I found the “””love of my life”””” like 7 times in my teens. Real love is not about feelings but commitment. And sacrifice for the good of the loved one.
I agree with it and I find it an interesting view. But you should have feelings too right? Otherwise you could literally marry anyone. You should have feelings and atraction I guess
I remember my mom saying, "You don't really love him" a few times when I was around her age. Now when I hear teenage girls bawling about some dude they were with for like two weeks, I can't help but think, "Yep. I remember thinking like that." Kids just think they have things figured out at that age and they don't realize how much growing they still have to do.
i wish my mom said that to me because i am 18 now and when i was 17 i liked a guy and cried about him and my mom kept asking me if i was in love with him for she thought it was love and i was the one who was mature about it and knew it was just a teenage crush and that the thing that made me get over him and know it was absurd
@@mija1570 you can love at that age tho. I met my husband at 12 years old. Love is a commitment. I just happened to find someone who respected my values and goals at a young age. We helped each other grow and as we became adults we stayed committed and we didn’t have to do anything alone.
His analysis of love as sacrifice and work, and how this song is actually more about self love and how she feels than true love is so spot on. I never thought of it that way
I got broken up with two months ago (and funnily enough, "it took him two weeks to go off and date" his ex again) Matt's criticism of teenage "love" is so refreshing. Excited for college, and I'm waiting for whoever God has got for me.
My parents told me I was too mentally ill to learn to drive around 16-17 ish and didn’t consider teaching me until I was 18. So the way you were like, “why is this girl crying while driving? She’s gonna get killed?” It literally just made me rethink everything I was told in my teens haha.
My parents said the same thing I’m 30 years old now with two DUIs. Granted, I was an alcoholic for 15 years but parents do know best LOL I think it’s crazy that 15 year olds can get licenses honestly looking back.
Everything Matt said is what I realized when I was like 13, 14 watching my older cousins cry every other month over some guy who broke their heart or cheated on them or yelled at them. It was all so dumb and pointless and for each guy they acted like he was the one their superhero the best man in the world until no. And i watched how each relationship that ended made them meaner, bitter, inwardly desperate for attention but outwardly trying to act like they don’t give a crap. The most meaningful aspect of their relationship was grinding up against each other or laughing hysterically over some movie which is fine but for what? I honestly decided that the only time i would consider guys was when i was ready to be married and in a committed relationship. Thankfully i had a great relationship with my dad we talked and bonded all the time and he helped me a lot. I married at 23 to a 29year old and it’s been almost 8 years, 3 kids (another on the way) and I couldn’t feel more blessed and grateful.
First of all you made that sound like you were banging your dad in your teen years that’s weird…. Second of all I’m glad you found someone and it worked out.… lastly, and most importantly, I think, going through pointless relationships as a teenager and filling those emotions is a good thing, and I think all teens should experience it and laugh at it later in life.. so you didn’t miss out by being so cynical as a teenager. where it gets wrong and sad is when teenagers commit suicide over young love otherwise it’s good to feel those irrational feelings and be a crazy teenager. It’s a fleeting moment in time that you eventually miss.
What this song should teach you is that modern popular music is rubbish. It is pure electronic artificial production. The "artist" cannot actually even sing the song as it is pure artificial.
“You shouldn’t date till you’re 23” “I’ve just decided” 🤣 this guy is amazing. But seriously I love how it’s like he’s talking directly to Olivia in this. It’s so entertaining.
