German WWII 44 Dot Camouflage Effectiveness

- In this video we look at the effectiveness of the German WWII Erbsenmuster camouflage in a woodland environment during the summer time in north Texas. This video will consist of numerous scenes where each will begin with a concealed stationary position (both with & without the use of vegetation), followed by a movement phase out of the initial position. The purpose of the video is to give the viewer a chance to see the individual camouflage pattern and how it looks and blends into this environment. There will be varying degrees of how much of the uniform will be exposed to the viewer, some scenes will only expose little more than perhaps my head, while other scenes will have virtually no vegetation covering.
As with all the videos I do, I generally try to carry equipment and weaponry reflective of the country of origin/time period with the pattern. However, my impressions are NEVER fully 100% reflective. In this video for instance I have some items that were not standard issue/post war (Sniper veil, 44 Dot hat, E. German gloves, etc.) If you want references on what was actually issued and worn, there are plenty of references online to research that. My video is NOT one of those references.

when u can hear the bugs, it's HOT
Your videos make me realize two things:
1) Uncovered skin and uncamouflaged weapons, gear and boots really make you stand out.
2) The camouflage pattern itself doesn't matter that much. This 71 year old pattern is almost as good as recent patterns like Multicam. At normal combat distances (50+ meters), one is as good as almost any other.
Whereas a military would have to pay royalties for something like Multicam, older patterns like the one in this video are probably off-patent by now and free for anyone to copy.
@@nowayjose668 lol I work construction and work in this pattern. The russian crews give me an odd look, but I figure thats more to do with the structure of their faces. 😂
@@nowayjose668 Erbsentarn is a piece of art compared to Flecktarn
@@niccolopaganini4268 True for most terrains
Great ! 👍👍 Just: uncovered skin NO ! 😮💀
Man that was a great pattern for WW2,the germans were way ahead of the united states.
They mostly fought against Russia and other European countries.
Yeah, if only they were technologically fifteen years ahead of schedule, then they could've started the war with rockets and nukes. Or if you went back in time and micromanaged everything with hindsight...
In all seriousness, Maybe the Germans could've won if the British and French didn't declare war for Poland, but that's like half the war off the table. If they were only warring with Soviets on that one front, the Italians would've joined in when they were ready, and the Fins and other minor axis supporters might've gotten more serious in helping the germans out.
P42 frogskin?
@@Jack-ol7bh In all seriousness, glad they lost.
It's still A great pattern
Very effective especially if a German Infantry platoon was concealed in a defensive position because each squad had one machinegun team. The forests of Western Europe were very dark and had lots of ferns covering the ground so its very hard to see individual soldiers and gun positions. The Hurtgen forest was planted by the Germans in the 1930s as a holiday retreat. To the Americans in 1944 it was called "The Meat Grinder",it took several Infantry Divisions to defeat the Germans because units had to be rotated in and out due to the high casualties they sustained.Lots of American Infantry replacements were killed even on their first day on the line.Soldiers became NCOs and Officers in hours. If you survived you got promoted very quickly until you got hit and the next man stepped in.
I bet you've seen the movie When Trumpets Fade
I personally think this is one of the best camouflage patterns you have tested.
Love hunting in my German camo. I use an SS oak A pattern type II smock and dot44 trousers. Since they're meant to be worn over the wool uniform I can layer my cloths and not worry as much about color.
Do you use a Kar98k?
Bruce honestly I would use a kar98k or mosin lol

Excellent camouflage uniform and the use of it. This design while over 70 years old holds up today, which makes sense. A very "ahead of it's time" idea back then, that works just as well today!
I did not see you one single time. Even when I reminded the video, until you moved, knowing where you were, you blended in perfectly with your surroundings. Utterly amazing!
I really like your channel. The Opfor and Camouflage videos are my favorites. Thank you for all the time and effort you put into your content and keep the awesome videos coming!
Wow! That's just as effective as any modern cammoflage! I'm impressed! Only time I could spot you was when your face was showing! If you painted your face, I never would have spotted you until you moved! Great stuff! Keep it coming!!🤜🤛🇺🇸🇺🇸
Very impressive. When still I had a hard time finding you, or failed completely. At first I was thinking the coloration wasn't quite right for this terrain, but as the video went on, it worked incredibly well against the less vivid greens and earth tones. Great video as always and cool K98k! Just picked up a Swedish M38 and eventually hope to pick up a German variant
I really enjoy your videos, and find it amazing how you seem to come up with the appropriate gear for the camo. It's like "Where's Waldo" for outdoor enthusiasts. Good job, keep 'em coming.
Thanks
This video made me realize that it does not matter what kind of camouflage you are wearing if you hide behind a tree nobody is going to see you.
