Hell, I'm 63 yrs. old and have been a huge Savoy Brown fan since the mid 60's. Dropped into a bar on Battery Street in San Francisco in the late 70's and to my surprise, there was the band performing. They shredded that night!
@@smwrbd He played Detroit pretty much every year right up to his death either billed as Kim Simmonds or Savoy Brown. You could usually catch him at The Magic Bag on Woodward in Ferndale. Saw him my self 100's of times from the 70's to just before Covid.
I always wanted to see Savor Brown back in the seventies, but never did. They played at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano in 2019 and I went and saw them. I'm glad I did, the show was good. I bought a Savoy Brown T-Shirt and always get lots of compliments when I wear it. I didn't know that Kim passed. Sorry to hear that. Rest in Peace!
@@smwrbd I think he had a great range of blues, boggie and classic, I hear at times some bo diddly influence. Ted nugget just reversed that bo style, love the riff to strangle hold, awesome tune my favorite from uncle Ted 😀
First song I heard by them, back in the late 1960s. Caught them at Madison Square Garden opening for Deep Purple -- Incredible band(s). RIP Kim Simmonds.
Saw Savoy Brown in the 70’s at Detroits Cobo Arena, years later in the late 80’s and 90’s got the privilege to see them in a small club many times, Kim Simmonds was a great guitarists and entertainer, greatly missed.
I tuned into these guys and THIS song back in the mid-70s. This touched my rock n roll soul and as fate would have it, I found a career as a locomotive engineer. For 37 years, seldom did the echoes of this song keep me from hearing the excellent work of Savoy Brown and smiling inside as I connected this to my job. Thanks guys!
It's a DAMNED SHAME there isn't more live video of the original line-up. Video tape was in it's infancy, cassettes being introduced in 1971. Chris Youlden has such a strong influence.
This is my FAVORITE song by Savoy Brown!! I alway loved the band's name. So cool. Takes me back to my wild & crazy era of youth. Damn it was fun!!!👍🏼✌🏼
I discovered Savoy Brown in the late 60s and was probably the only one in my group of music aficionados who appreciated their chops. The group was probably the first "extended" track artists (along with the Dead). Kim, thanks for the hours of musical enjoyment!
So great and a fave in my youth, had the pleasure of seeing them perform in the Detroit area many times. RIP to Kim Simmonds, thank you for the music 💜💜💜🙏🏻☮️🎸🎸🎸🎼🙏🏻
i got out of the army in 1971, discovered these guys and many others...status quo, sopwith camel, molly hatchet, etal....along with drugs, drugs, drugs....what a joyous time....pot, mescaline, shrooms, quality acid....partied for about 10 years, then got straight, grew up, formally educated myself....this band and others helped me become the 72 year old man i now am....thanks dudes
I was lucky enough to see them in Seattle, at the Paramont. They were headlining, with Fleetwood Mac, and Long John Baldry. It was a great show, and I think it was even broadcast live locally by one of the Seattle radio stations. Great night, and great memory’s. I didn’t realize how lucky I was to have all the great music around. Still have all my albums!
A very well put together heavy blues song that builds to a cresendo with an abrupt ending that really hits you like a freight train. Great song, from a very talented band.
One of my favorite songs back in the early 70's. This live version is e-x-p-l-o-s-i-v-e to say the least. Kim Simmonds is still one of the best blues players around today.
I saw them in Denver 1973 opening for ZZ Top - no body would give up demanding more encores... Then ZZ Top showed up and blew the roof off... Blue Oyster Cult was the opening band, then SB, and finished with Zz - goddamn that was a night
I listen to this great song a lot, almost daily. It will be played at my final gathering of friends. Through my 64 yrs of life I have been graced with the good fortune to see Kim S. and Savoy Brown a few times. Last time I was a guest of the group at Woodstock ILL. got to see them free...
Just my opinion and screw ya if ya don't agree but the late 60s and early 70s produced some of the most original bands and some of the best music ever. Period.....
Having Savoy Brown on 8-Track, or anything, doesn't make you old...it makes you cool. My first 2 8-Tracks I owned were FOGHAT-RockNRoll Outlaws & LYNYRD SKYNYRD-Second Helping. Thanks Mom & Dad. I just listened to Savoy Brown-Blue Matter on Cd today. No matter the format...keep it alive! Rock on....
I'm 60 and i often say that i don't need the trash they call "music" these days, because i keep discovering "new" music from the old days, bands and songs that i didn't know, and many i knew but never listened to. And here i am again, i can't believe i had never heard of this band -not even the name. Music from the 60's and 70's will live on, long after the trash of present day is totally forgotten. Of course there are some great bands and musicians these days, but what gets promoted by "the system" is just mucus.
