Great tips! I never put a beetle in a decorated terrarium before. Some large stag beetles usually dig the substrate to burrow themselves and destroying the substrate surface in the process, so I tend to keep them in a moderate enclosure enough to keep them alive. I guess someday I will try creating one for my smaller beetles like lamprima adolphinae or any small prosopocoilus sp. However I suggest to not spray the enclosure too frequent or the substrate will become too moist for the beetle. Their claw might get stuck in the damped soil and resulting the beetle to lose some arms.
I keep a lot of Tarantulas, Scorpions, Vinegaroon etc, but I recently got interested in some beetles and this video was very helpful!

Hi. Total beginner here, having found about twenty drone beetle larvae in a disused cucumber planter and helping my 6-yr old care for them. Have transferred them (with the same soil we found them in) to a largish terrarium, but didn't add any substrate yet - will do that shortly based on this video - thanks for that tip! How crucial is de-pooing the terrarium, and how does one differentiate poo from just soil?
the larval poo ( grass ) are in a small pellet form and iff the substrate gets too full of it change the substrate and add some white soft rotten wood chunks but adult poo is a liquid and doesn't matter too much.

I have some questions about heat and light.
For larvae i would like to use a heat pad placed outisde the box, at a few cm of distance feom the side.
For adults i was thinking about e heat lamp. Do they need a proper light simulating day and night for a proper survivaland reproduction?

Hi, I'm waiting for my xylotrupes Gideon to arrive. I've never had a below before & was wondering if there are any live plants I could put in the Viv with it? It's 45x45x45 so got lots of space! Also, can I use normal compost soil for it? And...(sorry for all the questions, but there isn't much online!!!) Am I right in thinking that we long as it's no cooler than 15°c I won't need to use the head mat?

i live in the uk and i really want a beetle, no where near me sells them though. is it really safe for the beetle to be sent to me by postage from sites like rhino beetle uk? ive never been sent live animals before
It’s a scary thought, but most live insects make it through the post just fine. However, it is usually at the buyers discretion to have them shipped and therefore is not the retailers fault if they don’t survive. There are many retailers across the UK and I’m sure many would be willing to allow you to collect :)
I have a question, I’m planning on getting a beetle and I’ve been trying to think on which type of cage to use. My grandmother said a birdcage could be a great cage to keep them in (since she had one). I was thinking either a plastic cage or giant glass jar for them, so I ask, which is a great cage to set up a beetle terrium?
Hi there! Thanks for your question, it's a good one :) A birdcage, to me, sounds like it might have holes in it? In which case I wouldn't use that. A glass or plastic terrarium is much better. You can use almost any tub so long as you can get a minimum of six inches of substrate and have at the very least double the hight of your beetle in height (on top of the substrate). You'll also need to make sure it has enough floor space to crawl around on so that it isn't too confined. It depends on the size of the beetle really so adjust those measurements accordingly. Hope that is helpful!

Hi, to my knowledge, stag beetles are the only ones that you'll want to keep separate. I believe smaller species of flower beetle (Pachnoda, Torquata, Chlorocana Etc.) house better with other beetles and insects :)

I really want a big beetle, like the rhino or hercules, however, they only live as full grown like, 4-6 months... and spens up to 21 months as a larva....

Hey! I have a big question, can you keep beetles in soil which has some charcoal? My soil typically's mixed with charcoal, and I'm wondering if beetles could live in Charcoal Mixed Soil. Please respond!
Any charcoal or activated carbon mixed with soil is perfectly fine, even beneficial for all beetles. People add it to help remove a bit of the harmful ammonia from mold/detritus. I personally also add springtails in with my beetles as they help eat away mold for me.

yeah, it basically never spoils or attracts flies like fruit and they just eat off of it for about a week

Hi there, I have a video on caring for larvae on my channel! :) It;s really easy though, they just need nice moist soil and some decaying leaf litter or rotten wood. More often than not, the larvae from pet shops are grown enough that they no longer eat a lot so you shouldn't need too much food for them :) Hope that helps!

Hi, are you asking if the terrarium is fit for a rhino beetle? If so, then yes, it’s absolutely fine. Just make sure you have plenty of substrate and plenty of room above the substrate.
