Diesel atoms are more "compacted" with more hydrocarbons than gasoline which is why it feels oilier and thicker. It stores more energy but burns slower. Think of it like firewood. Dry birch will light quick and burn hot, but oak will burn pretty hot and slow because it's a denser wood.
13 minutes too late to say long chain hydrocarbons and feel smart...
Those longer molecules lend toward being more lubricious. The old sulfur additives and now biodiesel are extra lubricious to preserve the high pressure fuel components that depend on the lubricity in the fuel in order to function correctly. basically, diesel is just really thin oil. hence it being very close to kerosene aka fuel oil.
50/50 2 stroke mix has to work the best
Ah, my favorite element on the periodic table, the diesel atom 😂
Filtered oil from food will do at least 50 laps
McFarland labs needs to be a weekly thing. Always love the lab coat vids
Produce tool safety vids with sound effect of running power equip, but setting up scenes with goody still shots of impersonating "when the pain actually makes it to the brain. And still-shot fakery of the last 3 secs before... "what had happened was...", gets it's still-shot mockery.
The McFarland Lab needs project ideas to do then for the weekly!

Monthly at least
I agree 👍 McFarland labs needs more episodes please
I REALLY want you guys to take this motor apart and see how sparkly clean it is 😂😂
Sparkly from all the metal shavings in it 😂
And how dirty the Diesel "LUBRICANT" is.
…and then run something diesel-powered with the dirty oil-fuel. ;)
The journals must have a lot of wear.
@@shawnpa Every moving part has a ton of wear!
I did this for a sludged up engine, and it worked, the gunk that came out was phenomenal! Ran it through twice.
I did it using kerosene and it worked well to clean up the sludge. Only ran it at idle though for a minute or two.
How long did you run it with the diesel in? Did the engine perform OK afterward, good compression?
@@artichoke60045 Ran for about 15 minutes, drained and refilled with diesel, ran again for 15 minutes, Filled with fresh cheap oil, ran for a week, then changed oil with premium. This was back in the early 80's when Quaker oil was notorious for sludge buildup.Engine was a 302 with sixpack in a 67 mustang.Rebuilt that engine 5 years later. Had a bad crank, bought a BRAND NEW motorcraft crank for $75,, can't do that any more!
I want to see what it looks like coming out and what the filter picked up. I’d bet it’s sparkly clean inside of that engine now😂
I wanna see the engine tore apart after
My diesel ute ingested its own fuel, inside of the motor looked like it was freshly rebuilt. After I had drained 30L of dieselly oil out...
Would really like to see more competitions between the guys. I really enjoyed the boat building content between Cleetus, George and Jimmy.
And the golf cart build!
This. Absolutely. One of my favourite series
Golf cart was my favourite!
Boats suck an sink👎
Yes!
I have a gas 1963 Minneapolis Moline tractor Jetstar 3. The owners manual recommended every five oil changes to and replace the engine oil with diesel and run for 30 seconds. Then drain and replace the filter. To remove carbon buildup from that era's oil & fuel.
Go to the opposite side of the scale and do bearing grease. Super thick stuff.
Honestly I'd like to see the carnage of that engine
Agreed or a follow up video to see if it’ll run again
We need to see them bearings
Open that baby up now......
Was thinking the same
They should send it to that "I do cars" guy
I think it would be cool to see each one of the guys in their own crown vic with their own choice of oil replacement and see who is the last man standing
well we all know Jackstand would cheat and put actual motor oil in a different bottle!! LOL everyone would be blown motor as James is still ,making laps like a boss....haha
Love this idea. Send them to the supermarket to pick a replacement and it cant be a cooking oil
@@GonzoDonzo someone would use flex seal.

Oil behaves like a cushion between the bearing surfaces to reduce friction which otherwise wears on the surfaces. Diesel fuel is a very thin oil and does not act like this as much as a thicker oil. Thus, friction is greater with diesel fuel. However, used as a temporary measure, it works as a great flush to clean the engine sludge out. I have used diesel fuel as a flush many times through the years. Just fil up to the dip stick line and let the hot engine idle for about 10 to 15 minutes and then drain. Refill again with your normal oil.
I did the same with kerosene. Only idled for a minute or two.
Hydrostatic bearings.

