  • Justice League isn't good, but I didn't hate it. If you want a bottom line, that's it, but if you watch the video I go into a lot more detail. Because I couldn't take notes in the theatre there's a bunch I forgot, like a completely misplaced scene near the start where Batman's beard disappears, a sequence set to Icky Thump that seems to have been left in purely because they already paid the licensing fee, how Steppenwolf looks like he's been lifted from a Dragon Age: Origins cutscene, and Cyborg's uniformly weird, floaty movements that aren't strange enough to feel intentionally alien nor normal enough to feel natural.

    They should have put the mustache in the film. Just, Superman has a mustache now. His resurrection gave him facial hair out of nowhere. No real explanation. Would make it infinitely better.

      Ersanven It depends on what scenes they needed to reshoot. It wouldn’t work for him to have a mustache disappear and reappear.

      Maybe they could say his hair kept growing after his death (which is actually not true), and Flash (perhaps as a prank) decided to give the man a mustache.

    My favourite part is when they first fight Steppenwolf and all the league members are doing their thing: Cyborg and Aquaman are fighting heaps of parademons, The Flash is saving people, Wonder Woman is soloing Steppenwolf and then Batman spends the entire scene fighting one parademon and he’s trying his best but apparently being rich isn’t good enough.

      purpleunicorn12 real shit batman was so disappointing in this movie. He had barely any fight scenes and in the few he did have, they were terrible. The bruce wayne aspect was boring as well. Its really too bad because i fucking loved his portrayal in BvS, especially the warehouse fight.

      purpleunicorn12 compare that to how awesome and also relevant Batman was in the Doomsday scene lmao- whatever you might think of the scene it looked Viking awesome and mysterious /decandent like Batman and he fired that Kryp. Grenade at doomsday lmao Whedon. have you seen Zack Snyder's one pic. He Vero' of an anti- dementor gun, I mean can you imagine him ever shooting Batman stiffly coming down on that fucking string gun after the rest of the league just jumped the gate, and shooting him in broad daylight - even on the poster, what were they thinking-- or when Superman fucking slapped him lmao. Or when he picked him up by his cowl and made it look all plastic I mean what an idiot. Atleast Snyder's films look good enough to be called films. Avengers was good you know in its way- but.....

      Krypt. Grenade being softened blow or whatever. Also I mean when he came down on the string bit by bit storytelling and it would have been inconsistent but he should have just been inside waiting in the dark and even cheesy and not exactly written like this but Aquaman could say 'where did you come from' and he just turns and swishes his cape and walks in Nolan firm image of character bcos he's a professional, Snyder's fucking awese- visionary imo. Whedon..... oh well Avengers is good you know

    All the Wonder Woman upskirt shots is DEFINITELY Snyder's movie because my gosh was it distracting, this includes the fact that every outfit she wore had to bear her breasts or outline her butt. I was getting Sucker Punch flashbacks. This is a total 180 to how she was shot in this movie compared to her solo movie and its sad. The moment the camera was uncomfortably close to her crotch in her FIRST scene, I knew this was going to be bad.
    After the movie ended the guy sitting behind me just groaned "I shouldn't have watched Thor Ragnarok before this, I cant enjoy this". This man wished he didn't see a better movie because it made this one look awful and its fucking hilarious!

    Honestly, going back to these reviews is so interesting, now that we have a clearer idea of what was originally Snyder's and what was Whedon's. Like, a lot of the painful Barry stuff was Snyder's all along! Whereas the Lois and Martha scene at the Daily Planet was Whedon's. The ressurection of Superman is more or less the same in both versions...

    • @matthewmuir8884
      @matthewmuir8884 3 года назад +19

      Indeed, it is interesting. For instance, everyone really did think that the opening was Snyder's doing, despite the opening included "Directed by Joss Whedon" over a still image of a homeless man with a sign that reads, "I tried" (the meaning of which is now very obvious). But now we know that it was Whedon's. My biggest takeaway from that realization was, "Wait a minute; he was able to convincingly imitate Snyder's directing style all along? Not that I'm complaining."

IF the entire conversation had been ONLY "I don't do battle" -- "Save one" ala Wanda and Clint's "Walk out that door and you're an Avengers" convo, and placed BEFORE Steppenwolf was CHOKING PEOPLE, it would have been perfect. As it was, Steppenwolf could have killed a couple people while the Flash was having a "Who's on first?" gag scene with Batman.