Thanks for doing this video. It answered a lot of questions I have and showed me that i am on the right track with my replacement camouflage search !
In my opinion this is the best camaflarge pattern ever made its far superior to anything you can get today and it works even better in an Autumnal setting someone should make it in a more modern cut uniform
The Russians have actually revived many of these older German WWII patterns and have some modern day uniform cuts in them.
One more thing, if you did more cammoflage effectiveness videos. With different color rucksacks, like MARPAT Woodland, with a Multicam rucksack. Or vise versa or any patterns that blend well really. Your the only guy on RUclips effectively doing these videos. So I'd love to see you blending different cammoflage patterns. Maybe not just with rucksacks. Maybe use different Tops and bottoms to? Just something to think about. Thanks again brother! I always enjoy the knowledge I gain watching your channel!🤜🤛🇺🇸🇺🇸
9:52 Was the best, even that close the Dot 44 was superbly effective, the Germans were the masters at camouflage during WW2 and it into an art form.Splinter A&B,Tan and Water, Oakleaf & Palm Tree no name but a few were also equally as effective as Dot 44 in their respective theatres of war.
By far my favourite Camo pattern! Kinda hard to paint on miniatures though... It's cool to see the camo in action, good stuff.
I just got my hands on a German WWII 44 Dot Camo uniform and also a reversible Platenenmuster blouse. Is amazing how good they are!
Good camouflage pattern, I was able to see you a few times, but most of it was good! Great video man!
+Jason Zermach Thanks man.
Hi Brent, thank you very much for posting this video! I didn't see this video until now and it confirmed to me how wonderfully effective the pattern then and still is. I think I've said this before but I have never seen this pattern tested by anyone but only seen pictures.
I think what makes this pattern so effective are three things:
1. The dominate color is brown and light brown that matches the ground if on prone and dry twigs and leaves if in kneeling position. Woodland pattern's success was due to generous use of brown, light brown, and black but it would of course be less effective on the ground but performs far better in woodland environment than Dot-44. Both patterns uses green sparingly (somewhat for Woodland pattern).
2. The tightness of the pattern matching clutter and clusters of twigs, leaves as well as the ground....maybe too tightly while the the Marine P42 seemed perfectly proportional to.
3. And it seemed to be the first pattern to transition from one color portion to another... something that Multicam does extremely well.
However it is of course not the best pattern because it uses dots which the eye can catch more easily as you know making P42 a bit more superior.
I've been wanting to see this one for awhile. Great vid, love the show!
Lancaster Hornet Thanks
Excellent camouflage. Very effective!
wow it keeps well in light and dark thanks for showing brent and spending this stuff isn't cheap I checked into it for a fall type camo
kabaruser Yeah it can be a pretty penny.
There is a story about when the West German Army was created. The former enemies are talking about how to create it. Supposedly the one thing that the Germans would not budge on was their camouflage.
I love watching your videos, it's like playing Wheres Waldo for Grown Ups!
You ought to try out Splittertarn also. I think that camo pattern is just sexy. Well, I think that about nearly all the German camo patterns really.
Glocknade Clipazine Actually the Wehrmacht's splintertan is a very, VERY good pattern. It is being used in Ukraine by some groups now, it's just the right pattern and color for both urban and forest. Would like to see Brent trying em :)
Harbard Just in like a BDU format or old style re-enactor stuff? I have a splinter padded uniform that I wear out skiing with a feldgrau m43. I've actually never seen an effectiveness test of it, but it is very aesthetically pleasing to the eye. I heard that they presented the East German helmet design to Hitler in '44 and he just said no, it looks stupid, Nazis had some great style you have to give them that.
jamiemcf1
There are some Splinter camo BDUs out there . The re-enactment stuff is so expensive lol
Harbard I know, I've seen some repro Luftwaffe smock type jackets that LW troops wore for okay prices in splinter. And I've seen some west German splinter descendant BDU like garments. Are they being wore by Kiev or Eastern forces?
Harbard Of course its a great camouflage, it's German!
Hey, thanks very much for taking the time to share this sort of thing - camo's great but only in the correct context, and I don't think I've seen anybody go to the trouble to actually gear it up and provide a video so you can SEE for yourself whether it works. Question for you - do you have a favorite source or two for surplus or good repro historical camo? I find some of the more common / more recent stuff like German Flecktarn or Swiss Alpenflage, but that's about it. Thanks again for sharing your work!
+Joe Jacoby Sportsmansguide, Majorsurplus.com, keepshooting.com, those are the three I frequent the most.
"Can You Spot the Dot?!"
I didn't expect this to be good...not bad. Thanks for sharing.
