Becky please harvest your nasturtium seeds. Over the years you will develop some unique variations in the flowers. Things like unusual colors, multicoloured petals, petals which alternate between one color and another, oddly shaped flowers etc. It's so exciting each year to see what you will get. Ours are currently on their 25 generation, and you can imagine how unusual and distinct our nasturtiums are now.

Something to remember: Your little one will be eating at least some solid food before your next big harvest. I made my own babyfood for my twins. You may want to consider pureeing single ingredients and then freezing them in ice cubes (about an ounce each). Vac seal and baby's first food will be from mama's amazing harvest! Great for most things, esp winter squash/pumpkins, applesauce, pear sauce, berries, green beans... you know the routine!

Hey friend! Tip about saving that butternut squash, incase you haven’t used it yet, dip the end of the squash (where the stem was) in paraffin wax because it will preserve the spot that’s exposed. Over the summer I worked for an urban farmer and gardener and he taught me and the summer camp he led this trick when we harvested his summer squash. Happy harvest!! 🎃

When I was first married we were apple pickers for a local orchard every fall. Part of the fall clean up was to cut the sucker branches from the base of the tree and they would use some of them to extend the orchard. I’m sure it can be done with any fruit tree or any tree for that matter, if researched well.

I wanted to try to make some hot sauce with them. There are so many peppers on them they remind me of a Christmas tree. I grew all of them in one grow bag. I live in the Florida Panhandle and it has been extremely hot, humid, and rainy. The bugs have been horrible. My Zucchini did not produce at all this year, but I got a lot of yellow squash. Amazon has them in different sizes & different materials & metals.
One fabric that would be great to use for it is Sunbrella it's a canvas that is used for sailboat covers & awnings & is very durable.
I made our hatch covers, awnings, chart plotter cover & numerous bags over 25 years ago & we now have to have new ones made due to all the years of hurricanes & weather exposure.
I don't think the ones online are made with this fabric, but an insert with divider sections can be made to put into & overlap the outside of the cart could be made to give it long term use & could be removed to be cleaned.
      Just an idea 💡 😊❣

Hey Becky! Your fruit elixirs are a great idea. In order for a alcohol preparation to be shelf stable, it needs to be, at least, 20-25% alcohol. When we use standard 40% alcohol, and add fruit to it, that fruit contains water and can dilute your alcohol a bit. When I do my fruit elixirs I usually add about a quarter cup of 75.5% Everclear to help bump up the alcohol content a bit (I start my elixirs in quarts or half gallon jars). If you used a high proof rum, that might not have to be a consideration. I like to sweeten mine with honey once I strain the fruit and spices from the alcohol. It makes a great "sipping" cordial sort of drink. Good luck and enjoy!

When I was a child, my grandmother had very large apple trees. The type you need a ladder to harvest. When they were mostly ready, the extended family would gather and process into pie and sauce. The nimble steady men & teens were up the ladders harvesting, older kids ferrying the apples into the house. 2 women on pie crust duty (no Cuisinart then!), an older uncle ran the crank machine that peeled and cored the apples, more on apple cutting duty and I recall being in charge of taking their cuts and either putting them into the lemon water to become pie or into the pot for sauce and discarding the rotten bits. I would rotate with my sister on stirring & mashing the sauce. Grandma herself mixed up the apples with cinn & sugar and put into the pie shells, Aunty covered them and into the freezer they went. Grandma had a tall freezer that just held mostly apple pies! All year long, she would pull out a pie when company was over. They were amazing and one of my best memories! Possibly because everyone went home with a pie and container of apple sauce. ;-)

This was my first year gardening and I had squash bugs pretty bad from the get-go.
it was quite the inconvenience, but it's my husband's favorite veggie so I babied those plants till they were DONE for the season.
Here's what I have learned so far ;D
Picking and killing squash bugs and their eggs twice a day (yes, that's not a typo) was my only way to fight off the infestation -because I didn't want to spray my plants with anything.
I hear great things about Neem oil against squash bugs, so that's an organic alternative I am willing to explore next growing season.
Spacing is really important for these plants. The squashes that did best for me were the ones whose leaves were not touching those of another squash plant.
Pruning was a necessary, almost daily, evil. I discovered that (after reaching maturity) the plant doesn't really need any of the older leaves to survive. I made sure to prune off any leaves below the lowest blossom.
Even though zucchini form more of a bush than a vine, helping them growing upward with a tomato cage is going to be my number one priority next year. I am dealing with two teeny-tiny raised beds, so I'm hoping to make the most out of them by training upwards as many plants as I can.
Also, I am going to try to have nasturtium as a companion plant in between my zucchinis, apparently that also helps deterring those pesky bugs.
After this year I can totally relate to the frustration of not being able to grow enough of my favorite crop.
I am rooting for your cayenne pepper plant!
Hopefully it will winter over nicely in your wonderful new home! :D

Any other Southern gardeners screaming “take the squash, Becky, pick it now.” That really stressed me out, so relieved when she picked it!😂😂 squash bugs are satan’s spawn.
Yes, they are squash bugs and you should be squashing every single one of them, adults (brown) and nymphs (grayish white). They overwinter as adults so if there’s a large population of them overwintering they’ll quickly overwhelm next years garden. But, maybe that’s a problem for the new owner. 😬 I’m out in the garden every spring with a hand held vacuum and a roll of duct tape. I suck up the bugs and peel off the copper colored eggs with duct tape. They’ll eventually get the better of me in the heat of summer but I’ve USUALLY had my fill of squash by then.

Yes, those are squash bugs. My neighbor taught me to regularly check under the leaves of the plant for squash eggs. I use a pair of garden snips to cit out the piece of leaf that has eggs on it. Then I just put the piece of leaf in a ziplock. If I see any bugs, I throw them in the ziplock too. Then I zip it closed and just leave it in the sun to cook them. Don’t throw the leaf pieces in the garbage or the eggs will hatch and come back to your plant. I check my plants for eggs about every two to three days. I have found that their breeding season is about 6-8 weeks, then they start dying out. But keep checking for eggs through the season.

Hi Becky! Have you considered overwintering your pepper plants? I didn't know this until recently, but pepper plants are perennials and can live multiple years. For climates with a killing frost, you can prune them back at the end of the season, dig them up, and keep them inside for the winter. Then when it's warm enough next spring/summer you can plant it outside again.
