J. Geils Band - Where Did Our Love Go (Studio Version)

- "Where Did Our Love Go" was originally a number 1 hit for music legend/diva Diana Ross and her "Supremes" group in 1964. The song was written by Motown's premiere production group: Holland-Dozier-Holland. The song has proven over the years that it is a timeless song.
The J. Geils Band formed in the great city of Boston Massachusetts and early on in their career, they were known for re-working some incredible, but nearly forgotten R&B classics. However, "Where Did Our Love Go" was of course not a lost classic. J. Geils' most well-known version of this song is their live rendition from their outstanding 1976 live album "Blow Your Face Out". The version in this video is the studio version.
Numerous groups/bands have covered this song. 80's new wave band Soft Cell recorded a version of it that comes in immediately after their massive hit "Tainted Love" in 1981. The "Tainted Love/Where Did Our Love Go" package turned "Tainted Love" into a 9 minute song. Although I love Diana's original rendition, and think Soft Cell did a great pop cover of the tune...The J. Geils version here to me is the best version of the song. Peter Wolf's vocals work perfectly with the tune, J. Geils' guitar licks and solo in the middle is phenomenal...and of COURSE Magic Dick's harmonica playing only adds so much more to the song than it ever had before. So sit back, relax and ENJOY this amazing song that has been reinvented over the years and most likely will continue to be reinvented for years to come! This song always will stand the test of time!
I love this song I first heard in grown ups 2

The nice thing about getting old.... you get to hear music from the 70's for the very first time...all over again!
This group belongs in the rock and roll hall of fame!!!!!!!!
Amen!!
This is the best live band of all times the only thing I regret is I didn't see them for an 8th time before they were done!!
It’s criminal that they are not in the hall. So many amazing songs and work ethic shame on hall of fame
Yep, them and Three Dog Night!
There is no rock and roll hall of fame because if there was the J. Geils Band would be in it.

Became a fan of J geils in the early 70s long before they had hits like centerfold and love stinks they have been around since the 60s
Best live band ever, always a house party !

These songs hurt my soul and are of a time that flew by so fast that you realize you dont have much time left. My mom would dance to these songs during our Friday night airband concerts in the living room while my dad drank his beer sitting on the sofa drifting away in bliss to these (motown) sounds.
Had we only taken the "life is short" seriously! I'm 54 looking back at everything now wishing I would done almost everything differently! We still have time i hope!
Never heard this cover before. 1976 discovered treasure.
First heard THIS as a teenager in the 70's..🎵🎶🎵🎶🎼
I have distilled my favorite section of Rock: It is Motown covers by JGeils, The Stones, just about any rocker outfit. The magic of Motown plus the power of rock n' roll.
the best experience live..My god, seeing this live it just blows the windows, doors everything to pieces!!!
I definitely can agree with you on that for sure. I love a lot of Rock covers of Motown songs too. That whole era was just incredible. No wonder all of the artists back then were covering each other's songs: they were all so good!
I seen them at union college chapel in Schenectady NY in the early. 70s fantastic rock and roll

The best version of this tune
J Giels is one of my favorite bands and I really like this version of this song. There are a lot of really good versions of this song, including the original by the Supreme's. My favorite though is by Soft Cell.
All are superb, but for me, I'd say it's between this and Donnie Elbert's effort.
best cover of this song love it, brings me back to my youth

"Where Did Our Love Go"
1976. Originally by Supremes (1964).
I had no idea that J Geils had a version of this old Supremes classic. Really nice job. Personal: "I'd never leave you baby"...❤️
It was a non-LP, 45-only single.
It charted at #68 in 1976.