The electric turbo needs justice
Would be cool if they turned the oval into a huge Honda Grom track one day
No I hope we grown out of that
@@tylervaughn6328 I disagree. These videos are entertaining because Cleetus has the money and resources to goof around and experiment with things for the heck of it. Racing season is fun, wrenching videos are alright, and life update videos are cool, but these (let's take an idea and make the best video of it we can) type videos are what keeps growth going and Cleetus and crew to de-stress and have some fun away from his multiple round-the-clock responsibilities. I'm sure once the baby is born, he'll take a backseat for a bit and be a father.
I wanna see what the diesel looks like that came out of the engine. Bet it did a good cleaning job on the internals.
On the flip side, I once put one of those oil flush bottles in a VW Rabbit diesel. As soon as it started it went full throttle ! The vapors were entering through the crankcase vent and it revved like crazy> Luckily I was able to stuff a rag in the intake and shut it down after maybe five to ten seconds. Drove it for many thousands of miles after that overspeed!

Hey Cleetus! About Diesel.
Diesel in a Diesel Engine is used as lubricative for the fuel pump in Diesel engines. However, once hot enough, Diesel can start combusting, which will basically make your car into a fire
In old diesel subs the bilge was full of diesel fuel to extend the range of the sub. The snipes used to flip their cigarette butts into the bilge to put them out.
thats a fantastic experiment guys 👏👏👏👏👏 well done 😊 i wonder 🤔 what if you fill the engine with 2stroke oil? 🤗 that will be interesting 😆
That motor is gonna be super clean inside now
Yes exactly.. Should drain the diesel out and put oil back inside again.. Then it's cleaner than the factory XD
this didn't damage it?
@@alf3071 yes its damage it. Engine flush you added to old motor oil. Diesel works like engine flush, and almost all engine flush producers, warning to use only in engine working on idle speed/rpm, and dont drive car with flush in engine. I have a 93 Ford F-150 with a 7.3 idi swap we did about 8 years ago. Somehow we get a lot of diesel in the crank case. Although it's a farm truck and we just add oil and do little to no maintenance. Run alright though.
Since watching this video when originally uploaded I decided to try this myself on my 2002 Ford Explorer with the 4.6L. It had roughly 2 quarts of dirty oil left inside and was topped off with diesel fuel. It has run over 1500 miles since and is still going strong.
Cleeter "science" videos are some of my favorites
He should collab with "I did a thing" for some science .
No doubt
Hydraulic oil would probably last a long time. Also would love to see what's in the pan and how clean the engine is.
That or ATF was my thought. Or if they wanted to get real science-y go after some commercial oils like cooking oils or something fun like that.
We had a guy change the oil on a articulated tractor with a C18 in it, put hydraulic oil in it. Tractor lasted a day before it wiped out the cam and started running like crap
I'd like to see ATF (Automatic Transmission Fulid). Always told it was a good engine cleaner. Used to top off my engine with it right before an oil change. 2 other good suggestions i've seen, Break Fluid and fryer oil.
One other thing i just thought of straight undiluted antifreeze (ethylene glycol)
I remember my dad putting a small amount of atf down the carbs of our cars when I was young. It would chug and backfire occasionally. I can’t say for sure if it cleaned the engine.
I bought a 197? chevy nova that had about 80,000 miles on it around 1983, engine ran great, but had a little lifter tap mainly during start up. I noticed it had a good bit of sludge build up on top of the heads, so, I drained out about 1 quart of oil and added about 2 quarts of purple power degreaser, let the engine idle for about 15 minutes. Then turned it off, let it set about 1 hour, then let it idle about 15 more minutes. Drained out all the gunk, new oil n filter, no more lifter tap, and the car ran great for years.
That is going to be one clean engine on the inside!!
One clean engine is right, as in 1 piece of fused iron that happens to be very clean lol.
@@Trialnerror %50s and 60s cars turned oil to sludge in no time at al. Diesel was a great way to cleanse them.
@@rrp1127 uncle of mine still does 1 gallon of diesel into the engine of his cars every oil change.
Aside from iron and aluminum shavings, yeah!
Yeah I’ve heard the diesel to clean out sludge before
I’d really like to see it done with ATF for sure !
With ATF it would run forever, they'd get bored before they ever hurt it
That might have to be a long-term test, it might just keep going like that!
ATF would make the car run faster as it would clean the internals
Definitely backing this one
Not much will happen other than long term I've run ATF in carbon built up engines to clean them up. But only idled them.
Impressive
Diesel pressure held up
And that was hot lapping not just pottering around