    I saw it with my father and when leaving the cinema it took us a really long time to even ask what we thought about the movie. Like we were both afraid that we were gonna have different takes. Turns out we didn't, we both thought it was... ok. Not good. Not bad, just... ok? But we both agreed the first hour was so incredibly tedious we almost fell asleep. That was easily the most Snyderish part of the movie.
    On a different note, if you haven't seen BvS and go straight into this, like my dad did, the movie portrays it like Batman flat out killed Superman himself. Very few allusions to Doomsday, one or two throwaway lines that Lex Luthor was in it and then Superman comes back all growly: "You couldn't let me live. You couldn't let me die." It's entirely plausible to think Batman killed Superman on that basis.

      @matthewmuir8884 3 года назад +17

      @@_V.Va_ Honestly, while the theatrical version is still garbage, the Snyder Cut gave me a newfound appreciation for it. For instance, I disliked the bank scene when I first saw it, but then I saw how Snyder had it that Wonder Woman spattered the walls with the blood and brains of the bad guys and blew up a huge portion of the bank herself; likely killing a number of cops outside, I like that the theatrical version got rid of both the blood and the explosions.
      Similarly, one of the few scenes I liked when I saw the theatrical version was the one where Wonder Woman sees Batman's bruises and dislocated shoulder and tells him, "You can't keep doing this forever", leading Batman to admit, "I can barely keep doing it now." It was a really nice character moment and, guess what; it was added for the theatrical version; it was not in the Snyder Cut, because the Snyder Cut seems to think Batman's an invincible brute.

    I thought the scene where the fastest man in the world and an otherworldly cyborg with unexplainable, otherworldly technology took what seemed to be an hour or more digging up Clark's dead body, which thankfully hadn't rotted or even remotely discolored, was amazing!!
    This might be a trivial scene in the grand scheme of things but I don't see how two individuals with the powers of gods would break out a shovel and spend actual human time digging up a dead body. So much for security at the cemetery, some cameras or at least a human sentry or drone patrolling the grounds for possible grave robbers. But again it speaks to how messy and sloppy and ill-conceived this film and franchise are.
    Some may say that the scene with Steve Rogers and Tony Stark chopping wood was a bit silly but clearly the point was for the team to slow down and take time to figure out their next move. Then seeing Steve rip apart a log like it was paper conveys that he had the power to do more but chose not to for the sake of giving him a menial task to take his mind off the carnage that was about to ensue. I get the sense that Whedon wanted a similar wood chopping scene for Flash and Cyborg but it just doesn't work in this context.
    I eagerly await your review once the movie has been released on video and you can dissect it with more detail and call out specific scenes using actual footage instead of just talking about it.

      I know this comment is three years old, but The Flash says during the scene that they could dig it up in a nanosecond, but they both feel uncomfortable digging up the body of a fallen hero. Incidentally, that explanation was added in the reshoots; the Snyder Cut leaves out the explanation and just has The Flash point out that they could dig it up in a nanosecond.

Personally, I've enjoyed it a lot because it felt like it both let go and embraced superhero stereotypes, but unlike Age of Ultron or Civil War is doesn't bemoan it over and over, it just has fun with it. I think it’s a fun flick but overall the two plots of Hela vs Planet Hulk have nothing to do with each other and don’t mesh. It doesn’t help either that there’s pretty much nothing about Hela that’s interesting, she’s mostly reduced to a woman scorn which is dumb, at least Cate Blanchett had fun in the role. Ragnarok should’ve been a Planet Hulk movie exclusively and dropped the Hela storyline altogether for a future movie so they could actually pay some attention to it.

      Waititi's humor was amazing to me! It felt like the movie could joke while also taking itself seriously in the right moments. They barely use bathos (when a serious moment is cut by a comedic one), instead having a lot of comedic moments and some serious scenes. Felt great fir me and I strongly disagree with the idea that the jokes were forced, but I can comprehend people who didn't vibe with it for any reason.

    I feel that the big problem with the DCEU (besides editing) is the mythology. The MCU built Iron Man from the ground up, and then built the worlds mythology from that through to Avengers and beyond. Whereas the DCEU seems to use the preconceived mythology from the public conception of the characters. This would probably have worked if they had kept to the well known characterisations from the comics, but instead they decided to changed what Superman was, without building the mythology around this new character. So in Justice League everyone is losing their heads over their beacon of hope being gone, yet he wasn't ever held up as that beacon in the previous 2 movies. Bruce says the big reason to bring him back is because Clark is more human than him; This works great in the comics but here he barely even met Superman, let alone Clark, and for like 2 mins. We just kind of have to assume Superman was a nice guy because people say he is, but he is never shown to actually want to help people. I guess this is why Wonder Woman actually worked. The first act is setting up her mythology, and we see her express and confront her views on the world, and the world's view of her.

