is quality REALLY that necessary?"
Quality is only necessary if you don't want it to blow up in your hand
@@toddday8774 I mean, frag grenades are better weapons than Derringers are
I have the ugly and I did change the grips for some Pachmayr grips.
Have a bond arms, more beefy, smoother hammer, just better built than bearman.
I just bought a Rock Island M206. I think it looks pretty good with the rubber grips.
I put Pachmayr Colt Diamondback grips on mine. Vast improvement.
Gotta love those Rugers, from one Sturm and ruger fan to another, really enjoy you and your son's video's!🇺🇸
I’ve purchased a Ruger Wrangler recently, and I was wondering who makes that holster and gun belt setup you have. I’ve been in the market for a quality leather western style setup. I’d appreciate any input you might have.
Bianchi makes a very nice one
It's a very general revolver holster I found a real leather holster for mine in the clearance bin at my local sports store.
Any holster that will fit a Ruger Single Six or Colt SAA will fit the Wrangler. They're the same frame size.
Tripple K is my go to fir good gun leather
I have the Rock Island (the Ugly) and I kept the original grips on it. I actually think it's cute. Kinda reminiscent of the Rockford Files, Cannon, and Mannix tv series character carries. Thanks for the videos. Keep 'em comin'.
I will and thanks for watching them.
Thanks for sharing your videos and keep them coming please.
Forget the Bearman, get a BOND ARMS derringer. It's built like a tank and it is VERY reliable.
FYI, the NRA changed the rules to keeping the firearm pointed in a safe direction for 30 seconds after a misfire. 10 seconds isn't long enough... especially in a piece of junk Derringer like that.
i am looking at one of those rock islands as a fishing and camping gun.