As a writer in my free time I totally get this. I've had characters who met her soulmate when she was 13/14. They then dated for 5/6 years, got married at age 19, had three kids by the age of 21, and they lived happily ever after until the husband tragically died when he was 35. See the difference is, is that when he died, the characters heartbreak was real, you could feel it and understand more then a dumb pop song. As a writer I strive to envision love exactly as Matt describes it. I've had two characters go through heartbreak and it is more powerful because you know the other part of the relationship and you've seen the characters grow. Thanks Matt for going out and sharing this important point and story with the world, as I feel that people should hear it.
I'm not old enough to date but when I am no way I'm wasting my time with that. I'm gonna give it some time but climb trees and do random useless stuff while I'm still young enough
@@Noemieorokia I am unsure about French, but in English there is something called a double negative. It is a grammatical error as it is usually not the speaker's intention. As an example, "I do not want nothing." Logically what is being said is I want something, because the word not is a negative, which negates the negative nothing. However, the speaker usually is not intending to mean that. Another example would be, "We don't need no education." In that case not is a negative as is no. This indicates (perhaps ironically or appropriately) that education is needed. It is also possible to think of it like in mathematics where subtracting a negative number is the equivalent of adding a positive number.
Dude she was 17 years old teenager when she wrote that song all by herself. That’s how a teenager feels emotions, intensely like it’s the end of the world. Instead of shaming a young musician pay attention to how well crafted lyrics she was able to write at that age. Also artist tend to take inspiration from personal life, the song is not outright lyric by lyric about her boyfriend. It’s a freaking song. Calm down.
My daughter was listening to this song and told me the real back story. This was Rodrigo's first album which she recorded because her real life boy friend broke up with her when he realized he was gay. This generation is totally screwed up.
I have 2 teen daughters (and also teen sons) and none of us have ever heard this 🤣 I guess we are too busy sitting around our giant refrigerator sized radio listening to murder mysteries too.
I think it’s kind of ridiculous that people don’t have lifelong friends. I’ve known 3 of my best friends since I was 7. At 16, your friendships should definitely matter
I am an old guy. But, seemingly all pop music is about people learning how to process their emotions and become emotionally mature. BTW it's 1932 in my life as well.
Many people experience love three times in their lives. The first phase is “puppy love” that isn’t really love, but infatuation. This song perfectly sums up that heart break after your first “love” you do feel like you’ll love them forever, but you move on, and eventually find the right person down the road
Dude, please do this more often, you genuinely had me laughing out loud. As a 33 y/o man, I can relate with the cynicism you approach the trivialities of teenage broken heart.
Teens deserve to be taken seriously. Part of the reason they are the way they are is bc ppl are so dismissive of them. If we did take them srsly earlier we wouldn't be where we are w them rn.
@@mikahong I think you make a good point. While we know it doesn't "matter" in the grand scheme, it does matter in the moment, and validation is important. I've had to learn to get better at it and I still generally suck at it, but have also been on the receiving end of zero validation for good portions of life. Reminds me of a Sarah Dawn Moore video where they asked a bunch of men who they would call if they really needed someone to talk to. Every man said "no one," or some version of that. That starts in teen years by not being listened to.
Matt , I’m in my sixties and when I heard this song on the radio I immediately loved it. It took me back to all the drama of my adolescent. When every relationship felt like life or death and all the heartbreak that followed a break up. It was fun to reminisce and be thankful that I didn’t end up with any of those guys that I thought I’d never get over. Loved your take on the song and enjoyed a good laugh along with you. Here’s a ❤️ even though I know you hate emojis.
Hi, Deb! :) I’m not quite in my 60s yet, still a college kid, but your comment made me smile. It’s already so easy to see how all of the high school drama, even though it feels SO big at the time, absolutely doesn’t matter in the long run. I look forward to when I’m in my 60s and I can look back and reminisce, too. Have a great day :)

