Learn how to sign good morning, good afternoon and goodnight. Keep in mind that your non-dominant hand (and arm) are used to show the horizon. Good morning, good afternoon and goodnight are shown by using your dominant hand as the placement of the sun in sky. Your hand will "rise" in the morning, be at "midday" for afternoon and "set" in the evening.

I have a deaf coworker and I always just wave as a good morning but I really want to put in the effort to give him more than just a wave. Thank you so much for letting me communicate with him

Is there a difference between wanting to say good evening and good night?
So in kindergarten we learned good morning and I was so excited to show my family when I got home and when I did they were all freaking out, laughing and saying “omg don’t do that!” I was so confused. Turned out, that second part is how you say “eff you” in Italian! Like how we use the middle finger here LOL! Since my family is part Italian that’s how they knew. It’s been a long running joke in my family now lol no worries I love it haha 😂

So work in a school and have wanted to say good morning correctly to this one deaf kid. I was getting them out of the car the other day signing good morning!!!!! As I said it excitedly signing it ‘happily’ to the best of my ability. mom signed something at me and I waved. It took your thank you video to realize she signed me great thanks. it’s the small things, there are teachers that know full asl and talk to her, but my little good morning I taught myself to sign, for a 10 second interaction meant the world to them. Cuz I learned how to sign the simplest thing. And that melted my heart.
I'm happy to know that you were able to communicate with your student. Communication is so important! By learning some signs and phrases (and maybe more over time) you will be able to form a connection with more students at your school.

I have a 3.5 year old great granddaughter that has autism and is non verbal. I would like to communicate with her. I have been to several websites with an attempt to learn asl. Yours is the best one that I like because you show each word several time and with a motion that I can pick up on. Other do the sign so fast and repeat only once. Thank you so much. And one more thing - could you recommend where I can find material for practicing watching ASL? I just started 2 months ago and for now I'm doing it on my own and all the sources that I have - one app and your videos, but I just kinda enlarge my vocabulary mb I should start watching some simple conversations... thanks in advance.

From the chin is "thanks"; from the mouth is "good"?
Great question. When using one hand, "good" and "thank you" are the same sign. The sign for "thank you" is directional and should be signed in the direction of the person that you are thanking. The context of the conversation will determine the meaning of the sign if you are in doubt. Does it have to be a dominate hand?
Your dominant hand should feel more comfortable. I feel it's natural to lead with my right (dominant) hand. If you prefer to use your non dominant hand than feel free but I would stick with whichever side you choose.

Are you calling the right hand the “dominant hand” or do you literally mean the “hand that you write with”?
Great question. Your dominant hand is the hand that you write with. I am right-handed. 👍🏼
@ASLLOVE Hi! I have a 9-year-old son who has Autism. I've been wondering whether or not I should start learning sign language to teach him since he is nonverbal. He has lots of behaviors, and I have been wondering if signing will help him with communication and allow me to do the same with him. Also, if it will help reduce his frustrations. His speech therapist believes that him using his AAC device to communicate is more universal in the world, and signing now may also confuse him. He is a fast learner, and has already picked up a few words using sign that we watched together on RUclips, and when he was younger. Can I ask your thoughts on this. Have you ever seen any success when trying to teach a child with Autism that is nonverbal sign language? Should I be reinforcing this more and just continue to have him use his AAC (speech device) in school? Thank you!
Thank you for sharing your story. In my experience, I have worked with nonverbal Autistic students who used Sign Language. I have seen parents and teachers use ASL to communicate and believe that it has been a positive/useful addition to communication tools (reducing frustrations also). Only you know exactly what you are experiencing with your son but I would personally use all of the tools available until you find what works best (possibly a combination). As for causing confusion, I trust that you will be able to decide if the addition of ASL is not helping. I would believe that there will be times when the AAC isn't working properly or isn't within reach and you will still be able to communicate with your son. This is just my opinion. I hope that you are able to find that perfect balance. ❤

@@ASLLOVE because in a Japanese drama a guy signs are you sure? As a question to a girl and the sign he does is a i sign pinky under his lip and says are you sure? Just wanted to clarify if this sign was accurate or what it means that’s all
@@jessegunn2033 I get it now. Thanks for taking the time to explain. The sign he is using sounds accurate although I use my pointer finger. It is my pointer finger near my chin with a slight forward motion.

The sign for evening looks so similar to the sign for English.
Absolutely, good eye. The context of the conversation will determine the meaning (and of course adding the sign for “good” before evening will help).

Why don't you complete the sign for good when it's combined with the second word?
Great observation! When you say “complete”, I am assuming you mean the two handed version of the sign for good (where the dominant hand comes down to meet the non-dominant hand). The simple answer is that using both hands is not a requirement for the sign “good”. You can use one hand like I do here. The sign flows better this way.

She may sign it slightly different but that doesn’t make it wrong. What exactly did she say was the problem?
