I got to see him with my late dad one of those miracle things. I have a picture with him! He was my dad's fave and just showed up at a bar in the middle of nowhere.
Been posting on Facebook Flatlander group or solo work videos, and I went looking for a video of this tune - deeming it perhaps Ely's supreme poetic achievement, just as Dallas is Gillmore's and Just A Wave, Not the Water Butch Hancocks' - and was delighted to find such a great performance with a terrifically moving, both funny and tragic, introduction. Thanks for the gift, one that keeps on giving as I've posted it to 100 plus folks, few of whom know Ely or the Flatlanders.
@JamieLMacD Great comment, Jamie. RNL is the greatest Ely supporter you could ever imagine and a great spirit as well. We are all blessed she can travel, lives here in Texas with good Ely access, and a great camera. We should probably put together a fund and send her on the road to insure we preserve as many performances as possible. I suspect she would agree.

This is a faboulous song.
Thanks for this, very cool. I've been a fan of Ely since he appeared with the Clash. Seen him a few times, he's a great one.

Margo Cilker does a lovely version of this song of Joe's.