    @1080TJ 6 лет назад +405

    Just saw it. It's not a clusterfuck on the level of BvS or Suicide Squad. It's just... so meh. Dull, kinda cheesy, a few good moments sprinkled throughout. Generic plot, effects weren't great (Henry Cavill's CG moustache removal in one scene - holy shit his face looked so bizarre I laughed harder than at any of Flash's jokes). Biggest complaint would be Steppenwolf - second DC movie this year and the second superhero movie THIS MONTH where the villain design is "big CGI monster man with horns". His plot is to find the McGuffin and take over the world with his army of cannon fodder minions because he's mean I guess. When he gets defeated at the end he actually says shit like "no, that's not possible!" Almost felt like a parody of poorly written villains. Also this movie had like three different opening scenes, four if you count the credits sequence.
    It was just such a nothing movie. Completely forgettable, unambitious and inoffensive - Snyder's other two DC films, flawed as they were, certainly weren't that. It's a shame. This is the fucking Justice League. Fans deserve better.
    4/10 on my scale
    Spoilers for the post credits scene - Eisenluthor is back because I guess Warner Bros hates us and now he's teaming up with Deathstroke. They finally gave him the bald head and the suit and he looks like a kid playing dress up. If he's gonna be in Gareth Evans's Deathstroke movie... well, there goes my excitement for that. Ugh.

Contrast this with the sea of hyperbolic praise given in the comments sections of the trailers, which I highly suspect are filled with fake comments seeded by WB.
    Personally, I have no intention of "going easy" on the DC movies. Especially since, with Wonder Woman, they showed that they _are_ capable of making a decent and likable movie (if only WW had a better scene in place of the big-bad-guy fight it would have been genuinely *good* as a movie). Mulch Butler so, disclaimer: I have not seen the movie, I’ve only watched a couple reviews, but it seems to me that compared to the other DCEU movies, it’s reasonably competent and people really want the franchise to succeed despite its many failures, so they don’t say “it’s terrible” they say “it’s not that bad” and feel hopeful despite themselves. That’s my theory anyway.

    • @jessielefey
      @jessielefey 6 лет назад +58

      Mulch Butler I don't think they're afraid, it's more about expectations.
      Everyone was braced for it to be Suicide Squad again. It's not, it's low mediocre not Fan4stic. So everyone is pleasantly surprised.
      A Marvel movie, or even a Fox Xmen movie couldn't get away with this, because we've got expectations for them. But DC movies at this point are the disappointment child; "yeah, he dropped out, but at least he hasn't gotten arrested again..."

      I feel like I covered this in the vlog, during my summary at the end, but the short of it is that the movie ends on its strongest foot, which colours the way that viewers mentally frame the movie. It's not great, but I didn't leave the theatre angry. It is, objectively, riddled with problems, but it's at least coherent and feels like it's focused on a singular comprehensible plot. I wouldn't recommend it, but if you're basically going to see it anyway because friends/family/whatever then it's passable.
      Also I feel like a lot of YT critics are deliberately using "damning with faint praise" titles (as I did) due to the very specific culture of toxic fans that have arisen around the DCEU.

      George Daugherty Yup I guess now I know what it feels like to watch a workprint cut of a movie.

    Snyder apparantly wanted superman to be evil throughout, even still being evil at the end. Even with the weird face, Cavill's superman finally got good, if fans of dc comics thank whedon for anything, it should be for that.

      yep, at least BvS is memorable for how bad it is, this just sounds like a nothing movie that will be forgotten by the release of Star Wars

    I find it interesting that this is the second time (almost in a row) that this studio is jumping to an ensemble without laying proper groundwork OR doing ensemble right. And (semi spoiler I guess kinda?) there's indications they're planning to do it AGAIN. I know they're playing catch-up but there are right ways to present ensembles, and they are not doing those ways.
    My friends and I were talking about it, and the biggest issue is that these characters were insufficiently distinct. Everyone was punchy stabby except Superman who also had freezebreath and eyebeams; and Flash for Search & Rescue. They never really gave each character a proper moment in their element, bringing their own special something to the effort. Hell, they let Aquaman get Worfed when Steppenwolf stole the Atlantean motherbox. That was really fucking stupid.
    Anyway... all of that said, I feel like they're trying to course-correct, and they had to do this one as a write-off so that moving forward they can give the characters the films they deserve. I hope that's the case, because I really want to see good DC movies because I love these characters.
    Just don't make me watch Batfleck do the Batusi.

    If you've seen no DC movies and have zero context for the term 'motherbox', the name is grounds for endless and very concerning speculation.

      Just like Suicide Squad , he doesn't just say he hated it or loved it, there's a grey area you know, i mean i enjoy the fast and furious movies, they're still pretty bad though

    No wonder it feels eerie watching Superman. I think I kinda like the uncanny effect... coz he just raised from the dead so I think the unsettling feeling of him in the movie. It kinda works in this movie. but.. that's just my personal feel
