    I think its interesting that the Marines were looking at this pattern in a tiger stripe variant as well. Apparently the ones who were assigned the test it actually found the tiger stripe variant to be more effective at camouflage. However, the Corps in all it's wisdom chose what it wanted.

    As a 0331 from 1st Battalion 7th Marines, my opinion is that the MarPat is good for fall and winter. The Canadian CadPad I think is more suited for the spring and summer. Good video killer. 0331 Accuracy by volume.

    I saw you pretty quickly in just about every scene. I was driving down some rural roads near Quantico a few years ago in late summer/early fall. The leaves were a much darker green then, with lots of light brown brush and tall grass and scrub along the side of the road. In the middle of the day, sunny sky etc and nobody on the road. Suddenly found myself staring at a squad of Marines crouched on an embankment, just off the side of the road, resting, not trying to hide. Damn. Did not see them until I was right next to them, and I'm very good at seeing stuff like that, even from farther away, even at night (PTSD + LSD + constant anxiety). That squad turned out to be part of a Platoon, which turned out to be part of a Company, broken up in groups along the road. Didn't see any of them until I got real close. Broad daylight, not even in the woods, just crouched in the tall grass with the woods behind them.

    I have a couple of surplus MARPAT woodland blouses, and fading greatly effects the color--the faded one seems to blend better than my 'less faded' one.
    One thing about picking Brent out in the videos: the video frame itself tends to direct the eye. Out in the field, there is so much more to take in, picking out a still, camouflaged man is much more difficult. I also picked him up most of the time. :)

      Unless you go into the reserves you don't have a choice. You will go in as an Infantry contract and then they will assign you an MOS once you get to SOI. I originally wanted to be an 11 and then they made me a 31 lol. I wouldn't have changed a thing though, being a 31 was the greatest experience a Marine could ask for. taking a (then) M240G into combat was pure greatness.

      It is brother. As an 0331 you'll shoot thousands upon thousands of rounds. Just think, every can of 7.62 is a 200 round can. :) As a 31 you shoot a M240, .50 cal, & Mk19. All superb weapon systems and a blast to shoot. 0311's primarily do room clearing, but... There is most certainly times you will clear a room as a 31. Keep in mind your machinegun sqaud will be attached to a rifle platoon, you will be right there with the 11s unless your in the attack in which your needed to set up in a support by fire. During the invasion I actually had to sling my M240G and clear rooms with my M9 with the team leader and ammo man on certain occasions.

    It would be interesting to see a another video of this camouflage with our coyote plate carrier and maybe even an assault pack. Because real world that's what we would have depending on what we're doing. I'm in 4th CEB now but I know when we did patrols when I was still at Lejune I was completely satisfied with MARPAT.

    Thanks for doing such a great video series. This footage along with 1000's of hours of other self-demonstation camouflage clothing products prove that the best concealment only happens when the testers hide inside/behind natural foliage from the environment. In all cases, the camo pattern clothing or suit (i.e. ghillie) plays a very small role in the true concealment. For every other second of video, when standing or walking, when MARPAT (or a 3D suit) alone is responsible for "concealment" it fails - the person is easily detected and targeted by an enemy, the silhouette is easy seen, the only difficulty might be targeting a specific part (like a hand) because MARPAT really only works to break up shapes within the body. The benefits of harnessing natural foliage as camo is the same reason every tester starts inside or behind it - because is dramatically scrambles and breaks up the silhouette, the shapes, the colors, etc. - whereas clothing, since it hugs the body, can do little but break up the internal shapes (a very small fraction of the overall concealment factors).

    • @AstanaxKnight
      @AstanaxKnight 2 года назад

      The RUclipsr Brandon F. demonstrated such a thing with the British Redcoats. Even with their striking red coats, a modern day visual showed concealment behind natural foliage was key.

    • @mickeyg7219
      @mickeyg7219 10 лет назад +4

      I think MARPAT is a little too brown-dominant, I believe it's intended to be better at blending in with dirt, mud, and tree trunks more than leaves. Green-dominant patterns like CADPAT and ATACS FG are better for lush forest.
      Colorado is mostly transitional environment, desert patterns work decently there, but Multicam will works like charm because it's specifically a transitional pattern.

