    With a complete clash of cultures and combat styles, the Vietcong and the German Waffen SS had almost polar-opposite approaches to warfare. Therefore, it begs the question that, in a hypothetical battle, which of these two forces would come out tops?

      Japanese soldiers also joined them. After WW2 ended, there were many Japanese soldiers left in Southeast Asia, including in Indochina. They had a choice between prioritizing anticommunism and joining the West against the Viet Minh (some Japanese soldiers were briefly used to fight against them before the French fully moved back in) or prioritizing pan-Asianism and joining the Viet Minh against the French. It’s thought that the Japanese who joined the Viet Minh may have helped them to become so good at guerrilla warfare.

    You have also remember and put into consideration that they wouldn’t be able to hide within the local population. Germans officers/leaders especially in the SS had the ‘you kill Germans, we kill a village’ approach. This would eliminate a lot of that confusion in urban/ village environments.

      Yeah it was about to say the same. Russian AKs existed but the majority were Chinese clones. The VC was also not nearly as under-equipped or untrained as people think. China not only sent modern weapons and supplied the Vietnamese well using supply lines like the HCM Trail but they also sent experienced advisors who cut their teeth fighting in the Chinese Civil War and Korea, the notion that the VC were under trained or unfamiliar with their kit may have been true early in the war, but certainly not by the end of it. Using this assumption in the matchup is like comparing Naruto and Luffy... if Naruto was from season 1 only and Luffy is current.

    This was actually presented on that show "World's Deadliest Warrior" where they took different fighters from different periods and places and had them fight each other. The Waffen SS was pitted against the Viet Cong and likewise they claimed the Waffen SS would win. In regards to hand to hand fighting it seems the Germans placed less emphasis on it than the Allied forces limiting their fighting to bayonets and their spades and maybe something else. The Waffen SS might have had some other fighting moves taught to them that weren't taught to the rest of the German military. As for Vietnam they do have a few native martial arts like their neighbors do, so it is possible they may have learned some fighting techniques. This is all speculation on my part.

They’d literally need to kill the entire country of tens of millions with extended supply lines and this time without land based logistics like they had in WW2. Combine that with the lack of knowledge of jungle fighting, no helicopters to quickly get in and out of the jungle to fight the VC, and assuming no cooperation with the South Vietnamese government if they ignore ROEs means they would probably lose

    One of the goofiest commando raids I heard of, Operation: Stormtroopers.
    During the Korean War, a special forces officer named Lt. Colonel J.D. Vanderpool was in Seoul when he happened upon a depot full of all the gear needed to cloth a Waffen SS unit, including weapons. This officer had a novel idea. He went to his buddy, Captain George Lamm, who was preparing a jump behind enemy lines and convinced him to dress his men from head to toe as Waffen SS grenadiers.
    Two weeks later they jumped near Haeju, North Korea. Fourteen Americans dressed as SS grenadiers. For two days they caused confusion, grabbing twelve confused North Koreans as prisoners. They got out via swift boats without a single casualty over their two-day mission.
    According to author Ed Evanhoe, the Soviet ambassador handed a mystified West German ambassador a formal complaint, charging German troops were operating in Korea. There was no word on the German ambassadors response.

    I guess you could say that this matchup actually happened, After the war the French Foreign Legion was basically a largely re-branded German Army. The French government do not like to talk about the fact that they were very happy to take these highly trained battle harden solders and send them out to re-claim the colonies not just in Indochina but all over the world. Plus you also need to know that under the Vichy Government France and the Legion had mixed loyalties and many secrets. Also right after the war they were using the Japanese army to "Police" Indochina until they could re-establish a military in the region, so the influx of trained Germans made this much easier and faster. For the ex-German Soldier the Legion gave these men a new name and a clean history as long as you did your time any war crimes were basically swept under the rug and your past was gone and now your were whatever Nom de Guerre said you were, so Hans and Otto became Rene and Jacques. After every world conflict there are men from both sides that for one reason or another can't go home, don't want to go home or just need to disappear, the Legion offers them a new home, a new ID and a new citizenship, IF YOU DO THE TIME that you signed up to do.

    • @MarioKaiba
      @MarioKaiba 8 месяцев назад +12

      People seem to forget that those who actually choose to fight for the French Foreign Legion have criminal histories. The FFL's policy of "You fight for use, you get a clean slate and French Citizenship" would definitely draw in ex-Nazis who weren't too proud and didn't want to be punished for war crimes.

      The Waffen SS would have unleashed the renegade Dirlewinger and Kaminski brigades to terrorize the local populations, if not outright "pacify" the area by killing all the residents. Then use the mechanized elements to fight in the north when both the VC and the NVA came out into the open in the Tet offensive and probably get destroyed. I think the VC and the NVA would still have won but casualties would have been much, much higher.

