Such a sharply written account of those relationships that don't implode with force and suddenness, but rather degrade and slow down until they reach the end, a "destination". You look out the window and realize you're there; sooner or later, you have to get out. And it's from the perspective of the other person to boot, which is difficult to pull off convincingly. At the time this song (and band/album) was popping up, I was just getting into that "entering-college-age-getting-into-obscure-and-abrasive-indie-music" phase, so I was very resistant to liking bands like this, but this song turned me around.
+mywhychromosome By far, easily, my favorite Motion City song; always has been.
My cynical and pretentious self usually cringes at expressive and well worded comments but i really enjoyed reading this. Even your username is clever. I have had similar experiences. Hope all is well!
I still love obscure indie music as much as mainstream music. I guess I just don't have a bias in any capacity. In fact, I love a ton of genres, folkpunk, popunk, punk, emo, ska ect.
Oh. It kinda relates to me that maybe they didn't communicate. Or maybe just a failing relationship. Hes sad cause he was just trying to do the right thing, maybe they weren't meant to be together and they can both do better
29 and I've loved this song since it came out! It's a sense of nostalgia that I get it takes me back an just "holds me down" to where I can think and just feel the beat
my fav ex put this on my iPod in high school & I finally got to thank him years later after I kinda fucked everything up. I always think about him when I hear this. Not that he held me back from shit, it was just always a lot of shit I was dealing with personally and felt I couldn’t talk to anyone about but he always stayed no matter what. I’m happy he’s happy now💞
Love it like the first day I heard it back in time
This band is great. I wish they got the due they deserved more. So many of their songs are relatable, for folks in all kinds of situations.
Plus the drummer is insanely good
@@xTBCGxsomeone had to say it
"I love you- however..."
The impact of such a simple line is something that only select unlucky few can truly understand.
Tragically beautiful
Drums are sliding 🤙
This song has had an impact on my life. In more ways than one. I want to say the last minute of this song perfectly describes in music the sound of confusion and heartbreak.
How did it have an impact on you?
Still listening in 2020🎉🎉
Such an amazing song
Still will always love the Cursive reference best. ❤️
I love the ending of the song, very introspective, makes me close my eyes and reflex about my entire life lol
Still better than anything on air today.
I found a letter that said:
"I'm sorry that you were asleep when I wrote these words down,"
You'd think I'd ought to be used to that by now.
Save for a few of those late night episodes,
Missed opportunities, and "I Don't Cares,"
There's not a lot that I feel obliged to share or talk about.
I'll have my brother stop by this Saturday to pick up my things,
Just make sure you're not there.
This may sound bad, and don't take it the wrong way..
I love you, however,
You hold me down [x4]
You're the echoes of my everything,
You're the emptiness the whole world sings at night.
You're the laziness of afternoon,
You're the reason why I burst and why I bloom.
How will I break the news to you? [x2]
Cancel our dinner with Max and Coraline,
feed Jacky's gerbil and try to stay clean.
We'll talk it over after I've had some time alone to sort it out.
You hold me down [x4]
You're the echoes of my everything,
You're the emptiness the whole world sings at night.
You're the laziness of afternoon,
You're the reason why I burst and why I bloom.
You're the leaky sink of sentiment,
You're the failed attempts I never could forget.
You're the metaphors I can't create to comprehend this curse that I call love..
How will I break the news to you? [x5]
22 & still love you guys!
i'm in my late 40s and i love you
41 here.
29 for another two weeks, i had this on a burned cd on my way to the boys and girls club in junior high, it still hits just as heavy
i love this song so much

This band takes me back to high school so hard it’s not even funny
I discovered this band/song from playing Burnout 3 on PS2. My ommediate reaction was hate and disdain for mainstream radio, and those sentiments haven't assuaged since then.
How is it that the mediocre crap that is played as a break from commercials makes it on, but this band doesn't?!
Anyway. Maybe it's all for the better. Now I seek out music instead of tuning in to be fed what some bean counter says I should be listening to.
Sounds like his ex had a heroin problem, and he had enough of dealing with it because she wasn't the same person he fell in love with.
Sharp observation about that angle, it's kind of 'hidden' in the subtext (the lyricist doesn't beat you over the head with it at all). Small "correction", though: With a few exceptions, like the opening, the song's lyrics are all supposed to be from the letter the narrator found, left by the 'ex' that is leaving him...it's that kind of "I still love you, but everything's fucked" kind of leaving as opposed to a relationship just fizzling out. But the narrator/lyricist is the one being advised to "try and stay clean" by the lover...not the other way around
why do all of your comments use the adjective "sharp"? Sorry to bring it up so sharply.
Sharp observation of his repeated use of the word "sharp".
if by heroin you mean another person, then yeah.
