I danced to this song for what seemed like hours at my high school graduation party with a girl named Annette in 1975. I remember the magical feeling 40+ years later like it was yesterday. Always loved these guys.
I remember playing this song with my cover band down the cape and the place was just partying like crazy...J Geils RIP brother man...Your tunes simplky the BEST for making the crowd boogie all night
This my favorite Geils song! And yes, the full version is a must!!!! The instrumentals are UNBELIEVABLE! I hate when they play the short version on the radio and cut you off just as the fun is starting!!!!
My dad used to bump this record on my brothers Technique turntables and pioneers.. they both drummers and I grew to be a rhythm guitar guy.. I can hear all my influences in this one song I was about 5yrs old at the time
The picture of Wolf with Centerfold Models was taken at Uptown Theater Chicago 1981 I was front row. That is my shirt laying on the stage behind Peter.
First heard this when my big brother brought the album home. I was so mesmerized by the red vinyl disc. Even at the tender age of 8 back then. This song just jumped out at me. No one else I can think of from back them was rocking a ska groove like this. The jam stomps and may favorite part is that after saying what need to be said, everyone in the band gets a chance to strut for a bit.
John Geils a personal friend of mine in his Groton Massachusetts home found unresponsive by police doing a welfare check @ 4 P.M. Tuesday 4/11/17 @ the age of 71. RIP John love you and will miss you.
The first album I ever bought with my own money. I had the same haircut as "Jay" in high school. Now I'm 60 years old and a music teacher: guitar, bass, piano, ukulele, harmonica, etc. I try to convey this vibe to all students, young and old.
The lyrics are incorrect. I attended the Blow Your Face Out concert (where they recorded for that live album) in the old Bawst'n Gahdn'z in 1976. I was 16 and my father waited across the street at the Penalty Box bar. It was my first concert, general admission and the last general admission concert there. Procol Harum opened without Robin Trower. Awesome concert. I remember seeing a guy almost fall over the railing in the balcony when at the last second someone grabbed him by the back of his pants and heaved him back. I remember that a good sized fire was lit in the middle of the floor. It was crazy. Real crazy. J. Geils performed for 3 1/2 hours. The PA speakers were two huge columns that seemed to be 70 feet tall or more. I've never seen anything like that even after that. Great music. The kids today don't know what they have missed. They missed the best R&R that this country will ever see. Real music. There was so much talent back in those days and so much originality from every style of music. And the lyrics were so cool, so much fun to hear. Todays music is just plain dog shit.
Oh mi god I was at that show. I was 13 and had made my way into Boston on the T, alone. I was totally in love with TJGB. My mom is still amazed I'm alive...
Damn, The Penalty Box and a dog and burger from Joe & Nemo what a time to be alive ! Thankfully Sully's Tap is still hanging on. J.Geils needs to be in the HOF !
This is great news, but what would be even better news is if they finally get elected INTO the RRHOF in 2017! So that means all of us fans have to vote for them on the RRHOF website as much as we can because we cannot let this golden opportunity slip away from us again! So please! - Get out the vote for J. Geils Band so we can see Peter Wolf give the absolute BEST and craziest acceptance speech in RRHOF history like only the Woofa Goofa Mama Toofa can do! Here's the website where you can vote for them: www.rockhall.com/vote . And just to let you all know - you can vote more than one time as the ruling says that you can cast 1 ballot per day through December 5th, 2016...so vote away and we can make sure the Original Bad Boys from Boston finally get the recognition they deserve!
The 70's, Abbott's game room, playing pool, drinking 'Boone's Farm', laughing at the cloud of smoke hanging by the ceiling, making out with 'what's her name'... now this was music.
Saw them in concert at Cleveland Stadium in 1980 with Bob Seger, Eddie Money and Def Leppard! A rock blowout for sure! Ah, that was back in the days when we could smoke and drink at concerts and nobody cared! Concerts these days sure are different!
Awesome song. Reminds me of college in Amherst, MA in '73. With all the other great songs this funky band created, they should be in the R&R HOF. Long live Peter Wolf!!
saw em twice in the 80s. great show each time. Small venue in Central Falls RI was one of them. Up close and personal and played some songs from their then new album, rage in the cage, etc. Great
this brings back some awesome memories. i saw them in Bloomington, In. when this album was released and it was a great show. we did lose the car that night but when we finally landed it was on a street, not even close to the arena. lol
R.I.P. J. Geils! 2:56 is when people parachute in to get to the dance floor, and this can also be somewhat sped up and re-looped - dance perfection - thank you for posting a timeless classic from a true party band & one of the best of the 1970s AND 1980s! Cheers, DAVEDJ
I heard this song when I was a kid and I wanted to listen to it again today. The only lyrics I remembered were "give it to me". It took hours of Googling "give it to me" and sorting through 100 other songs with the same words. I almost gave up but I finally found it. Worth the effort.