I thought she was singing about her best friend or boyfriend who had died and was so excited for the depth…and then it turned out to be just superficial
“No relationship you have at 16 will mean anything.” Tell that to my wife. We got together when she was 16 and I was 18. That was 15 years ago and 2 kids ago. Never once split up for any length of time.
Why has no one pointed out that he hasn't even split up with her or cheated on her? She drove to his house and he wasn't in. That's it. Everything else is her making assumptions
4:56 “you know, your dumb boyfriend you met in October, broke up with you after thanksgiving. Give me a break. Snap out of it. You’re embarrassing yourself” 😂😂
Thank you! Someone said it, " I can't take the relationship struggles seriously of someone at this age." Finally, I'm not the only one that thinks teenage dating is odd.
I know people who dated that young and got married and now have kids and are happy together so I don’t find it odd. In fact among a lot of conservative/Christian circles that’s kind of the norm. I agree with another commenter above, what I find odd is the idea that at 16 if you don’t have a boyfriend you’re some kind of failure. I guess I must be the biggest failure then because I’m 25 and I still don’t have a boyfriend 🤣
Why is teen dating odd tho? That’s how I met my husband. Met when we were 12 years old and have been together since we were 14. We’ve had our ups and downs and even spent our first year of university long distance but we were able to persist together. Love is a commitment and we just happened to find each other and we respected each other’s values and had the same goals.
Matt really strikes a chord with teenage depression. One of the biggest tragedies in life is when a teen commits suicide over a problem that will be completely gone in a year.
I'm 18 and I can't take her seriously either. Maybe that's because I know most of us have no clue what love is at this age. I for one have never had a serious relationship with anyone. Can't imagine doing that, meanwhile I haven't even found myself yet.
I just asked my 13 year old daughter if she’d ever heard this song, on our way to her vocal lesson. “Of course. Good song right?!” Me: “Here, check this out”. We listened to this video on our way. She laughed her ass off. “Good, now go learn to sing just like her and we’ll work on more realistic lyrics for your age group when we get home”. My daughter may end up being the first satirical pop singer. That’s my goal anyway.
For all the comments about him being “ harsh” are completely missing the sarcasm. Watch more of his videos- he’s funny as fuck and I come here to laugh most of the time.
This is all a joke. We all were teenagers once, and remember the teen angst and hormones flowing... this video is for older people to laugh and remember that not for you guys to think we’re making fun of you.
When it happens for the first time, to a young person, it does feel like the end of the world. This is why I think teens are too young to date and why it's important for them to have adults that will point out the truth to them. I think she's just expressing her emotions raw from that moment.
The Skeletor inserts had me thinking of The Critical Drinker. I half expected you to utter, “nah, it’ll be fine” when you’re addressing the singer’s angst.
DC Talk did a song back in the 1990s called "Luv is a verb". Whether someone is religious or not, I think 1 Cor 13:4-8 is a perfect description of what real love is. You can't say "I love you" until you're willing to sacrifice for that person, and you better hope (and pray if you do) that that person feels the same way about you.
i LOVE drivers license but dam matt's makin some really true points- I'd love to see him trying to react to something like tate mcrae With an album full of breakup songs. Or even SOUR, for that matter!
Well, this is like Romeo and Juliet, just without Shakespeare, who's just a dead white male anyway! And yeah, Matt, this is stalking. Or would be if the roles were reversed. But it's not, because...female feelings and empowerment and shit.
Actually, you can love someone at that age. Love can happen at any age, in fact. It just most likely won't work out. Doesn't mean the feelings weren't real.
I agree with him on many things here BUT I disagree when he says that “your relationships and friendships don’t matter”. That is practically not true because if you don’t date till you’re 23, you’re going to be really inexperienced on how to interact with the opposite sex. And while, yes, about 97% of people find the love of their life AFTER high school, FRIENDSHIPS DO MATTER. Having a childhood friend that you can grow with into your adult years is one of the most wholesome and purest relationships you can have with someone. I did watch the video till the end even when I started to disagree and I think that is important. Please like this if you thought this was insightful. And please respond if you disagree with me.

My parents told me I was too mentally ill to learn to drive around 16-17 ish and didn’t consider teaching me until I was 18. So the way you were like, “why is this girl crying while driving? She’s gonna get killed?” It literally just made me rethink everything I was told in my teens haha.
I learned to drive at 11 🤣🤣
My dad actually forbided me from having any driving lessons at any age at all😅
I still dont know how to drive. I am 25 already

“You shouldn’t date till you’re 23”
“I’ve just decided” 🤣 this guy is amazing.
Thanks Matt for going out and sharing this important point and story with the world, as I feel that people should hear it.

haha, I thought Matt would say something about that
Yes that's what I was thinking
That part just bothers me - way too much!
Can someone explain please ? I am a french speaker

Many people experience love three times in their lives. The first phase is “puppy love” that isn’t really love, but infatuation. Dude, please do this more often, you genuinely had me laughing out loud. As a 33 y/o man, I can relate with the cynicism you approach the trivialities of teenage broken heart.
