    Hey Guys, I know you produced this video 2 years ago, but I've just been setting up my own home studio and thanks to the Kosmic videos I've now got an awesome set up. What I've particulary appreciated as I've run through your home studio videos multiple times, is the honesty and directness of Leonard's? reviews and recommendations of products. It's all too common for music stores to give a 'hey, we stock this, it's awesome at everything' opinion on items - you guys are particularly good at calling out the pros/cons of each product and even recommending cheaper options to people when they may be more appropriate. Just wanted to give you credit as youtube is generally way too full of hate and negative opinions, sometimes it's nice to be good to people who deserve credit and clearly put a LOT of effort into being a music store.

    Now that was the best advice I've heard any one give about setting up a home studio yet. Took me 3 years to figure it out. Spent so much money buying things I didn't even need from listening to people's opinions on what I should have instead of what I needed. Thank you Leonard for clearing that up for producers just getting started.

    This is absolutely awesome ! Why does it have so few viewers? I am starting my own home studio as soon as I can afford an iMac and nobody ever told me what I actually needed for a basic home setup in the same level of details as you guys do. You guys definitely got yourselves a new subscriber and I am going to recommend you to everyone of my musicians friends. Thanks a lot !

  • @DavidHager1

    How's my setup? So far I have:
    a computer
    a mouse
    a keyboard
    socks because my feet get cold easily when I'm sitting down
    a chair
    dreams
    I'm considering getting some open back headphones, but I feel like my weakest link right now is the socks. They're kinda worn. Also my dreams have been crushed, so I'm gonna have to replace those sometime soon.

    • @jan27h
      @jan27h 8 лет назад +2

      +David Hager - Waitwutmyname Do you have any socks to recommend? I'm on a tight budget so I'm looking at the price from 5-12€ (maybe could go to 15€ even, if those would make a BIG difference). Thanks!

    • @DavidHager1
      @DavidHager1 8 лет назад +2

      ja hu The thicker you go the more expensive, so go for what ever is the most you can afford, just make sure you're not paying for the socks name and not the quality.

    Good to see some Australian recording and studio videos, you're extremely informative and easy to listen to! I wouldn't mind seeing a video about how to route audio through external processors such as outboard compressors or limiters for mastering purposes or what-have-you (like you mentioned towards the end of the video). Am having some trouble getting my head around how to wire everything up and would like to know a bit more before I go and invest in expensive rack gear...

    I pieced together my home set up for less than a grand. True I don't have the FULL WAVES Diamond bundle or some of the other "fancy" stuff, but I got the M-Audio Axiom61 MIDI Keyboard ($100 craigslist), M-Audio BX8a ($200 craigslist), M-Audio Fast Track Audio Interface with Pro Tools Software ($80 craigslist), and I already had a nice DELL XPS Dual Core laptop with 2 GB RAM ($600 value now) which is good enough to start. All my equipment works. You just have to be creative. Much Respect! Theo

    That's my set-up too...and it works well for me. I actually think the studio is made with the software. I went from Cakewalk-based studios to Ableton and heard a ton of difference! It sounds better recording str8 into AL8 without VST's than I did using Cakewalk with VST's.

    Just a small obsevation about your comment (which I agree): in my opinion you can do great things with FL Studio, meaning production, mixing and mastering for ALL kind of music, it's not an industry standard but you can deffinitely get a professional sound out of it. The work flow is very simple, and stock plugins' algorithm might differ from other DAWs, but if you know what you are doing, it is absolutely reliable.

    Two 1/4" TRS to XLR cables will also let you plug your hsm50's to any 1/4 inch balanced out. You don't need to buy a different interface, just the two TRS to XLR cables. Make sure you get the right ends on the XLR side (the come in either male or female and I think you need the male ends)

    Great vids. I love them all. Thank you for spending your time helping others. I am just barely above the beginner level and still have a lot to learn. I am just now able to afford equipment and software. I spent over $3000 in the last year purchasing a contoller, a mac book pro, a Maschine MK2 and some other things. I still need good studio monitors (currently using Klipsch THX computer speakers with a sub), an audio interface and I am deciding whether I should purchase a DAW like Logic Pro X.

    to all those who say theyre dreams wont be achieved, trust me if you work hard and dedicate time, you can buy any piece of gear you want. Ive always wanted to do home studio production since like 2012 and last year is when i said "screw you" to everyone and told my parents "idgaf what you think about music or what you want, im buying this shit and thats it". worked two jobs and worked fuking hard, im in university full time and i bought 2 adam audio monitors, two stands, a vermona drm1 mkiii drum synthesizer, beatstep pro, korg ms-20mini with a kirg sq-1 sequencer, komplete 12, a power conditioner and a focusrite thunderbolt audio interface and this year im upgrading to an imac, buying a motu midi interface and ableton along with upgrading my cubase. It takes lots of work, but in the end the gear you buy can last for years and you have complete freedom to make music and know that the only thing standing between you and your music, is a screen and that is priceless.

    The digital world has also overcome the need for a physical mixer. Most engineers or people with a home studio can use the digital mixer that comes with most DAWS now. (pro tools, cubase, logic, reason...ect) so controlling levels are all on the computer screen within the software itself.

    That's a good question, but there's a rock solid answer: Headphones will create a massive stereo separation and if you ONLY mix with headphones, you're going to end up hearing things quite a bit different than over speakers. That's the big one. The next reason is that headphones will never represent the music as well as hearing it a room and letting sound strike your ears as it does in normal circumstances. No headphones can create the low end like awesome monitors (and studio sub-woofers) can.

  • @thecompletejake
    @thecompletejake 11 лет назад

    Those are your monitor outputs. Your interface is sending the mono mic signal to your computer via USB or Firewire (or thunderbolt, if you're a fancypants). Your computer will then send the audio back out through your interface to the L and R outputs using the panning you've have on the track in question.