+john wayne Thanks for watching.
Excellent video!!!!!!!!! Great historical tool. Funny the advanced look of the uniform makes the rifle look out of place.
I have a request. Could you do WWI uniforms? I.e effectiveness of the Khaki or horizon blue over feldgrau? Anyway thanks for doing such good historical work.
Good stuff as always, where'd you get this from?
Beautiful German uniform, you are to be congratulated!
I'm blown away by how effective that camouflage is. It seems to compare favorably with any of the modern woodland camouflages.
The Social Regressive Germans have also been pioneers of camouflage development.
I use this pattern in WW2 reenacting, the Gi's walk right past me Everytime.
Hi Brent, great Video as usually.
Just one information about history you might like to know.
That "Erbsentarn" Pattern was... lets say... the Grandfather of today's german Flecktarn - which is pretty obvious to see. I remember the day - I think it was in 1989 - when the German Ministry of Defence showed the new Uniforms to the public on TV for the first time. I called a friend of mine and said... "watch out, the SS is back...!"
But what ist not very well know, that the world wide famous German Designer Wolfgang Joop was responsible for the Cut of the Fflecktarn-Uniforms.
So you could say... all German soldiers wear "Designer-Clothes"... HiHiHi..
Greetings from Germany
Chris
Thanks for the input brother.
As a WWII reenactor who does Russian and occasionally partisan, DOT44 has killed me more than any of the other German patterns. If the DOT wearer is not moving he often becomes invisible, even if standing in the open against a suitable background. On the other side, Soviet WWII leaf pattern can be just a deadly as many of my German opponents have discovered.
What websites can I go too to buy the tunic and trousers with Dot 44? I’ve been trying to find some without the insignias and it’s been quite hard.
Thanks for taking the time to do all that ..I was only able to "Wheres Waldo" you a few times...
Very interesting. One notices that the camouflage works best in the shaded areas. Great uniform and presentation.
+Timotheus157 Thanks
Wow nice uniform, you should do one with the Stalhelm and Helmet cover.
Great idea! I like your Chanel
+TheDark MorcarProject Thanks brother.
Can you mark each scenario in your videos so we can tell you how long it took us on each frame to find you, or if we did at all?
Is it still historically accurate though that jackboots were still used along with the camo uniform or is it supposed to be the low boots with gaiters?
Thanks for the info
that 10:00 position was just unbelievable
one of the best camo's..
hey brent, uniform looks great and so does the place, got any good fishing spots out there ? i may be maken a trip up to tawakoni or fork here pretty soon to do some fishing
Kerry Ward No sir, no fishing areas where i am.
oh well, id still come hang out with ya ! your creek sure runs dry pretty fast.
How does this work at night? I ask because OCP is super bright once white light comes into play.
what shirt do u put under the dot camo tunic itself??
Great video. What kind of boots are those/where did you get them??
theunwitness Those are actually Russian Jack boots. I picked them up from Trident military some years ago.
Sir
A very interesting couple camo patterns have popped out of our friends in Ukraine.
I think you should check out P1G-TAC and their "Zhaba/Jaba" camouflages. They have a bright green camo for heavily foliated environments and a yellow/tan camo for prairie and arid environments. Very interesting stuff and made in excellently cut, modern uniforms.
P.S.
Great videos as always.
kadrendo Thanks brother I'll check it out.
Can collar tabs go on the dot44 tunic?
Probably would have been more accurate to have a Sturmgewehr or even a G43. I noticed that the canteen lid reflects quite a bit of light. The SS even had a mask with that camo to cover the face. This is quite an interesting Camouflage. I would like to see how well the reversible Oak B pattern works.
Awsome video as always. I have a question though: Is the german WWII Dot Camouflage you're wearing a reproduction or is it an actual uniform used by the germans? If yes, how did you find something this rare?
Wolfram W Its repro, originals are unbelievably expensive. The only thing original from WWII that I have in this video is my rifle.
+Brent0331 Wow! I had no idea the rifle wasn't a reproduction nice
Hi Brent, what are those sounds in the background? are the rattlesnakes?
Cicadas. Loud annoying bugs in here in Texas during the summer time.
Did German soldiers wearing the 44 Dot tunic always always have the Sleeve eagle?
I spotted you immediately about half the time. But it was mostly either the shapes of your gear or bad positioning. Though one I spotted your boots.
I'm a fan now of the 44 dot!
What unit are you trying to represent here. Because I know the 12th SS mainly used this camo but you don't seem to have any insignia on your tunic. I know the dot 44 tunic doesn't usually get much insignia but they sometimes wore the bolts and almost always the eagle on their sleeve
+Luca Arnoult I'm not representing any particular unit. This is just a generic test of the pattern.
the uniform seems to change color with the surroundings. 4:15 the top part actually looks like the same color as the tree, and at 8:12 it looks green.