    Woodland MARPAT and AOR2 (AKA NWU Type 3) are both derivatives of the four-color CADPAT TW camouflage. However the Woodland MARPAT has a horozontal trend, and uses almost the exact same color ways as the M81 Woodland Pattern, while the AOR 2 pattern has a vertical trend, and uses 2 shades of green (one dark, one light), black and a tan\white color. Without brown the pattern seems overall much lighter, making it more useful for dense vegetation, while MARPAT is more useful general woodland use. The colorways used in AOR 2 were actually initially rejected by the USMC when they were developing MARPAT as it was decided the inclusion of brown would be more useful to blend in with dead leaves, dirt and mud. AOR 2 is slated to replace M81 woodland in all aspects of Navy uniform, however it is most prominently worn with SEALS and SEABEAS

    Did you ever test Woodland Marpat in the fall/winnter season. When it first came out, what I liked about it is that it would do better in the winter than the 80s/90s woodland. I remember see pics of guys inn woodland in the winter woods and they stuck out as if they were wearing solid black. I thot the brown in the Marpat would mitigate that. I'd like to actually see it.

    I've often wondered if the best camo clothing would be something that utilized different patterns sown together. For instance, a digital, multicam, fleck, ASAT, woodland, mossy oak, realtree pattern sown together. To me, that seems a break up that would be hard to detect.

    funfact: MARPAT is effectively just a digitized version of Vietnam era tiger stripe camo. Don't settle for knockoff (tru-spec) versions, the genuine issue material is superior in every way and is noticeably more effective due to rich colors, correct pattern, uv treatment and light diffusing weave.

    MARPAT is sweet but eats too much light. Now if you sit at the base of those trees you might hardly need any cover to conceal your image. Thanks for the info. like the series on camo

    Brent0331 did you know that the USMC originally wanted to fully adopt CadPat? Canadian military said no tell them, so instead, the USMC and Canadian Military worked together and created Marpat while using the same template as CadPat. The USMC created 3 versions of Marpat.
    Marpat Woodland, Marpat Desert, and the largely unreleased Marpat Urban. Hyperstealth created the Marpat Arctic (different template)
    The reason the Marines didn't choose to release Marpat Urban is because Hyperstealth and the US military conducted objective camouflage studies. The results showed that Marpat Desert outperformed every other urban camouflage pattern.

    @Brent0331, seriously great videos brother! I can't imagine how much time and energy it takes to make these. I'm sure you have a life other than these videos, so, again, I want to thank you for your time. Have a question though, what is the difference between Digital Woodland, MARPAT, and AOR2? Why is AOR2 and restricted patern? Thanks in advance!

    CADPAT still reigns supreme. When hiding in thick green brush, it’s the thickness of the brush, not the camo that’s hiding him.

    idea behind this pattern is that soldier could always stick few leafy branches on the gear and blend in perfectly in overly green enviroment like this. Problem is late autumn and winter when forest became 95% brown and everything moving in a lot more exposed to naked eye and this is where this pattern outperform everything else.

    My favourite camouflage is Serbian m10 camo (I believed it’s called m10 I’m not to sure though). It looks similar to marpat but the greens a bit brighter and I think it looks better than. Some of Chinese camouflage also looks good as well.

    Is that REAL MARPAT? (Can't tell due to the shading in the Video.) Hint: Best way to tell is the Marine Corps Tag inside the Collar, and the Cammo EGA on the fabric.

      I have not, I wont be doing that pattern. Its a commercial copy of MARPAT, I literally have crap loads of USMC utilities laying around the house from my years of service so I'm not going to spend money to buy a whole set of that. I'm sure it would preform just the same as MARPAT.

    Would you consider testing some of the hunting camo that's on the market like ASAT, M2D, KRYPTEK and such. I'm curious if they work well against human eyes in different settings or if they stick out like a sore thumb.

    • @Brent0331
      @Brent0331  10 лет назад

      I did do one hunting pattern already, I may do Mossy Oak Obsession sometime this spring. It all depends if I get the free time to go out there and film it though, I’m really busy with work right now. As for the patterns you named off, most likely not. Especially Kryptek, it just cost way too much for my liking.

    I'd love to see a video of the NWU Type III... Seems like a cross between MARPAT and CADPAT.... less Brown than MARPAT and less Green than CADPAT... It's kinda hard to get ahold of though... Last time I checked you can't just go into the Navy exchange and buy it... It's a command issued item.

      +USN~CPO It would be interesting to see. I'll never understand why they chose to flip the pattern so that it's vertical....very counter-productive. If they had kept it horizontal then it could have been far better.

    It might be more effective to incorporate ambient foliage into a cape made of netting. ... Looking at this footage, I can really see how getting some fake foliage from Garden Ridge or Hobby Lobby and stitching it onto some camo netting or some nylon hammock or fishing netting (using some monofilament or outdoor upholstery thread) would be a worthwhile adjunct and could also be used to conceal my main ruck if I need to ditch it, temporarily, at some "rally point" or other way-point.
