    As someone who works in recycling and is involved in a family run business in UK, we also sell to Europe, PP is our number 1 product and most sought after, 2nd would HDPE and the rest is a mixture. We actually rarely do PET. By the way, each one of these types has its own grades, for example there are PP plastics that you wouldn't mix together as its harder to sell because of the difference in MFI. Just some insight for you.

      I don't even work in anything recycling or relevant to this video but just having the info allows me to be aware of what kinds of plastics are "bad" (meaning harder to recycle and barely even recycles) and which kinds are good and also that the idea of recycling plastics is to use the same plastic for as many things as you can, presumably the highly recyclable ones, so that it can all flow consistently and the recycling process can function optimally.

  • @MrDavePed

    The only way to effectively sort mixed plastics is to grind them all up together and then separate them by density striation in a controlled density bath.
    Much more efficient that paying people to pick through the garbage. Grind it all up first. Remove one group at a time by gradually increasing the density of your liquid bath medium. You can also apply centrifugal separation as needed.

      The most common type of bottle cap is the plastic cap. Plastic bottle caps are made of polyethylene terephthalate. It is a thermoplastic polymer resin that is a part of the polyester family. This kind of plastic is widely used in beverage and food containers. Depending on the processing method, this material can appear transparent, opaque or white. This type of plastic is usually has the PET abbreviation. It is a different plastic than what the bottle itself is made of. Metal bottle caps are made of steel.

I am curious though, if a person were to collect the correctly sorted plastics (for example 100 type #1 water bottles) is there a market for buyers of these? Outside of municipalities offering around 5 cents per bottle. Im curious if a person does the hard work of sorting plastics based on their number will anyone pay for that?

    Where does medical grade plastic fall?

    • @bjohnson477
      @bjohnson477 7 месяцев назад

      They can be any type of material. Depends on the application. Some are your basic polymers with additives or are manufactured a specific way to have better properties suited for the application.
      We make "medical grade" high impact polystyrene shells for first response pregnancy tests at my place of employment. Common material, but what makes it medical grade are the manufacturing procedures.

    So... why do most PET bottles come with HDPE caps that each leaves a ring that is slightly harder/tedious to remove? Now even some yogurt drinks/fruit drinks are packaged with the mouth part made up of HDPE. I had to use a saw or heated metal to break it apart before recycling.

    • @PlasconPlastics
      @PlasconPlastics  2 года назад +6

      Good question. In an ideal world they should be the same and not sure why they are not. However, you should not need to separate the cap and bottle. This is because HDPE and PET is usually separated in a sink-float tank. PET is less dense then HDPE so the separation process is fairly easy once the entire bottle is grinded down.

    • @bjohnson477
      @bjohnson477 7 месяцев назад