Where did you pick up a set of this stuff man? Awesome vid as always
Jacob Mcdonald The uniform I picked up from Sportsmansguide. The gear I picked up from different places like IMA and some re-enactor friends of mine.
***** What is IMA?
Air Handler www.ima-usa.com/
Several companies make it now.I have pants and jacket from at the front.
Yes, the US Forces in Europe made a colourful target, with their khaki uniforms, & coloured arm patches.
I'm from California, and when I spent time in Oklahoma and then Arkansas at night, I was amazed at the racket those bugs can make. We don't have those bugs where I'm from, at least my part of CA.
(Guess we can't have too many weapons either here in CA...)
I watched another video about SS camo and man I wouldn't want to have been walking through a late WWII forest...seems like it largely would've been a crap shoot if you got hit or not since it seems like you can't see the camo'd enemy beforehand very well. Definitely wouldn't have wanted to get shot let alone died in those final days.
Impressive. You had me guessin'.
Good Impression Brent, I know you're probably not a reenactor of this period, but low boots with gaiters would have been a bit more true to the time. Like I say, I know this is just an effectiveness video and you're not fully kitted out in period correct gear. Good stuff though. Have you seen the post war Austrian dot camo? I saw some effectiveness pics and damn it works well. I'm surprised it isn't as common in new clothing formats.
jamiemcf1 I have seen the Austrian camo, I like it too. I haven't been able to pick up any though. I've got my eyes out for it.
Wow! It was only when he started walking that I saw him!
pea dot is the best camo Ive ever used and cant see myself ever using anything else.
Wtf, That stuff is better than Multicam!
At distance the small details totally vanish (as with any other intricate pattern). I think the most effective camo is the modern German "Fleckentarn B" that uses larger areas and higher contrast.
+1. I think that's why the Russian Amoeba patterns work so well for how simple they are.
I think it took many decades for camo designers to realise this.
Testing Auscam (DPCU) in the 1990's, it was discovered after much investment that it really didn't work that much better than the jungle greens the Australian Army already had (but wanted to replace), especially after a day or so out on manoeuvres.
The second version "Midpoint DPCU" has the same component shapes, just spread out a bit more to make them more contrasting to the base colour and it apparently works much better.
That fly at 7:00. Hate that noise in my ear.
Much better than the modern Flecktarn
Where are you finding these paterns ?? I mean, full set
TheSasudomi Different places offer WWII reproduction uniforms. They're all expensive as hell though, even the cheaper ones made in china will cost you 100+ bucks.
***** Wow,out of my reach.Thanks for responding

Have you considered trying German Splinter camo, just for fun? It's not too hard to come by. It is also from WWII era.
We waiting to find a jacket at a good price.
love your video, i have a dot 44 shirt and ill get a hat because i reenact
Thanks
Very effective pattern. If prone it would be near perfect.
Any videos on the British patterns?
+Viking4freedom Not WWII era, but I have DPM, DPM desert, and MTP posted. I also have the Rhodesian pattern posted that is similar to the British brush stroke patterns.
***** Yes just found those videos, very nice job on camouflage brother.
Thanks
This could use a HD upgrade. Love hunting for ya!
6:33 you can see a snake move at the end of the right fork of the trail by the fallen log.
I want to get this uniform but with a STG44
Wo ist Walter?
Where do you get the 44 dot from?
Depending on the quality of the reproduction you want will depend on the price. Atthefront.com, Ebay, Sportsmansguide, etc.
Alright thanks
can you do more ww2 vids like this , i like the ww2 scene
+Darren Daly I may do some in the future. WWII is very expensive though, even reproduction gear.
Brent0331 I got a dot 44 tunic from mil tec for 44 bucks it was a great find on eBay I was looking and most of them were like 54
Many of those older German patterns are very effective the Russian army is even using some modified German designs albeit on a limited basis. I even looked into some of the repro stuff myself but the price stopped me. BTW you have a ridiculous selection of camo and weapons. Keep it up
Chris Jackson Thanks brother.
this works well
A early version/kind of Multicam 😄
That forest isn't that bad as a stand in for the European theatre, obviously more sunny, but a lot of the foliage looks to be similar to lightly wooded areas of west Europe, though perhaps not closer to the Black Forest part of Germany.

It is the predecessor of the actual German Flecktarn and it least as effectice. I like the German BW gear because you can buy it at reasonable prices and it is very, very durable. Don't get cheated with bad chinese copies of it. However, some copies are not that bad either.
