    A Dog Lover’s Introduction: Presa Canario
    The Perro de Presa Canario also known as Canary Dog is a large dog with a thick and muscular build. The breed name translated means Canarian Catch Dog.
    As early as the 16th century the Presa Canrio has been noted in documents of the Canary Island. It is believed they are the result of various mastiff and bulldog breeds, that were crossed with the indegenous Majorero Cattle dog.
    The breed was originally bred for holding cattle, defend livestock against wild dogs and other predators, and to protect the homes of their families. For centuries the dogs were bred without consideration of size, color or appearance. They were simply bred based on their ability to do the work. Fighting is also part of the breed’s history, the farmers would allow their dogs fight one another as a matter of pride and bragging rights. These were considered honor fights use to prove their dog’s superiority.
    Centuries of isolation, created a dog unique to the region but
    it wasn’t officially recognized as a breed until 1989, by the Real Sociedad Canina de Espana.
    The breed standard calls for, The Presa Canario is a moderately large, powerfully constructed dog with a harsh- textured, flat coat. The head is massive and cuboid. Ears are set just above the line of the eye and may be cropped, naturally pendent or rose. The body of the Presa Canario is slightly longer than its height at the withers, with a broad, deep chest, but females may be slightly longer and possess somewhat less rib spring than the males. Skin is thick and elastic. The distance from the withers to the elbow is roughly equal to the distance from the elbow to the ground. The tail is very thick at the base, and tapers to a point. The tail is moderately high and reaches to the hock. The overall impression is that of an imposing, solid guard dog.
    Males stand 23-26 inches at the withers, with females standing 22-25 inches. Minimum weight for males is 100 pounds and 85 pounds for females. The acceptable colors for Presa are any shade of fawn, black, and brindle in any combination of these colors. The face must have a black or dark brown mask that does not extend over the eyes with oath without a white blaze or patch on the head.
    By nature the Presa Canario is an affectionate, confident, and powerful guardian breed. This combination, means the breed is not for everyone. They are affectionate which means human contact is necessary for a balance and social Presa. The breed is confident which mean they don’t back down from challenges and can be dominant over perceived weakness. They are powerful which could mean serious liability if your Presa engages in an attack or an animal or human. They are a guardian breed and therefore should be weary of strangers, and will not hesitate to defend what they considered to be in their domain.
    A responsible owner will socialize and obedience train his Presa from an early age. He will also provide ample physical exercise and consistent rules and regulations.
    The presa is a working breed and will need considerable exercise and a home with a yard is recommended.
    The breed bonds strongly with family members but should never be left alone, unsupervised with small children.
    The temperament of every dog should be considered on an individual basis, it is wise to be aware of the documented history of aggression displayed by some dogs of the breed.
    The breed has a life expectancy of 9-11 years.
    Health problems common in the Presa Canario include orthopedic conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, osteochondritis dissecans and panosteitis, as well as eye problems, hypothyroidism, demodectic mange, epilepsy and cryptorchidism. Bloat is also common, as well as ligament tears.
    If you decide to take on the challenges of owning this breed be prepared, for the responsibility of of such a powerful breed. The presa is a fanatastic working and guard dog. Raised properly they should be calm, attenttive, obedient and docile with the family. The breed will be an amazing addition for the right family.

    This is a very smart breed, but they definitely need a calm and assertive leader. They respond great when the leader keeps a calm energy. My Presa is 5 months old and she has been learning very quickly, it's impressed me how well behaved she is.

    My favorite breed of all time. I had a red fawn male that was north of 130# and he was easily both the best dog I've owned or met. He was naturally protective, extremely intelligent and very friendly and outgoing with any people, cats, etc that weren't threats.
    The male red fawn that's running around in this video looks exactly like my guy Magnus. Such a big, goofy, loving dog. I miss him every day.

    The Presa Canario is pretty intimidating dog breed. It is a dog breed I would not consider for myself but I do appreciate the narrator's in depth knowledge ,warnings and find it interesting to listen to him about this breed.

    My uncle had one but had to send him back to the breeder because he didn't have the chops to be the proper leader that the dog needed. He was the most unfuckwithable dog I've ever seen. He liked me but not many other men and his head was the size of a basketball so you really didn't want his full biteforce chomping down on you. I would caution anyone considering this breed to really audit yourself and ask "do I actually have the leadership capabilities to handle this dog or do I just like the idea of this dog?" Because I'll go out on a limb and say that 95% of people don't. I think there should be a mandatory agreement to enroll in obedience with these dogs with a trainer who has experience with powerful breeds.