Saw these guys at the Hollywood Palladium October 1972 along with Uriah Heep and Hemlock. I think it was my first live concert. I can still remember standing on the floor absolutely blown away by all three bands that night. This album had just been release earlier that year. I can remember it like it I was standing there right now. Great memories.
I saw them with Fleetwood Mac around that time in the "Kinsmen" Fieldhouse in Edmonton, Alberta. Both groups were excellent. FM were in their Danny Kirwan etc, incarnation (Bare Trees, Future Games), my favourite.
I was lucky enough to have seen these guys in the late 70s in Germany at an club when I was in the service. Even the pre-music before they played was great but SB blew me away. Definitely one of the best shows I've ever seen.
i got the "Blue Matter" album since... 1974 ..! and it still kick me all the times .. was my first Blues album !... then Electric Ladyland for sure !!!!!!!
I was turned on to SB by my Mom in 1969, at age 10. 4 years ago I saw SB live for the first time in a small tavern in Annapolis,MD. Since then Ive seen them at the blues fest in Hagerstown,MD. and again at the Rams Head tavern in Annapolis,MD. Kim Simmonds is an incredible guitar player, and a very friendly guy. After his shows he gives autographs, photos, and takes time to talk to fans.
I’ve been going back to the 60’s music era a bit myself lately. McKendry Spring’s “Flying Dutchman”, It’s A Beautiful Day’s “White Bird” are amongst my faves!
Add these to the list: Buffalo Springfield’s “Bluebird” - the long version that was never on an album but it’s here on UTube! The Doors “The End”. Such good tunes!!
A long time ago when I was a teen I saw a list by my Church of forbidden books and music. Hellbound train was on the list. So being a rebel at heart I listened to the song. Been a fan of Savoy Brown ever since.
This SO GOOD. Real passion and musicality. We were lucky to be young when this music came out and lasted from the mid -sixties to early seventies. Shows what a mockery fame can be when you see what is popular compared to these artists.
I saw them at the Fillmore East in early '71 and I saw them again on Saturday at the Throckmorton Theater in Mill Valley. It's a different band every time, but always KILLER!!! See these guys! Your ears and soul will thank you. And Kim is a very nice guy.
Got to see them at the Fillmore East in late 1968 early 69-they were supposed to play the week before but got held up coming into the US-they were the opening act for a show that was supposed to have Jeff Beck as headliner-but the Beck Band broke up that morning(got back together a week or so later)-so Savoy Brown ended up opening for Johnny Winter (his first show up north) and Chuck Berry in his first coming out of retirement show, to say the least it was a stunning show especially for a 17 year old kid. About a month later saw Savoy Brown again at a hockey arena on Long island- this time they opened for the Jeff Beck Band (with Rod Stewart on vocals and Nikki Hopkins on piano) and Mountain was the middle act in their debut show, Total price for these two shows around $10.Since we did not drive yet so my Dad had to drop off and pick me and a buddy up after the show- the Fillmore East show we could catch a train into the city. Different times for sure.

Excellent. First saw SB in Erdington in 1968, then in NYC in 1998. Finally, saw them do this in the World Trade Center courtyard 10 days before 9/11. Got to speak to Kim Simmonds. Great, unasumming guy. Thanks for posting.
Not many people I enjoy hearing play a solo as much as Kim. Been listening to him for over 40 years, and have seen countless shows. (Hi Kim!) He just gets better and better, but he seems to have a very hypnotic style in his solos. Love it.
Hellbound Train was one of the free three eight tracks I got when I got the car stereo installed in my 65 Ford Fairlane at Tape Head Company. Been a fan ever since. This is a great video.
I must say I love this version, despite people complaining it doesn't kick ass. It has the menacing, hypnotic groove that the original 1972 studio version has... Well done!!
I love this cut! I have the original album in my collection. Back in the day when I had the Wall of stereo in my apartment I used to crank this up and just groove on it.
