This is without a doubt THE BEST opening number of a B'way musical EVER!
I saw this show on B'way a few times, and witnessed something I'd never seen at a B'way show. Before this number was half over, most of the audience was on their feet, dancing, clapping hands, out in the aisles dancing. I couldn't resist. I did the same thing. It was the most incredible theatre experience!! If they had rung the curtain down after this one number, I would have still felt that I got my money's worth. Amazing number!

I, unfortunately, did NOT see it on B'way, but I agree - I think it's one of the greatest numbers in the annals of musical theatre - the movements are so CHURCH! Amazing!

Saw this show on Broadway in 1970 and it remains, to me, the most energetic opening number I have ever seen. I saw my first Broadway show at nine. I'm now 71 and I still love it.

Dad was a substitute musician in the show in 1970-71 and the album played regularly in our home, when I was three and four I remember spinning around to the music so fast I would fall over dizzy by the end… Never saw it on stage until I found a RUclips clip of the Tony awards ceremony when they won. Truly one of the best musicals, I love it even though it brings tears to my eyes now, truly. I have no idea how I did not hear this was televised in 1981 - ?
I would've thought I would've watched it as would my whole family.

When teaching in NJ, years ago, I took at least two classes to see "Purlie" on Broadway. I purposely walked them from Port Authority to the theatre through what was, but has since been cleaned up, the under belly of NY. Always thought it was my best lesson plan. And experiencing Melba Moore's "I Got Love" was "Got Lovely."

In my short career in Dinner Theatre the 2 most exciting things to me was being in The "Sit Down Your Rocking the Boat" number in Guys and Dolls and this number "Walk him Up the Stairs" from Purly. Such an exciting number. It starts a little slow but boy does it get going. Black Gospel as written & performed for Broadway.

We used to do this as our second-half opening number at the Gran' Crystal Palace Dinner Theatre in Dallas, Texas; this would have been 40 years ago or more.It helped that we had a bunch of great sopranos capable of singing those high C's like this ensemble does. The wonderful mezzo-soprano Kimberly Bjork would absolutely tear up the carpet on the opening solo, singing two octaves in chest voice up to a high G (that's the one above the staff) and then throwing in a couple of high B-flats. One of the best voices I ever heard. I would do the little baritone "drowning sinner" bit. Kim, wherever you are I hope you see this and that you are well, and I send my kind regards. George
