I Saw Three Versions of Gemini Man In One Day: A 60 FPS Vlog

  • Clickbait Title: Two Will Smiths? You Won't Believe What Happens Next!
I had to go home and take a nap in between viewings because the 3D HF DBOX UltraAVX Experience™ was just that draining.
Presented in 60fps because I've fallen victim to my own weird quirks of replicating carious elements of a film in the videos I make about those films. In the last two days I've had a bigger existential crisis about the narrative value of HFR than the characters had about being clones/cloned. I broadly agree with the sentiment that audiences can and will acclimate to HFR as they watch more of it, but that's definitely never going to happen if it all looks like this. I can settle in and feel comfortable and normal watching HFR footage of my own creation, like this vlog, but Gemini Man resisted that at every turn. Everything looked bad, sped up, and cheap. Ang Lee seems to have decided that a "real" explosion looks like a firework, with a bunch of sparks in the mix, because sparks are really easy for the brain to track in HFR, so they look neat. But I couldn't ever get past it looking "neat". It was like watching stock footage or a tech demo for two hours. There's no attempt at using the frame rate to enhance the emotional state, it's just "turn it up to 11 and leave it there" which makes the experience just tiring.

When I was in South Korea I went on a "Ride" that used seats like those 4dx rigs. The "Tickler" was a piece of rope with a knot tied in the end. During the climatic finish of the ride, a huge gust of air was blown out from underneath the chair, and every single male on the ride got racked in the 'nads with a knotted rope.
Great experience, would love to spend 30+ dollars to revisit.

Yeah, it's basically the same reason Henry Cavil's lips look rubbery and fake in all of the reshoots for Justice League. It's incredibly difficult to reproduce authentic looking face movements, so even small issues really stand out, which is exacerbated by the high frame rate/high resolution that already makes flaws more noticeable

    • @daylilyanimation8939
      @daylilyanimation8939 4 года назад +20

It's because actual human upper lips aren't muscularly controlled except by moving other muscles. Like scrucnhing up your nose for example. They made a mistake in that they treated the upper lip like the lower lip where it can move independently, which made it just seem off. Though the mustache also may have had something to do with it.

So, it's another Will Smith movie? Because I struggle to think of a modern Will Smith movie where it wasn't either about his relationship with his character's children, or where the movie goes out of its way to establish his character as a father, who may or may not be in a relationship with the mother. Pursuit of Happiness, Suicide Squad, Bright, After Earth. Even now, when it's not a literal offspring but a clone, he still makes it about fatherhood.

Even tho I appreciate the hobbit films -even if they are flawed, I definitely cannot imagine watching them in any other way than blu-ray/dvd. Heck I already feel, even with that format that some image look a bit too much like some nature documentary than a lord of the ring film. And then there's the ironic choice of adding bloom to the image - and I love bloom as an effect honestly but combined with the hyper detailed digital photography it doesn't feel magical, it just feels like a big clash.
Just to be clear digital photography can be awesome and has a lot of advantages over film: digital camera allows more control over the overall image and it's look in post production, and most importantly they require less light. This is especially useful if you use natural lighting like the revenant.
Dune used the various advantages to amazing effect but they actually printed it onto film just to soften the image a bit.
And yeah I'd argue imitating the feel of film while still using the advantages of digital cameras is a good method for certain type of films. I mean you don't have to go as far as printing the footage, Mandy and Knives Out proved you can get a great film look with entirely digital tools, but you get my point. Moving a bit away from how stuff look IRL allows for a deeper immersion in theses world.

I feel like using those effects on a movie that could stand alone like Gemini man would be distracting rather than immersive. I feel like it is better suited for a ride because those effects are more for entertainment value than storytelling. 4D also seems kind of campy, like a live showing of rocky horror picture show or the room.

The atmosphere is gone, the immersion of being in a movie is gone, and have you noticed how the acting and line delivery always seems flat compared to how it is in the movie?

In many games, high frame rates are needed to give players just a split-second longer to register cues and react to them. It's arguable how much of a difference the gap between 60 and 30 FPS makes, but dropping even a bit below 30 FPS can be a _big_ problem.

Man this is interesting to me, and I get your frustration.
So I come from a literary theory background, and while we share some language and perhaps a commonality of purpose, I can say that I am an ingenue when it comes to FILM theory. I’d totally like to thank you and Ms. Ellis to providing an on ramp for this that is relatable.
So yeah, frame rate and how it might contribute to the language is a mind blower. I get that the idea of cinema verity and how much cinema as a language is actually representational is film theory 101, but I must confess, I’ve always had a default position that visual media is REPRESENTATIONAL, know, a nuance I should of as a lit critic picked up on.
So, OK, the high frame rate makes it hyper real, thus less a representation, more difficult to manipulate. So, reading a graphic novel, I recognize this is a fiction. Because it is loosely relatable, it allows me to be more forgiving of fantasy, and allowing suspensions of disbelief.
So we draw a linear relationship to this, perhaps, which I’d accept continently. I allow movies with more stylized cinematography innately more room to be fiction than movies whose visual language suggests more reality.
So, perhaps Ang Lee was a poor choice to do this?
I dunno. I get your frustration here.
I really enjoyed how you dealt with the idea of editing, and some of the language of that, through Suicide Squad. I actually was looking forward to that movie, and was disappointed. However, your bit on how poorly it was edited articulated a bunch of why.
I saw a version of Gemini man was AWFUL
I suspect though frame rate wasn’t the PRIMARY flaw.
Anyway, thanks for your thoughtful presentations.

He watches horrible movies (3 times) so that we don't have to.
I think the main problem with this film is THE SCRIPT, the frame rate is, in my opinion a gimmick to hide just how godawful the writing is. Isn't Ang Lee powerful enough to demand another rewrite?

This movie moves and feels more like a tech demo than an actual attempt to make a great piece of cinema so it's no surprise the script is weak.

Technofetish Director : l will construct a fiction indistinguishable from reality for the audience to consume !!
Media Critic : No you doofus, the audience constructs the fiction in their heads using the signs and signifier negotiated between you the audience and the tradition of the art. Remove the signs ,like for instance frame rate, and you’ll have difficulty convincing the audience to construct the fiction.

To complicate matters high frame doesn't remove the signs but resembles the signs of a different medium... Live Television. So you clue in the viewer into another medium where all the low value shows (soap operas) use the higher frame rate and the prestige shows (scripted programs) used lower frame rates and pulldown.

@@adrianinha19 if this isn't a joke, Folding Ideas' first video was about those concepts. I believe they're either from "the selfish Gene" the first book to mention memes in a way similar to how we currently understand them, or it was another book on them. But people all across the internet tend to bring it up when they want to talk about memes or a meme in a more academic way.

This Vlog shows the true potential of 60fps. I feel like you were in the room with me, and I could feel just how terrible the movie was. Next, I want to see a 60fps audience reaction video of Michael Bay watching Gemini Man.

  • @CaitieLou

I remember in interviews from when The Hobbit in 60fps came out, they talked about how they had to do a lot of props differently from how they'd normally be done so they look good in 60fps. Like usually the weapons actors carry on their person in scenes where they aren't in use are made out of rubber or some other cheap, light material. But in 60fps the wobble of rubber weapons was more visible, so they couldn't do that. It was also the reason they couldn't re-use a lot of the miniatures, sets, and props that had been saved from the LotR films--they just didn't hold up at that higher frame rate.