Its been a life time for me since i have heard xavoy brown, ten years after, the band, lou reed and countless other bands. This is the music of my youth .. Fucking love it. Makes me happy. Takes awav all of pain i live with ever day of my life.. Never thougt i would get hurt so bad that i would never work again. If you are still working , be thankful. For every shift you come home in one peice.
your not the only one beat up by a hard life of drugs and bad decisions my brother! I entered college in 72 then started dropping acid. Dropped out...of course! Years of hard work, dope, women, then several failed marriages and children left me with a shattered. spine and a morphine habit. But, ya know what? For all the dumb shit and heartache, I wouldn't change a thing! Peace
Saw that tour in Holyoke MA at the turn of the century, Kim just smoked out out of that big bar, playing many songs I wanted to hear. Killer hard rock band in this incarnation of Savoy Brown. He's as always great, no matter who was in the band, I also saw him with Paul Raymond and Dave Walker in the band the first time, then the Boogie Brothers tour after that. Savoy Brown should be in the RR HoF! 🎸
Try getting your local classic rock station to play something like this instead of from their same ol', lame ol' top 40 dreg sheet. Savoy Brown, Humble Pie, Head East, Montrose, Little Feat, Canned Heat, The Night Hawks, James Gang, Mott the Hoople,, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, Faces, Grand Funk Railroad,.....Muthas ain't gotta clue.
+Brian Bois Gilbert Hi: Just heard this 2 days ago on our local WMNF.org (you can listen online). They play all this and more AND lots of independent stuff. I think you might like.
I'm 32 and have heard a lot of music and enjoy a wide variety of music. I just heard this song today on a local Pittsburgh Station (WDVE). Now I have some new music to download.
That night in 1968 was magic. The old Marquee Club,Wardour Street,London's West End.Savoy Rown and a little band that came on first, went by the name of Jethro Tull.Utterly brilliant, two sets apiece trying to outdo each other, one of the best nights ever. :-)
So you saw them with Mick Abrahams??? That evening must have been magic. Their first album on Island must have just been released. (wouldn't come out here in the States on A&M until sometime early in 1969.) shortly afterwards Mick quit & formed Blodwyn Pig. They had a dedicated following here in the States too. He still plays/ tours, health isn't the greatest fromm what I understand. A second CD reissue of the first album "Ahead Rings Out" has been available for a few years that includes all tracks from US & UK editions plus singles. It's a must have!! Thanks for sharing your memories!
Seems unlikely that this was in 1968 as is claimed, since Hellbound Train the album was released in 1972. Also Andy Silvester was only in the band 1971-2 and he co-wrote the song.
i was a freshman in college '71/'72 and i had to have Hellbound Train..i bought it at Sam Goody....every time we went out this song put us in the party mood
I've seen them several times both with and without Chris Youlden and they're great, however I will say that they neglect to do one of the best blues tunes recorded "I May Be Wrong" from Blue Matter. They were very young when they recorded the live side of that album and the first song, May Be Wrong, contains the very best blues lead guitar ever. Simmonds plays searing licks and runs that I've never heard him play since, , , The intro lead goes on for 3 minutes or so with bass and lead guitar solo only before the drums and vocal kick in. To give that side of the album more importance still are the vocals of Lonesome Dave Peverett who later went on to become the lead singer for Foghat. Unfortunately, Dave died around 2000. I would love to hear Simmonds play that song and with that lead even just once before I leave this earth . . . I've been waiting forever it feels.
I'm 140 years old without any arms or legs but I still listen to sad boy Brown and drink and smoke and do everything else all you youngsters only wish you could. Not really, and I'm not going to he'll either LOL! Rock and roll
Hellbound train was my first rock album. It was in 1972. Nowadays, i'm listening to godsmack, all of their 5 albums are in my playlist. Four decades and still rockin'.
I was young early 20’s, my Uncle took me to Pearl Street in North Hampton, MA . Standing Room only doors closed behind us and locked. My first intro to Savoy and The Blues. Great band, underrated, needs to be played on FM rock radio
I'm a relatively newcomer to Kim and Savoy brown thanks to the internet and You Tube. When I was 16 (in 1982 🤥) I started hanging out with my best friend's uncle who had a band. One of the song's they would do that I loved was Tell Mama. It was many years later that I started seeing and hearing more of their music online. This particular video has become one of my absolutely favorites of theirs. I was wondering if anyone has the whole show this was taken from. Rock on in Heaven Kim!
vl...Did some traveling to see a lot of Rock bands back in the 70's but never had the chance to see Savoy Brown. That was a great decade to travel and see many legendary Rock bands play some very original music.
8-Track, I even had a recorder.............! Kchunk! I used to have this album. The cover reminded me of days that would now scare the hell out of me. The mind! Not a good place to get lost in.