  • @Castor586
    @Castor586 8 месяцев назад

    Let's not forget that the SS would have had access to flamethrowers and a variety of armored vehicles. If an opponent was in the jungle, then the SS would have had no issues with attempting to remove the jungle, which would have drawn the VC into multiple reverse ambush scenarios where the SS would have had the upper hand for a time
    The real strength of the VC was their relatively unknown numbers, flexibility and time. The SS would have realized the financial burden of clearing the forests vs the military gains weren't beneficial to victory, so they'd try more conventional methods of patrolling forested regions. At such a time the VC would again utilize ambush tactics, though I'm sure the SS would have flamethrowers at their disposal which would restrict the effective use of the underground bunkers used by the VC.
    All in all, the numbers would prevail depending on how many warriors the VC could call upon

They completely skim over the fact that they are trying to approach this with the US RoE mindset instead of how the germans would have historically acted during WW2. There are also tons of other bigger factors that they either clearly left out on purpose or just simply didn't want to bother with is that german commanders would have employed different tactics to deal with the issue, or completely redesigned and reinvent tactics to deal with the VC. You get Manstein in there with Rommel on designing new ways to deal with the VC then you would probably have a completely different outcome.
      Also take in the fact that the waffen SS would have zero hesitation to use nerv gas and other chemical warfare weaponry to flush out the tunnels and jungles. This is why you don't go into a video like this while keeping a US RoE mindset, because it's not how it will go down.

    Given the atrocities the Waffen SS was trained and used to do, I doubt that this strategy of guerillia would have worked. A word of Mao said: "The guerrilla must move amongst the people as a fish swims in the sea." The frightning thing is that the Waffen SS would most likely have tried to dry the sea to take out the fish. Waffen SS vs. Vietcong would have been an entire different conflict with much more loss of civilian life. And german equipment in the sixties would have been more advanced than in the forties. Seriously, after a few failures they'd just set everything on fire or resort to other tactics to force the Vietcong out of the jungle. Unlike the US, they weren't bound by the Geneva Convention. And they did see anyone not of the "Master Race" as human, Imperial Japan only got a pass because Hitler needed an ally to divide the USSR's attention. Throw in that they're fighting a force that has few qualms about wiping out entire villages in revenge, thus eliminating their ability to hide in the populace and the VC don't have much of a chance.

    I liked this video an the idea for the series. Any chance we will see these armies again vs different opponents?
    I'm waiting to see more of this series.

All that while the VC were able to hide in residential areas and jungles while slowly whittle down US forces and stall for time.

    It would all depend on where the war was being waged if its Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos i would say the VC because an insurrgency works its in home territory. However if its in north africa or europe the VC just would have ahrd time entrenching themselves within a local populace. VC worked through blending in to the local population kind of hard if the population doesnt speak the same language or have similar goals or culture.

    1: This pre supposes that Germany won WW2 and goes on to fight Vietnam. As such, the SS would not be equipped with MP-40s and KAR98s. They’d all be issued sturmgewehrs standard. There’d be a designated sniper who would have a KAR98 as well as an MG team, but the STG would be standard issue.
    2: the Spike TV show Deadliest Warrior already covered this topic/matchup and concluded an SS victory.

    @Simplehistory This actually happened (sort of) You should check out "The Devil's Guard" by George R. Elford. The book details how some Former SS soldiers ended up in the French Foreign Legion to fight the Vietcong for the French using the techniques they learned fighting the Russian gorillas during WW2 and is supposedly from the direct dictation of one of these men. While some claims that the book makes are debated, there are a lot of others that have solid, historical evidence and documentation to support them. (Also it's just an interesting read)

    vietcong side has terrain and nature advantage because most german tank is to heavy to move in Vietnam and the panzer 3 , panzer 4 , stug 3 and 38 (t) is the only choice also most vietcong are using auto gun , semi-auto gun so the win rate is increase for the vietcong side , but the catch is german is having firepower advantage due to their mg-42 and a massive army size
    Since the mp gun exist , there no chance for vietcong doing close quarter combat

    There were multiple Variants of the Panzerfaust, but i believe the 60m vairant was the most common, as portrayed by video games, sometimes you get the ocassional 30m version (Probably meant for Wolksarmee or something.)
    Also, because of the fact you forgot to mention the STG-44 and G-43 wich would have the priority of being issued to the SS (Because they are the elite) technically the Vietnameese would be better because of their Assault Rifles.

    It depends what the engagement field is as they were adapted to two very different methods of warfare. On a field of battle the Waffen will stomp, while in the jungle asymmetric warfare the VC are going to inflict a lot of casualties before the Waffen adapt.
    One thing I think will give the Waffen the long term edge that the Chinese, Americans and French were mever willing to do, was extermination. The VC relied heavily on popular support among the networks of villages and towns, for supplies and recruits and hiding. The Waffen would have NO qualms about systematically moving through section after section, wiping out everyone and everything. They'll burn down the whole jungle and genocide everyone.

    • @denzzlinga
      @denzzlinga 7 месяцев назад

      Exactly the same what i tought. The SS is no "gentlemen´s army" with the claim to be the good guys like the americans, they would just go full berserk and try to exterminate the enemy and leave nothing but burned land behind them to cut the supply of the Vietcong.