Swap ATF into the Engine, and Engine Oil into the Transmission. Two seperate tests to see what lasts longer
We used to run 3 Quarts of oil and 2 Quarts of atf in a junk yard engine to clean the varnish out of them. Never had any trouble with that combo. We would start it up and let it idol to temp, go for a cruse around the block but never over 3k rpm and change it out for good oil.
If you use old school engine oil without the additives in it it works just fine.
THIS
(Edit: the following comment is inaccurate. See my later comment.)
It would last quite a while. Viscosity is the most important factor when choosing a lubricant for an application. The viscosities between atf and motor oil are similar, but transmission fluid dosen't have the detergents, dispersents, and base additives of engine oil. So the transmission fluid will break down faster in an engine, meaning you will see more varnish, deposits, and erosion of the soft metals due to the high acid content. These things would take thousands of miles to make themselves apparent.
Put lots of zddp additive in that trans fluid, all that trans fluids is.... is a detergent!
Atleast he has alot of track time under his belt.
Sorry if I am new to their channel.
Interesting result. I figure there were still enough lubricant from the engine oil, adding the diesel or gasoline will probably just clean it. What do I know.
Im actually impressed with that ole 4.6 that thing held on for a while lol
You guys should do a dyno test with engine oil vs diesel to see if the thinner diesel frees up any hp but also I’d like to see what those bearings look like
That would be an interesting test. Thinner oil should free up power to a point, but I'd guess that the extra friction from diesel being a much worse lubricant would more than negate the reduction in drag from the fluid being thinner. I'd also like to see an engine teardown video.
I know transmission fluid vs engine oil makes more power in outlaw gokarts
The inside of that engine is now absolutely sparkling clean.
My grandpa used to drain the oil, put diesel in the crank case and idle it for five minutes, drain it again and put new oil in at every oil change. Swore by it. Said it kept the engine clean.
His cars ran for a long time, so i'm guessing it didn't hurt anything.
Definitely I believe the engine might have just hydro locked and I bet once they drain it and put hood oil in it would run again.
Mine would use Varsol which is a solvent made by Exxon to do the same thing to old cars he’d get to the sludge out of them. Same basic procedure. Drain oil. Add Varsol. Run for a few minutes, drain it and change filter. Add oil back in. Worked great as far as I could tell.
Idk about diesel but I always put a bottle of Seafoam in my crank case for the tank of gas before an oil change and my cars run like tops lol
old mechanics trick to clean an engine of sludge. people have been doing it since basically diesel was created.
@@dontyouworryaboutit_ you bet bro, Seafoam is great stuff!
Your team should harvest the ford blue emblems from the crown vic going out to pasture. You could put them in customers packages.
Not sure about over there, but here in the UK its a fairly common cheap way if you have a particularly dirty engine, not really well looked after with regards to oil changes, very black oil etc, a cheap and easy engine flush is to empty the oil, fill it with diesel start and let it idle for 5 minutes then drain and refil with correct oil. People do it all the time here with no negative effects and leaves the engine pretty clean. Did it on my car when I had it 10 months ago, now done 7k miles so i'm due to change it and its still pretty clean on the dipstick
I'd love to the top end pulled and have a look at those bearings!
I wonder what happened, it sounded like the block completely seized up. I was honestly expecting fire or an explosion.
These are the sort of Science lessons that have been missing from my mechanical engineering degree.
Also respect to Dr spray em all for wearing what looks like a chefs jacket

A Panther platform never fails to impress! These Panthers and the GM B-body cars are the best full size cars ever made!
Do an engine tear down to see what gave up. That would be interesting.
My guess is that it ran out of diesel, bahahaaaa
Seeing as it maintained "oil pressure" right up until it quit, I'm guessing the piston rings seized up in the cylinders. Because if the bearings went bad, then it should've started losing oil pressure before it quit running??? I could be wrong of course.
@@entrepreneurhomeboy It would be very interesting to see if it freed once it cooled. I'm agreeing with you that the rings probably seized. Let things cool and wiggle them a little and it might free and work again.
It might start up when it cools down.
@@RodknockRhett That's what I'm thinking. Judging by the coolant leaking out at the end and someone mentioning it leaking while he was driving, it seems like the cooling system failed and it likely just died because it overheated.
I'm gonna need a teardown video please. I gotta see inside this engine.
I completely agree. I bet it looks Super Clean.

@@richardmallos5940 Agreed, people use diesel for cheap parts washing & is sworn to work as an oil sludge flush by car guys.

