Still one of the most memorable episodes. And many thanks to Jimmy as Anne Widdecombe said he was the reason she would never come back to the program again.
I'm American and a big Jimmy Carr fan, but as much as I've heard about Ann Widdecombe, I've never seen her. Seeing her now, thank God Jimmy Carr is in this episode.
I'm not normally a Jimmy Carr fan but he was the only one who really managed to hold his own here. Without him the episode would have been a monologue from Widdicome. Even Merton seemed at a loss.
I've never enjoyed Jimmy C more than here, taking on A Widdicomb. She may be a piece of work, but the two episodes of Hignify with her hosting bring out the best in the panel.
I think the exact same thing! I thought her and Jimmy got along great so I didn’t understand in later episodes… Paul and Ian both commented that Widdicombe would not come back because of how Jimmy carr treated her. I thought they got along just fine? What am I missing?
@@hullinstruments What you're missing is an unedited, hours-long recording session from which a lot has been edited out before televisual broadcast. I think it shouldn't take too much imagination to imagine what might have been said in those cut-out bits since the person we're talking about is Jimmy Carr
@@hullinstruments she was somewhat of a good sport about it (or at least it was edited to appear that way) but he did mock her quite a few times. As did everyone else. It was probably jimmy pretending to flirt with her that did it.
@@chrism6952 pure gold in my opinion I would love to see the hours uncut version. Another person who stood up extremely well after the editing was Boris Johnson's first appearance. Can't stand the man's politics and I'm an American so I don't know enough to come in anyway... But he was downright charming and likable as hell as they kept drilling him and he kept getting more and more uncomfortable but still laughing it off.
@@hullinstruments Well I think he got elected on personality rather than policies so that makes sense.. I liked him better as a presenter than a politician. Jacob Rees Mogg was surprisingly likeable as a panelist too. I like that they actually bring on people with opposing opinions but I honestly dont understand why they agree to do the show.
I would love to see the unedited tape of this episode. You have Jimmy Carr who can rip you apart 20 different ways before you know it, Paul who is very good at subtle and not so subtle attacks, even Ian was ripping into her.
What? She was witty as a firecracker and handed the perennially smug Hislop his hat and reduced a less and less engaged but still self-approving Merton to phoning in desperate eye rolls! I'm no tory, but credit where it is due. The only one to give her a challenge was Carr. I respect Merton and Hislop's cleverness, but they had it coming. They mercilessly mock who they don't approve of, even if it's just because they think they ought not to. You don't have to support her., she was surprisingly funny!
@@editor4958 We really cannot have watched the same episode. You think THAT was funny? Blimey. Anything even remotely funny said by her was in the autocue bits anyway, so it's not her words. It's pretty telling that the only time she properly laughed was when Jimmy joked about poorly-paid Eastern European labourers
Wow someone agrees! That was loads of fun. I don't agree with the politics personally but She was witty as a firecracker though and handed the perennially smug Hislop his hat and reduced a less and less engaged but still self-approving Merton to phoning in desperate eye rolls! its like she was the knuckles rapping teacher who traumatized everyone at school and it took half the episode for the guys to remember they were all adults now 😂 you could see their childhood responses each rise up at first though lol
I feel like Jimmy always has some replies locked and loaded, like how when a host prompted Paul to "go higher" with a number and Paul just repeated his answer but raised the pitch of his voice lol. I think Jimmy keeps some replies to common phrases ready to go. And that might make it sound like I'm simplifying his comedy - far from it. Keeping all that stuff straight in your head and knowing when to use it is a great skill. Imo Jimmy is really consistent with his humor, his pacing and tone, and honestly, if I was 1/8th as funny I'd feel blessed beyond reason.
This episode would've been a flaming disaster without Jimmy, though Ian and Paul got in a few good ones. The Carr-Widdecombe duel alone is worth the watch.
I teach part-time in a middle school, and Jimmy Carr is the kind of student I dread. He's cocky and outspoken, charming, defiant, and he has no filter. It's not his behavior, but I think you can relate to the effect a kid like that can have on the rest of the class. (I'm not a proper teacher, just after-school music classes. Maybe you're better with kids like that than I am.)
today on ReWatch : Shreds of Widdecombe , the eye roll to god was her breaking point. congrats to Paul for finally getting her. Jimmy Carr was very close. you'd have thought the 'bag puss' comment would have been it.
WTF are you talking about? The only reaction at all was with Carr. He took the moment as it was and played with it. Hislop and Merton clearly were surprised that their regular entitlement to smugly mock the guest was denied by actual wit! Screw tories but those two needed a dose of their own medicine. She was funny.
You know when something is so bad that you are probably gonna watch it again? So bad that you never wwant to see it repeated? My mind keep on wrapping around who booked her? What their general sense of humour like? Such a wonderful episode, for all the wrong reasons!
OMG!!!! Jimmy Carr MVP!!! Anne has a quickfire acerbic comeback handy but her performance was still stock insufferable Widdicome. At the 12 minute mark, I paused the show and said to my gf, "She's never coming back on this show. She's no match for Jimmy and he knows blood is in the water, he's all game on!" My gf who was not as familiar with Jimmy as I am, said, "What do you mean?" I told her just watch, "He's going to slice and dice her." Did he ever!!! She held up pretty well, all in all. I am impressed.
oh man this show would have flopped so hard if jimmy weren't the beautiful sadist he is. ian and paul were having none of it!!! too funny to watch a train wreck like this
Why won’t she come back? In later episodes I’ve heard them mention several times that she refuses to do the show again after how Jimmy treated her… But you can plainly hear her laughing her ass off like she’s really enjoying it, and I think she’s fucking hilarious. I have no idea about her politics … I’m an American and I can hardly understand your politics over there…so maybe she’s crazy? but she’s absolutely brilliant and cut out to be a host on these shows. She’s great.

For all the criticism, I think she holds her own in her own way. I can't stand her politics, but she's not an idiot--it's just that her style doesn't match with the kind of humor of people like Carr, and since Carr's style is the one that tends to be favored on a show like this, she comes off looking the worst. When you watch a Brian Blessed episode, it's kind of the same--his style is completely different, and it *should* be a train wreck (and kind of is), but he makes it work by completely ignoring the "rules" of the show and bellowing over any objections.
In a way? I don't agree, I was amazed at how funny she was! There was wit there. I don't agree with tory politics but I also don't always agree with Hislop's smug self righteousness or Merton's interrupt and mock everything, collect check stencil. I found it great fun to see them get a dose of their own cod liver oil. Unlike them, Carr did not seem to come in thinking "I'm entitled to gun her down" rather, reacted to who she was being, instead of who she is supposed to be and as a result did not look petty, just the rather vapid fellow he likes to portray!
He never found his footing with Anne. Some experience in standup, dealing with hecklers, would have really help him here. Jimmy was locked and loaded the second he knew what's up. Not just a natural, but a seasoned one. He ceased the night.
Clearly. I guess is why she was able to laughably PWN a typically smug Hislop, and Merton. I think they were not prepared for her to have a guest with wit. I love 'em but it's about time that lazy entitlement got challenged.
When do you suppose was the moment that Jimmy decided he was going to absolutely ruin Ann? And how long did it take him to get his commendation for doing so?
I’ve seen Anne Widdicome on a more recent program where they were doing some historical reenactment and she was belligerent and bossy to others. What a miserable person.
With her terrible teeth, wooden manner and moaning voice, Ann Widdecombe plays into every single stereotype of the British that we have here in the U.S. This one was brilliant and I loved it.
