Thank you, this was what I needed to see. These are things I generally knew, but had not watched in application with your clear instruction. - rob in south dakota
Awesome technique. The day I watched your video and become your fan. You tell everything in detail wth utmost easyness. Thanks a lot . I would love to practice oil painting like you .god bless ❤️❤️
Thank you Marion for showing this technique for sunflowers. As you say it looks lovely as it is. I am interested to see how you glaze with the colours. Do you leave the under painting to dry before you apply glazes? I am often confused between applying paint in the usual way and glazing. It's difficult for me to grasp the art of glazing. Hugs xxxxxxx
How am I just now seeing this? This is absolutely brilliant! I’m going to see if I can find the reference photo. I think I must be nuts, but I really want to try this! Marion, it’s just beautiful. Seriously, beautiful.
@@MazArtStudio I thought I had replied, but I guess I didn’t. Oh man…I’m getting old! 😜 I couldn’t find that particular photo for purchase, but I did find another I’m going to try. You continue to show me doors that I can open. Doors I didn’t even know existed! Thank you for all you do. This art journey is so exciting and has quite literally saved me. 🌹
This technique intrigued me. For the first time, your video was self explanatory. Thank you very much for your tips. Do you paint the actual colors after the canvas dries? How many days does underpainting dry? thank you.
Absolutely beautiful and fascinating! I've never seen quite this technique. I think I'll try it -after I've finished my drawing class. Thanks for sharing this style with us.
Can I use mona lisa odorless mineral spirits? I do have liquin. I don't know why my instructor (from years ago) had me buy odorless mineral spirits and liquin if they are similar. Now here, you're demonstrating the use of clear medium. I'm new in oil painting. Be kind haha
you cant erase the same unless you are super quick or work in small sections - but you can underpaint in acrylic you just have to work around the drying time
@@MazArtStudio yes I use the monochrome method in acrylics with a hue that will work well with what I am painting. I’ll just use my method. Would love to learn to use and work with oils. I’m looking at your programs. I may consider one in the near future. Thank you for sharing your secrets and techniques with us. You are awesome 👏 I can’t wait to learn from you on oils.
yes it would work, I just don't like it at all. Odourless mineral spirit would also work, but again I don't like the smell or toxicity of it. It is persona preference.
I just purchased my first set of oil paints and I bought turpenoid for the medium...is turpenoid good to use for oils??? I usually work in acrylics but really want to try oils...I could watch you paint all day. You're such an inspiration..
DJH I’ve never used turpenoid and wouldn’t be able to advise. Although I googled it and here’s what I found. Reviews of Turpenoid Natural as a brush cleaner have been outstanding. It cleans even dried brushes. Although it can be used as a medium for mixing with your oil paints most reviewers of the product recommend against it because the paintings take a very long time to dry and you must be careful not to use very much medium. So use it as a cleaning agent rather than a medium is the advice. You can use walnut oil or linseed oil (refined) for a medium. I use a brand called zest it. If you click my kit.com link you’ll see what I use and have a description for things. But feel feee to use turpenoid but do a bit of research on google first. 😁. Good luck you’ll love Oils.
Candy Williams I’ve just bought some to play with. I’m fairly sure it can. However you’d need to use the modified linseed oil suitable for water soluble paint.
This is a beautiful technique and dosen't look real hard to do, yay! The only medium I own is linseed oil though, would that work? I wish this could be done with acrylics also lol. Thank you much Marion 😊👍
it is beautiful painting, i am absolutely beginner in oil painting. i have one question. i know the primer / gesso can stop the canvas being too dry. but i also learn that acrylic can do the same. what is your opinions about this 3 different kind of things, which is best. Thanks a lot.
by the way, i am now learning acrylic painting, after i watched your white rose tutorial i plan to do oil painting soon. hope you have more tutorial in real time.
MazArtStudio I tried the SAA and they are out...I'll definitely keep trying. I think I'm going to order 2 sets, one for light colors and one for dark...
MazArtStudio I just went to your website and I created an account...for some reason it's telling me my email or password is incorrect and it won't let me go any further...I'm from the US so does that make a difference??? I've done it twice and it keeps saying the same thing...
Oils are out of the question for me (because of my health ). Can I do an underpainting in acrylics using the white instead of wiping out? I know the oils will come out better but will this method be an advantage because of the solid drawing underneath?. You are a very good artist and your explanations are very clear. Thanks very much
You can do it with acrylic but instead of covering the entire canvas and wiping out - just build up the dark layers slowing and leave the white of the canvas (you don't need white). if you build up slower it can be done with acrylics too.
Ma'am, is it a complete painting or in the second stage you will again paint over it as you said it's an underpainting? I'm sorry but I'm a bit confused, and plz guide me on what's the benefits of making underpainting first? Thanks again
Saadi it’s your choice. Many people love it like this sepia effect. I will be adding coloured glazes on the top. An underpainting makes the drawing stages easy (only one colour to worry about). It establishes the tonal values and all the hard work is done at this stage. We simply add colour glazes on top of this which I will do in later videos.
@ MazArtStudio Wow I finally get that ! Thank you so much for being so kind to us in sharing your knowledge. I was wondering why people did under paintings and I have read that this was a technique that the masters did , now I finally get why.
I do most of my paintings in this manner mostly because once I start adding color I screw it up. So I don't mind spending 10hrs or more to make it a finished painting

its a mahl stick and is used to support my hand during painting :-)

Please forgive my ignorance, I am a beginner, but please can someone
explain what is the purpose of painting an under-paint sketch in burnt
umber ?
Wonderful job! Do you Think I could do it in acrylics?
Giovanna Scotti you can underpaint in acrylic but not using the wipe out method as the paint would dry far too quickly to wipe out.
This is a beautiful technique and dosen't look real hard to do, yay! The only medium I own is linseed oil though, would that work? I wish this could be done with acrylics also lol. Thank you much Marion 😊👍
Michael Ann yep linseed would work. You can’t really do it with acrylic (not the wipe out method anyway).