Same here. I love the new stuff, but I do miss the vids of them wrenching on the cars in the shop.
Old timers back in the day used to run a mixture of diesel and kerosene to clean out high mileage gunk. Of course they wouldn't run it long, and would do a few oil changes afterwards. I would be interested to see, if this thing blows up, a tear down to see, how if at all, well it cleans.
Yall should bring back the long unboxing vids. Those were great
I bet that's the cleanest engine on the inside ever
was wondering the exact same thing
As a last resort with a GM Turbo 350 trans that had supposedly been overhauled and was just not working right, I drained the fluid including from the torque converter then replaced it with diesel! Drove it around the neighborhood enough to get a little time in each gear and multiple shifts. It ran exactly like it should!! Replaced with the right tranny fluid and drove it daily for a few months before selling it. A lot of metal filings were in the filter when I drained the diesel. Saw the buyer a few times at the bar and was always running fine! I think I sold the truck too cheap!!!
Its already been explained well. But as a fun fact, crude oil basically gets distilled and separates into different thicknesses. That’s the fundamental difference between everything from rear end oil all the way to high octane fuels.
It would be great to pick up the Wheelman Crown Vic idea you had a year or so ago.
It would be cool to have a leaderboard for a lap around the FF. Maybe make it more of a "road course" including the infield. Start with you whole team, include their storys, how they ended up working for you etc etc, that I'd like to see!!
I agree.
Ive said this before. We need to make this top comment on every video. Even if it goes to the second channel. Bring wheelman back and defiantly start with the crew!
I'd like to see more Wheelman also.. I think they only ever did Taylor and Jeremy?
We want to see the diesel drained out and the valve covers pulled. I bet its spotless! It also may fire up after it cooled.
Fyi, red diesel is the exact same as pump diesel. It has red dye in it because its not taxed.
Cooking oil would be cool to see next, also maybe wax? Will the motor heat keep the wax hot enough to stay melted???
So you should put differential oil in the next one. See how slow it revs, if the oil pump can pump it to the top efficiently etc.
I think either brake fluid or straight coolant would be interesting choices
I wonder what power steering fluid would do.
What about vegetable oil haha
Now that’s going to be a clean engine 😂 would have been interested in seeing what It looked like draining it after.
Please do a tear down video of this engine. I would love to see what it and the diesel looks like!
We need to see this in the next experiment video:
Get a healthy Crown Vic and shorten the rear end ratio. Take it from the normal 3.27 and put a 3.88 or 3.93 or something in it and see if it makes gains on the oval, acceleration to 60 mph, etc. I would like to see the Crown Vic engine optimized through other means than power add-ons.
It's a 2 valve 4.6, it'll benefit from anything a 96+ sn95 mustang would.
3.73 would work great in these for the track
A kid I work with has a Ford Five Hundred and I think that would make for an awesome sleeper car, because it is AWD. Almost never see those on the road and I'm not even sure what engine it has lol. Looks very similar to a Crown Victoria though.
We use diesel in our crankcase to clean the internals. Works great. Pour in 6 qts and let it idle for about 10 min and drain. Does the engine wonders. Especially on high mileage engines. It will clean all bearings and journals and remove sludge and soot
Marvel mystery oil does better

Cooking oil, Iets see how well that holds up. Great content 👍🏼
It will hold up perfectly.
For a basic explanation thats easier to understand for the average person.
When refining crude oil in the way of fuel, diesel is refined before petrol "gasoline".
Diesel has a higher boiling point than petrol, and by such is more viscous/thicker.
Engines use oil working off a viscosity scale, 10w/40 20w/50 etc which measures how quickly an oil flows at both cold and general operating temp...
Being that diesel is more viscous/thicker it offers better lubrication for the bearings than petrol does.
Funfact from old drag racing:
Diesel oil however has cleaning properties, and was an old drag engine builders go to when building a modified motor e.g. no oil in the motor after honing/boring etc to eliminate cross contamination of oils, but diesel oil was used as its viscous enough to keep the bearings lubricated adequately but also kept bores clean, from excessive carbon build up, however tends to lose its viscosity quicker but can equal quicker e.t. at the strip and if changed constantly keep a cleaner internal engine
So did you guys do a follow up video of the engine breakdown to show how much engine damage occurred during this test?
Watching Jackstand and George do there little run after the car started was kinda funny to watch 😂