    • @vegasgirl3538
      @vegasgirl3538 6 лет назад +5

      We have one and they're definitely not for the faint of heart. Ours tolerates strangers if we tell him to but never warms up to anyone outside his family, it's just not his nature.

    • @anthonyhaines496
      @anthonyhaines496 6 лет назад +5

      VegasGirl35 yeah people dont realize they're purpose bred guard dogs and relatively rare so that instinct hasn't been bred down at all. They're meant to be weary of strangers so you'll probably never train them out of that.

    • @5150defiant
      @5150defiant 5 лет назад +1

      Is this breed good with other dog's in his pack, I know they can be dog aggressive especially with strange dogs. But in wondering with proper socialization an getting both the dogs at the same time can they be trained too be acceptant of other dog's or pets in there family. Any advice would be very much appreciated.

    • @gniteeveryone9134
      @gniteeveryone9134 5 лет назад +1

      @@5150defiant Only if the other dog can put up with the Presa's rough Nature. my golden cant put up with one or keep up. but with the borbell rott mix. she doesnt chellenge that dog. she knows that dog is equal to her. Presa's can be real tolerant of other animals (in the house hold) if soilzaed young. but at 5 months they become distrusting of strangers.

    • @5150defiant
      @5150defiant 5 лет назад +1

      @@gniteeveryone9134 Cool thxs for the advice, Im no novice when it comes too dog's. But this dog Is a handful, An I have a 9 yr old son an He wants a boerboel an I want a presa. So I wanted too make sure before getting them both that if they we're raised together from lil pups that there would be no issues. I'm quite confident it can be done with some strong leadership time an alot of obedience an socialization I'm sure there won't be any problems, again thxs for taking the time too reply merry Christmas an God bless 😉.

    I own a Presa. She is a great dog. Very protective of her house. Strong willed and intelligent. She will come right up to a stranger looking like she wants to tear them up. But she stops about 1 ft short. One she sniffs and we say it’s ok she will treat them like family. Very aggressive looking and will scare anyone with any fear of dogs. But loving to family members and the rest of the “pack.” Needs an “alpha” owner or they will become the alpha.

    Met one on a beach with it's family before I knew what the breed was. Intact brindle male, cropped. Wasn't as heavy in the front end, less lip, and a little more athletic build than the ones in this video. not sure what's more crrect or maybe he was just younger, but it had the most commanding presence of any dog I've ever experienced. Played with it's 70# amstaff buddy like an adult with a puppy.

    Just like any other dog, you gotta raise it right. My friend has one and he's just a big, goofy, whiney, lovable dog that wants to play and be petted, HOWEVER, by nature, he will stand his ground if needed, I mean the dog fears NOTHING. Only time he ever whines or cries is when his owner has to leave him home.

    The Rottweiler is not a fighting dog.never has been it is what it is a great guard dog.the psi of a presa is a lot more than that of a
    rottie over 500 lbs.the presa can be very dog aggressive and they don't like strangers.they are awesome guards as well and can be over protective.this is a breed with immense power which needs channelling in the correct manner.
    not a breed I would advice to own unless you are serious about what you are taking on.

    FYI, my Presa is my heart. She is my love, my life, my everything. That being said, I warn everybody about this breed. She is MY dog, she is affectionate with our family, she is very well socialized, very well exercised and trained. Know this, if you don’t have experience with a strong breed, this dog is NOT for you. My girl, she is an embassador for this breed, but not all breeders are reputable. If y’all u want a dog that is strong, beautiful, dominant, protective...then go for it... but know this, if you slack, if you have a weak day, if you drop the ball... they will pick it up, they will take over. They are so smart, they can problem solve, and if you u aren’t a natural born leader... welll... get a lab... this dog is absolutely not for you...

      Not true i am first time dog owner own a presa canario. This breed is not for evreyone they need a firm owner. I adopted mine presa he is 4 years old but great dog for the family it is a werry docile breed. It also needs a job to do because it's a working breed he is also highly obiedience trained. I love my dog allot i would not want to own any different breed then this they are reall good family dogs.

      Kavz King Im also a well-informed first time dog owner and I always get complimented on our presa about how well-behaved, calm and amazing gentle temperament he has. Everyone thought I was crazy getting this breed as a 1st time dog owner but I would not have chosen any other breed.

      As a puppy mine kept trying to put us paws on them and tear them off plus their litter mates often try to RIP them on one another it's a working breed it doesn't harm them at all

    Real presas are much heavier than 1 hundred pounds, i never seen a hunded lb presa, if so it would be the size of a dogo.