Rest in peace Kim, thank you for the music and memories 🎸🕊️💐

Excellent. First saw SB in Erdington in 1968, then in NYC in 1998. Finally, saw them do this in the World Trade Center courtyard 10 days before 9/11. Got to speak to Kim Simmonds. Great, unasumming guy. Thanks for posting.
oh yaeah 1974, i got into this band, along with wishbone ash, humble pie and of course jeff beck best music ever..
Dang. I can't believe I only just discovered Savoy Brown. Dang. So ridiculously cool. 😊
My favourite album by Savoy. Classic from 1972
Not many people I enjoy hearing play a solo as much as Kim.
Well done!!
Meine Erinnerungen....uuuhhh...✌💓✌💓✌
Geez , just when I thought nobody remembered these guys! Love it.. White Witch, Mason Profit, Ruby Jones, ah the memories. Thanks
Mason Profit, wow there's a flashback.
White witch , wow I havent heard anybody say that name in forever but yeah that was a staple
Peace
Saw them back in '74 in El Paso along with Blue Oyster Cult & Deep Purple as the headliner! In my opinion...Savoy Brown blew them both away!!!!
Heard them play this March 31, 1973 at The Warehouse in New Orleans. What a different time!
...Your Rocking on the otherside now Brother 😎...
Saw them one time, good times 1973.
Try getting your local classic rock station to play something like this instead of from their same ol', lame ol' top 40 dreg sheet.
Savoy Brown, Humble Pie, Head East, Montrose, Little Feat, Canned Heat, The Night Hawks, James Gang, Mott the Hoople,, Uriah Heep, Wishbone Ash, Faces, Grand Funk Railroad,.....Muthas ain't gotta clue.
Brian Bois Gilbert Agreed!! And can I add Alvin Lee to your list?
Jeffrey Williams Man, MOST definitely!!!!!!
+Brian Bois Gilbert
Hi: Just heard this 2 days ago on our local WMNF.org (you can listen online). They play all this and more AND lots of independent stuff. I think you might like.
Bahama Mama Darlin', I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship! ;)
Thanks, you made my day!
+Brian Bois Gilbert I'm always happy to turn people on to WMNF Tampa. Love them, enjoy!
Smokin' band! Glad I was able to see them back in the day.
I'm 32 and have heard a lot of music and enjoy a wide variety of music. I just heard this song today on a local Pittsburgh Station (WDVE). Now I have some new music to download.
heard this in 72'. I was hooked. SB in like no other band since. Thanks kim & Co.
Damm Kim got a Flying V one of those old ones priceless Thank You for this
That night in 1968 was magic. The old Marquee Club,Wardour Street,London's West End.Savoy Rown and a little band that came on first, went by the name of Jethro Tull.Utterly brilliant, two sets apiece trying to outdo each other, one of the best nights ever. :-)
Wow, Tull! So awesome!!
do you know if the whole show is available on dvd ?
Ki Blobsworth what ever happened to Jethro Tull.
Wow! How is it I never heard of these guys till now? Blew me away!
Street Corner Talkin
A DAMNED fine band!
Excellent camera work. Seeing his work on the fretboard really adds to it.
i was a freshman in college '71/'72 and i had to have Hellbound Train..i bought it at Sam Goody....every time we went out this song put us in the party mood
Dammit, thank you man. In the day these guys were disrespected, God knows why. Maybe now some folks will discover this amazing talent.
Yes!!
They refused to sell out, is what the rumor is... They are AWESOME and Raw pure talent!
Used to listen to this album in the car on 8 track cassette in 1977.
Happened to be in Denver around '85. They were downtown playing that night. Haven't been to Denver since, but seen Saviy again! And again!
I have a relative that played with savoy for a short period of time. Pretty cool to be able to say that!! 🎉🎉
Sehr sympathisch!🌻✌
Rock n Roll!!!!!!!!! joe
I heard Kim and the band at a small hole in the wall bar in High Bridge, NJ about 2004-05. Really great.
Loved savoy brown
vl...Did some traveling to see a lot of Rock bands back in the 70's but never had the chance to see Savoy Brown. That was a great decade to travel and see many legendary Rock bands play some very original music.
Kim and the various versions of Savoy Brown were a class act! RIP Kim!
Super song, music will never be this good again. I've LOVED Savoy Brown since 1979!!!
I love this number the soundtrack to my life. I am catching the hell bound train to some where you will never see me again..
used to see them every time they came to town. one of the best blues rock bands ever
8-Track, I even had a recorder.............! Kchunk! I used to have this album. The cover reminded me of days that would now scare the hell out of me.
The mind! Not a good place to get lost in.
This song puts me in a trance...I love it!
