    When I was in sixth grade I was in gardening class and I heard a girl scream... she was pruning a rosemary busy and she found a four inch brown praying mantis... I had a (clean) Starbucks bento cup to catch beetles with for my lizard. (I had enough food at home but wanted to give him a challenge) I raced over, picked up the mantis gently, put it in the cup and ran to my classroom. My science teacher was a weirdo and had a koi pond with turtles in the class. I gave him the cup and then he set up a simple terrarium and spritzed it. Beyoncé (the mantis) lived for the next month in our class then we let her go back into the garden. We all got to hold her and feed her fruit flies and crickets. I'm turning thirteen in four months and I'm asking for an orchid mantis. I'm really excited! Thanks for this video it was super helpful!!

      Yes, they also hang up there to molt and lay their eggs. Very important. You could line it with a fine mesh, and that would do nicely.

      That and she said it was an adult. It doesn’t need to freaking molt anymore! She clearly hasn’t been a praying mantis keeper before.

    I was checking this to make sure I'm not missing anything since I've been keeping a stick mantis since it was a nymph. It's almost 2 months old now and about 4cm! So fun watching her grow! She did have a mishap today where I found her her leg detached and stuck to a twig. Nooo! It may have been a shedding mishap so I now have a spray bottle to keep the moisture levels up. I hope her leg still has a chance to grow back because she's been doing so well and she's such a fun pet!

    Hi :) This video shows you how to set up the terrarium. We will shortly be posting another which explains general care, feeding etc. You can also find all that information on the website (see description). As a first time mantis I would recommend something like a Creobroter, Sphrodomantis or Hierodula. Guides to breeding and care can be found on their species pages on the website (link to hierodula in description above). Thanks for watching!

    Serious question: Why a heat mat?
    In my opinion it is not good for mantis.
    I use a halogen spot. It is light source and heater in a single unit which imitates the sun perfectly.
    Using a heat mat makes it impossible for the animal to climb down seeking a place to cool off.

    • @deadbird4164
      @deadbird4164 4 года назад

      It is fine for the mantis if you are going to be leaving and having the heater in your house off but if it’s on for too long than it can harm the mantis or even kill it. If you live in a hot place or have a garage that gets warm I’d say you should put it outside and if not put it in the hot garage

    Recently orders an l4 mantis and it molten on the first day and lost half a leg. The next day another seem damaged and she/he won't use it. I'm guess it will heal in the next molt but I'm scared because it won't eat when I offer food and I hope it eats when I leave the crickets and house flies overnight. Any advice ?

    • @deadbird4164
      @deadbird4164 4 года назад

      I have advice, sorry I’m late but if that happens again did you try to feed her 2 weeks after she molted because they normally don’t have the urge to eat until 2 weeks after shedding, and also don’t leave any food they aren’t eating over night in their cage because when molting or fresh out of molting that can bother them and potentially kill them, if it’s crickets they may eat the praying mantis too. And if they don’t use one of their legs that’s most likely because they didn’t finish molting and in the next molt they will grow it back.

    • @debbiedebbie9473
      @debbiedebbie9473 3 года назад

      I read that if the terrarium isn't humid enough, they can lose limbs during the molting process.

    Couple years ago I found a praying mantis in my yard. I had this 10w x 12h x 20l (inches) aquarium so I filled it up with dirt from my yard like and put little weeds in it. It was a hotbox in there the first time I checked it so, I removed some dirt and plants. I put worms in the dirt and found insects around my yard to feed the mantis. It grew so huge it was insane. like 5 or 6 inches. End of story I fixed up the terrarium to be less ambient, just a layer of rocks and a few twigs. I found that the twigs had a strange thin orange growth like fungus on it. Then soon after the mantis had it on its leg. So I put him outside.. lol. I was so mad that after all that work he got a fungus on his leg.

    • @zerosanity2235
      @zerosanity2235 8 лет назад

      So mad after all that work? You were mad that you couldn't look after it, so fungus spread to it? Yeah. Must have been a lot of work.

