  • Guitarists love splitting hairs on tone, gear and amps. Out of all the amps I've tried... this might be the heaviest solid state tone you can get (with or without a boost). Speakers play a big role too. I reccomend g12t75s or V30s. I also elaborate that these amps thrive on lower tunings (Lower than D standard). apologize for the talking. I start playing at 5:00 or so

Don't know if it's just me but one of my favorite things about these Ampegs is that they love to be turned up all the way. Other solid state's that I've played or borrowed at shows crap out and turn to mud in the mix past a certain volume level unlike these. Gigged with the SS 70 watt combo for 9 years and it was extremely loud with a celestion g12k-85.

I just recently got a combo version of this amp and it sounds like it has a blanket over the speakers. The highs aren't really there so I threw an eq in the loop and that helped brighten it up A LOT. Is this a common issue with this model, or could there something wrong with my amp? Because even with a boost I'm not getting the presence I'm hearing here without a graphic eq in the loop.

      Might be the speakers.

@totalbullion5882 it's the speakers most likely... if you got a 4x12 connect it. But they are kind of old for an amp. It could use some maintenance. Also use a boost in the front. Don't get me wrong...it sounds gainy as hell without a Pedal but with a ts9 or any kinda overdrive will make it growl
