When I was younger we found a golden praying mantis outside, she was cold and dying as it was winter, we took her in as a pet and named her Goldie, we had two medium sized hibiscus trees inside and she lived happily on those. We went to petsmart and bought live crickets and fed them to her with tweezers!!! It's was so cool and we grew very fond of her :,) a few weeks later she died naturally, we rescued her and it was great, rip Goldie xxxxx

I'm actually quite amazed right now.
A few years back I owned an Orchid Mantis (her name was Sophie. Cute little thing) and kept her in a small tank with real plants and all that and fed her fruit flies ever so often.
She lived about a year and up until now I didn't know their general life span was actually that short, so I thought she had died way too early.
Was I really that good of a mother after all? ;w;

Praying Mantises are cool. I think they're easy to keep, easy feed, and i love their inquisitive nature. Problem that i don't like about them by experience is, they don't live very long..

My purple winged mantis tried to eat my fingers, purple wings are highly aggressive which is a contrast to the very timid large brown mantis I keep (yes they are just called large brown mantises, no it's not very creative)

Hi Taylor! I'm an Entomologist and I've kept plenty of mantises too! Budwing mantises are excellent for beginners, they are voracious eaters that aren't picky about food, and aren't prone to molting problems.
I just wanted to help by clarifying a few things:
- You can mate the male to the female without her eating him -- you just have to make sure she is very well fed and that the male has plenty of hiding spaces. Always introduce the female to the male's enclosure when she's gravid.
- But you're right, you should not keep any mantis species together, especially not budwings. Some are more docile than others, but they will still see each other as potential prey.
- Substrate isn't so important -- they don't walk on the ground if they can help it, they prefer climbing and jumping. Substrate (if any) should only be used as a sort of humidity. I prefer damp sand, as it's not as prone to mold as eco-earth or coir substrates.
- Flying prey is one of the favorite food sources, if not the favorite source of all mantises -- some species will only eat prey that flies. Crickets are actually fine to feed mantises, but (big chain) storebought crickets can be susceptible to a number of diseases that can kill your mantis. If feeding them prey that doesn't fly, your mantis probably won't be able to see it's available to eat, or be able to strike at it when it's on the ground. Therefore it's best to feed them with tweezers! They'll be scared of the tweezers at first but they'll learn that they bring food soon enough.
Other neat things: Whatever you feed them, they will not eat the wings, or the tegmina (in the case of roaches or crickets), and may also leave other 'parts' on the ground that they are too full to eat. These can mold, so be on the lookout!
Female eating the male while mating is just natural, it will help the expectant mom and most importantly the mantis species, even that's actually what the male wants since that will guarantee a successful mating, we must not judge them by human standards.
I saw this video when you first posted it, I was 14 at the time, five years on I’m 19 now and got my own last weekend, absolutely love it, you inspired me as you did with my crested gecko I got him when I was 15. Careful research was done before purchasing any of my animals, all surviving and thriving. I love your videos, thank you for the content :)

Few corrections;
Some mantis will need a heater, dependant on where in the world you are and the species, though humidity is usually more important so it'll help them moult. so keep that substrate moist! (did that last bit sound weird? I think it sounded weird.)
Mantis don't get territorial, they're just psychopathic and will eat any other mantis (well, anything really) if they're hungry. Only species of mantis that wont are ghost mantis, though there's always the risk of predation.
Females don't always eat the males during mating, that's a common myth. Feed up the female and give her a lovely roach before introducing her to the male and the lil guy should live through the night.
and theeeeee best mantis protip ever; stick some netting at the top of the viv and make sure a stick reaches up to it, it'll help them moult cleanly and there's less chance of them falling to their deaths.
(And they'll happily hand feed too, especially a bit of the honey on your finger. It's stupidly cute. :)

Here’s my story:
My grandma was like separating these curry leaves from the sticks. And there was this mantis and everyone freaked out. I saw this dude and I was like he’s so cool. I handled him for like 15 minutes then I had to was my hands for food. I set him somewhere and I never saw him again 😭

Just a quick tip for others wanting to make an enclosure at home: Avoid buying fake plants from Walmart/Dollar Tree/Craft stores UNLESS they specify they are 100% untreated. Often the cheap fake stuff has harmful dyes, unseen color glitters/dusts, or fragrance that will make your little mantis buddy lethargic at best, dead at worst. Better safe than sorry! Don't be cheap when it comes to life - buy the safe stuff like Taylor or go for real plants and put a little more work into it. :)
Ama Lau I got my leafs for my crested gecko at Petco and I know petco isn't the best place to get things it is certified to be untreated so am I fine I'm so protective of my gecko and LOVE him to peices!

You just made my life so much better. Literally I have that same container that I’m keeping my hatchling in but it’s just a regular wild mantis nothing special but cute asf. I was thinking maybe I was stupid for putting it in a container because I used to have a 4 inch mantis in an actual octagon tank that stood 6 foot tall in my room. Sometimes I would think it got out but actually the tank was just big.

I used to keep Praying Mantis' as pets, I had 5 over 3 years and they are such lovable and peaceful creatures...to humans, obviously not other insects. I kept mine in a rather large container, I don't know what brand it was but it seemed to fit them fine. Great video, makes me miss the good old days :)!
What's the point of keeping a pet that lives that short? It's actually quite sad, it reminds us of how short life can be or is. Shit, I'm sad now :(
codergames but there's absolutely nothing wrong with providing that creature with a fantastic, fulfilled life during that short time.
codergames They live for a year and a half if held in cold environments. Plus they are cheap so buy lots. They cooler species are expensive though.

its more the fascination rather than the keeping a pet i think, they are a really cool insect to watch with many different stages in their life. i find it amazing that in such a small space of time a creature can change so much.
plus they dont cost much, once one has finished enjoying its life you could try another species with different markings etc.
The way I look at it is it can give us a better appreciation for life and how precious/short it can be.

How do you put fruit flies in the tank?
Take A straw and put some fabric over one end. Now you suck at the “closed“ end to catch the flies, put a finger on the open end and blow them carefully in the mantis' cage.
Put them in the freezer for 3min to slow them down, then tap then into the jar.
You can buy flightless fruit flies and they dont fly.
Got a few in our yard. I let them crawl up my arm to my other arm from time to time. That's enough for me to get my praying mantis fix. Since I live in Los Angeles and the climate is very hospitable, I feel like I'm doing the best service to them by keeping them on our plants in the backyard.
I am here because I found one in my garage and luckily I have an unused 29 gal tank to keep in it.

^^^ my extensions make my hair look a lot more pink than it actually is. I'm no hairstylist so I couldn't really find the right combination of dye to make rose gold hair extensions, so I just did pink

I had a praying mantis on my patio in recent months and I just found an egg case in my flower pot. I live in a climate where it's snows in the winter. Do you think they will have a better chance of surviving if I put it in a ventilated container and keep it in the fridge until spring, or should I just leave it outside?

I'm allergic to coconut, do you have any other recomendations for ground cover? I would love a prayingmantis and some male wasps with one or two queens. Do you have any suggestions for wasp habitat? I would like mine big enough for possible foraging when I give them meat in protien seasons. Also, do you suggest a heating lamp for the wasps? I know they have a hard time in winter
