    I'm working with the local civil protection director to make a prototype of a torpedo style rescue floatation device to be donated and mounted on natural wood posts at our most historically dangerous beaches.
    These torpedoes are abusively priced ($150 USD), not available locally here in México and not available in all-natural materials but I'm working to change that.
    We need a local bioplastics supplier with materials well suited for this purpose with sheet plastic that can be manually heat-formed over a mold. And for a much larger scale impact, we need an estimate of the cost of mold that could be used with recycled plastics, bioplastics and biodegradable plastics also to injection mold them for us. If we can raise the funds to pay for the mold ourselves, the devices can be relatively very inexpensive which will make them very accessible and help save lives everywhere they're used.

    The transcription of the video:
    This program will explain the various types of processing machines used to make the wide range of plastic products in use throughout our lives. A good start is injection molding. injection molding is used to make plastic parts using two hard molds that when closed are injected with melted plastic to form individual parts. Here's how it works. Material gravity flows into the injection machine screw where it is melted by the compressing motion of the screw and then inject it into the mold to form the part or parts. The mold is quickly cool part solidified, the mold opens to release the parts and the mall closes again to repeat the cycle over and over again. Molding cycles can last anywhere from one second for tiny parts made in tiny molding machines to minutes for large parts made in presses the size of a building. Extrusion processes use the same plastic melting operation as injection molding but there is no mold and the resin compressing screw rotates constantly and product is created continuously. Exclusion uses a die, a hollow form that molten plastic is pushed through to create a specific shape and thickness of water bath or spray chamber then cool the extruded shape and often provide pressure and or vacuum controls to properly size the product as it passes through. Belts are cleated pullers apply smooth tension on the product and keep it moving in pace with the extruder. A cutter or sock create the final product length, or a Winder creates fools of the final product.
    There are many variations to the extrusion process, but a mixture of extrusion molding is found in the blow molding process where plastic is continuously extruded into a tube shape and then clamp to the mold and blown into a shape with compressed air. It's a process that often operates in a shuttle movement with a set of molds each mold takes a turn grabbing a section of extruded tube called a paracin and shuttling it to one side to blow it into a bottle shape. Letting it cool and then releasing it to be filled with product or shipped. Each mode alternates with the second Bolt doing the same thing for maximum productivity.
    The same blow molding process can also utilize multiple extruders for what is called Co extrusion. Co extrusion is used to create bottles made up of multiple layers and each layer processes special characteristics like suitability for food contact an outside color for brand awareness. Ultraviolet light protection for long shelf life of the product a layer of regrind for economical reuse of scrap and many times barrier and adhesive layers are included to separate and bond layers for a tough cohesive bottle.
    High volume form of bull molding uses many moles mounted onto a continuously rotating wheel mechanism. The extruder creates a hollow tube and as the wheel rotates each of its molds will open grab a paracin and from the extruder die blow the paracin and into a bottle allow it to cool and then place it onto a conveyor producing and continuous stream of finished bottles originating from that continuous flow of plastic from the extruder.
    These wheel machines can also produce Co extruded bottles containing layers designed to meet the needs of the product and to use reclaimed material for maximum economy and recycling benefits.
    The very popular sales plastic bottles for carbonated beverages has created a unique process for blow molded bottles made specifically from polyethylene terephthalic or PET. For PET blow molding bottles are first created in a test tube shape injection molding preform and then in a separate operation reheated and blown into their final shape. This two-stage process creates bottles that we as consumers know to be thin walled yet capable of containing gases carbonated beverages without losing pressure or exploding even if they are dropped.

    In the blown film extrusion process then plastic material for products like garbage bags or the sheeting used in construction industry and packaging are produced.
    A very thin die opening which is often fed by multiple extruders faces upward in a round shape. A tall thin continuous bubble is produced vertically by this process and it is cooled as it as it flows upward typically 30 feet or more where it is then folded and brought back down and placed onto rolls or converted into popular film products.
    And all these processes from injection molding to film extrusion rely on Conair products to support their productivity and efficiency.

    Great explanation. I didn't know about the screw. I thought it was a heating element that produced the heat to melt the plastic to then inject into the mold. The screw is much faster for sure and would actually be more consistent with melting the plastic. Thank you!

    • @carcaridon
      @carcaridon Год назад +1

      It's a combo of both. You have to consider screw speeds in cycle times due to excess frictional " sheer " heat that can be added and can change the performance of the part or plastic down the track ( and hopefully before going to customer,always love your QA dept)

    I think there is a mistake in the injection molding simulation. Isn't the heating wire supposted to heat the plastic before injection and while it's in hold and to cool it while it is injected? If blue flow means cooling there's a mistake...

    Thanks for this great video. I have two questions if you don't mind, How in the wheel blow process the billet is blown without a source of blowing?... How the layers are formed in Co-Extrusion?

    • @ConairGroup
      @ConairGroup  4 года назад +7

      Hello Fahad,
      Thank you for submitting your questions. The blow molding process is certainly an interesting one.
      1. In the blow molding process (including when using the wheel), air is required to expand the parison inside the mold. Once the mold is closed, the air is blown into the plastic parison forcing it to expand within the mold. Compressed air is typically used for very tight control of air pressure and volume.
      2. The extrusion die is specially designed to form the layers. These layers typically come into the die from two (or more) different extruders, and the die creates/forms the different layers of the extruded product.
      Please let us know if you have additional questions. Our Conair experts are always on hand to help plastics processors, students, or others interested in learning about the process.

      Hello Rudi,
      Thank you for your question. The Plastics Processing Overview video is a general example of how plastic resin is used to create plastic parts. The type of resin used (including biodegradable) does vary the process to some degree. One of our Conair experts can help you choose the right equipment and establish the best system for your process - taking material type, end product, throughput, and other process requirements into consideration. Can we change PP plastics into HDPE or LDPE plastics?!

    • @felsinferguson1125
      @felsinferguson1125 3 года назад

      Not sure what's being asked - if you're asking if equipment used for processing PP can be used for processing HDPE/LDPE, then yes, although certain adjustments will have to be made. If you're actually asking whether PP can be turned into HDPE/LDPE, the answer is "not without WAY more effort than could ever possibly be worthwhile." Polypropylene ((C3H6)n) and Polyethylene ((C2H4)n) behave in reasonably similar ways at the gross physical scale (melting point, strength, various other characteristics) but they are ENTIRELY different materials, chemically. The idea is sort of like asking if you can turn milk into peanut butter, or bird feathers into steel.