    I found a injured baby praying mantis in my back yard today and took it in to save its life. This was about two years ago and we have this crazy strong bond together. Is that normal? Also my friends want me to put parry (its name) in a bug fighting tournament with common house hold spiders. I know for a fact that it'll win but would it still be a risk?

    No artificial leaves, no mesh which is an important part of the setup, and no thermostat to control the temperature of the heat mat... not a brilliant setup tutorial.

      Jodie C Yeah, good video but poor set-up :/

    • @Shazzkid
      @Shazzkid 7 лет назад +13

      Lol you are obviously a noob in this hobby, mesh isnt needed, and neither is a thermostat, you buy heatmats at specific wattages, you just choose the necessary one...and really? Artificial leaves? That's certainly not necessary for them, itll only be decoration for thr viewer.

    • @vixeylazer5796
      @vixeylazer5796 6 лет назад +8

      Shazzkid You sound a lot more like a noob here. Mesh is absolutely important. Unless you plan on disturbing your mantis constantly to clean out their enclosure and put in new substrate. It is completely irresponsible and careless to not have a thermometer of some sort in the enclosure. The only thing you were right about were the fake plants being for the owners viewing pleasure. Because fake plants do nothing for the mantis or their environment, and they're also at risk of harming them occasionally. REAL plants, are what is needed. In every enclosure. For pretty much everything kept in terrariums/vivariums etc. Which is yet another reason why mesh is needed.

    Where did u get that cage?

  • @craigdiaz4143
    @craigdiaz4143 10 лет назад +9

    Am I really expected to believe that is a glass cage? It looks very acrylic to me. And, if it IS acryclic (plexiglass), you should absolutely NOT be using a heat mat, which can melt the material.
    Oh, and I think the cage needs more green too.

    • @craigdiaz4143
      @craigdiaz4143 10 лет назад +8

      Sorry, you are correct. It wouldn't melt. It would "soften" and be subject to warping.
      Also, not only do most heat mats have no thermostat, but they fluctuate in heat output. I'm also pretty sure they get hotter than 22C.
      22C in the vid refers to the reading in the viv, not the mat.
      If it is not touching the material, it probably won't do anything, you are right there.

    • @Mattipedersen
      @Mattipedersen 5 лет назад

      It's obviously plastic. However, what you have to understand is that the term "glass box" is a phrase, in British English, which may not translate very well, to United States English. It's similar to how we still refer to eye-glasses as "glasses", even though the lenses tend to be made of plastic, today.

    If the plastic of the tank rests on the heatmat it can easily melt the bottom of the tank. I know this one is raised up, but every heat source should be on a thermostat just in case.

    btw for beginners: the right size is important but you dont want to go to big either as mantis dont hunt activly they tend to wait for an opportunity which means if what ever you are feeding wanders near them they have a snack also they keep eating even after they had enough so overfeeding is a possibility now if you have a habitat that is to big there is a smaller chance of the prey actualy going near the mantis so you have to put in more of the food which means you either have to fish out the excess after the mantis ate which can be a pain in the ass or you risk over feeding thats why you need to consider the size of the habitat

    • @raver377
      @raver377 6 лет назад

      for example for smaller mantis a mason jar is all you need which gives them enough space but is also small enough so you can basicaly guarantee that its gonna catch what you put in their as food and thus you dont have anything to clean realy. if you want to you can do it once a week or so and that is fine and most species can be trained to walk on your hand and you can even watch tv with them without them trying to get away so they have more then enough space that way (but ofc you still need to have the minimum requirements for size: triple the size of the mantis in heigth and about double the size in width is more then enough)

    Hi! Mantis make minimal frass (poo), so that is not too much of a concern and shouldn't require frequent changing. If your mantis is dropping lots of uneaten prey then this may rot at the bottom of the cage and should be removed. If you are using banana to feed fruit flies (for example if the mantis are very small) then the substrate would need changing more frequently. Otherwise you shouldn't need to change it too much. Hope that helps!