at 2:21 the wheels start to come off..at the 3:00 minute mark they go stratospheric! Love the organ, bass line, guitar riff, and Magic Dick never disappoints. Truth be told I could do without the first two minutes.
I had never heard of this song before I'd went to BreWingz to pick up order to go. For years,I always listen to Centerfold and Freeze Frame but this song I like. In the description,it had said it didn't chart well. Well done, guys. Even you,John Geils. Thumbs up!
These guys rocked past the cops in Orlando sometime in 73-74. The Bulls did not like the pot smoking hippies. The band lifted spirits above paranoia and the audience followed the bands lead. Love!
You know I'd have to agree with you there man! I've seen quite a few live groups in my day, not to say I've been around for a long long time however, but these guys just have a certain energy/charisma about them that I gravitate towards the most. The fact that they have so many great songs (both originals and perfectly picked covers) sure doesn't hurt either! Have a great year in 2015 William!
+William Hunley They're so good. I saw their show in Portland back in September and I was so blown away by how they sounded like they were performing live in the 70's. Lord knows how good they must have sounded then. An incredible show.
I have seen the eagles live a tremendous band '' great performance deep , but this is a different kind of energy'' and its unique'' believe that'' there is no comparison' nite and day'
OK I was 12 or 13 when I first saw these guys live like 1971or 1972. They played the Santa Monica Civic. I talked my older bro into taking me. I was hooked. Could not get enough of them. They combined blues, soul, funk and then reggae. This was and still is my favorite album. BTW- I saw them many many times all over the country and more. Meet them many times. So underrated as a band. Incredible musicians. Just saw them again. This is a great description and slide show..thx 4 posting.
I was their 16 year old bellboy when they stayed at the Berkeley-Carteret Hotel in Asbury Park NJ after they played at the AP Convention Hall (1972). In that awkward silence on the elevator up to their room post-concert I asked them "where do you go next?"-- they laughed and Peter Wolf said "outta the business". I saw Peter a few years later at the Beverly Hills Polo Lounge on Super Bowl Weekend in '76.
We had a jukebox at Higgins Jr HS in Peabody Mass-1972 we played this song constantly. Still can't believe the powers that were-allowed this and played the long version-I'm so glad I experienced that! I was finally in the right place at the right time. Anyone from Higgins remember the big rock across from the school? The train tracks? That's all I'm gonna say! Thanks for posting this!!!
The last time I saw these guys was in 1982 in Germany with the Stones. What a great show! I wish it was on video. Two bands that in many ways are so alike!!! I never would have made that connection without seeing it. I use to play quite a few J Geils tunes in many cover bands. I played keys and harp. My favorite organ solo was "Give It To Me" my heart would race as the solo kick in! Love that bad boy! I gave up harp because the cold winters and the harp playing were brutal on my lips. Yes, that version is nothing compared to this one. I never understood why any DJ would want to play the shortened version over this original one. No comparison whatsoever
***** AM radio played the short version. FM played the superior long version. FM listeners were album-buyers. Singles sales were losing their importance. Had the original red vinyl many moons ago and wore grooves in that thing. This song is still so fresh to me. Where did house-party bands go. Put this on at a house party and we were dancin', laughin'; partying, getting laid. Defiitely the way to do it, nowadays i'm sure they have their own stuff, but give me J. Geils if I was ready to set the party on fire!
This should be counted as one of the top 10 best rock songs of all time, hands down. What a jam!
Excellent driving music!
Love it 😀
💕 love it!
Totally agree

Saw them while they were touring for Bloodshot album. This song was one of the highlight of the show.
I danced to this song for what seemed like hours at my high school graduation party with a girl named Annette in 1975. I remember the magical feeling 40+ years later like it was yesterday. Always loved these guys.

Classic as usual. This band is so very good. One of my all-time favorites.

This my favorite Geils song! And yes, the full version is a must!!!! The instrumentals are UNBELIEVABLE! I hate when they play the short version on the radio and cut you off just as the fun is starting!!!!
When you get the piano slide and the guitar riffs, you know you got the long version, which is mandatory!!
I always play the full version of EVERYTHING on WINY
Boy o boy this was my jam back in the day!!! I'm now 69 still a jam!! Omg😮
One of my favorites I’m 69 and still listening in 2024 loving every minute of it

Thanks a bunch! I'm glad to hear that! I agree. This band deserves so much more credit!
I was a local truck driver in the early 90s and late 80s and would ,make a stop, get coked out and go to my next stop with these guys blasting.
gotta love them days.
Who would thumbs down such a wonderful song? 👍🏼✌🏼
Good deep, rootsy, funky vibes. Always brings a smile to me face. RIP J