    Hey, what do you think about Mantis eating Leeches? I have some left over from a fishing trip, and I just built a very bio reflective terrarium with perfect humidity, shade, and temperature settings. I would say mine is not yet 3 months old, but I want to feed it a leech. Any comments?

    I found a nymph on my tire, he must have been quite new, very tiny. I live in Pahrump NV USA where it is very hot, looked up what type he might be, Desert Mantis. Anyways, habitat made of his natural environment, fed him tiny ants and other tiny critters he would normally eat. He has since molted 4 times, grew into new habitat lots to climb on, graduated to larger ants (pincers at mouth), little moths, spiders etc. Doing nicely. This last molt he popped out with full wings but ... must have gotten trapped then freed himself but discombobulated with thorax (or is it called shield?) bent dramatically. I've been quite worried but he didn't give up so I haven't either. Gave him time to adjust, rest with misting to keep him hydrated, took out unnecessary bits from his habitat so he could roam easier. Tried one tiny ant, he watched it but he can't grab to eat. He did nibble a tiny piece of water soaked coconut, tiny bit of water soaked apple so I figured ok he's hungry he will eat and survive that ordeal. I got a small roach I guess it was, bonked it on the head so it weren't so frisky, held him with tweezers and my Mantis (Dude) gobbled him up. I've read once they get wings they are adult and no longer molt, is that correct? Anyone? Will continue to feed him, but also give him the opportunity to try hunting on his own. I'm not sure he will ever be able to again, but will let him show me he can or, can't. Great video - thank you!

    My golly, this video is old, but i'm glad i came accross it. This is the best video for beginners, not most videos that tells you to use stupid jars! I love it and I agree when you said , "If you're gonna have a pet, it's important to give it the best conditions that you can." (2:23). This should always be the case! Otherwise, don't own one, you cheapskate! One side note though, don't put too much branches, it's important as well to have as much as open space, so as not to stress the mantis. Also important, the terrarium should be made of glass! Great video, lots of tips and insights, and no stupid jars! Kudos! (^_^)

    It's not that important what you use as the substrate (bottom layer) as the mantis will spend most of its time on the branches. The most important thing is that you keep the terrarium humid by spraying it with water and remove any dead material from the bottom of the terrarium if your mantis does not eat it. Hope that helps!

    Great video, however after setting up my mantid enclosure, complete with an Imagitarium (brand) thermometer, one of my babies got stuck to a tiny section of exposed tape/glue on the backside. This never even crossed my radar. It was so meniscal, it was practically undetectable. Just a warning to baby mantid parents. Be vigilant, and extra cautious. I plan to contact this brand to make them aware of this design flaw. I think this could have been avoided if the space behind the thermometer hadn't been so open bc the baby crawled into the space behind it and his head got stuck to the edge where the tinest bit of glue was exposed.

    hey thanks for vid, really helpful. I got my first mantis last xmas (a griffin female) and have been hooked since! i now have four types, a flower, dead leaf and congo green. Although i bought a book with the griffin it didn't really help with the basics. Although i now think i am just at a place where i feel comfortable all the information helps, especially anything on molting if you can? MORE VIDEOS PLEASE!!!! your a star thanks harry

    Hi. My new praying mantis always climbs up to the top (fully grown adult, with wings).
    And the food is always at the bottom. I don't have substrate, but there are plenty of twigs in there. But it never climbs the twigs, only the sides of and lid of the terrarium. So what do I do?

    • @angelorivera6586
      @angelorivera6586 9 лет назад

      U should always wet the sides

    • @angelorivera6586
      @angelorivera6586 9 лет назад

      Or the twigs are small or big enough to climb or you have a bad and small cage?

    • @mikuxone
      @mikuxone 9 лет назад

      i have a decent sized cage cos mine is a small species of mantis, about 6cm in length.
      It just likes to go to the ceiling. I transferred it to another cage and it still goes to the ceiling.

    Hi Jess, We just had our first Mantis hatching. Thank you for your guide. How long is the substrate soil good for until you throw it out. I read that they are so messy it has to be done frequently. Did not notice a video yet on your website. These little guys are really cool.
