Having a crab sleep in your hair is the only thing more terrifying than the Scuttlebutt song.
That island where the kids became donkeys was one of the most disturbing things I ever saw as a child. People talk like Watership Down is traumatizing to kids, but I enjoyed that. It was that scene from Pinochio that totally creeped me out.

Nah, Watership Down IS REALLY traumatizing to most children. It’s pretty gory and unforgiving. As a child, I think the scariest Disney moment was when King Triton destroyed Ariel’s collection of human items. I would cover my eyes during that part, lol 😂

Ok shiny is a treasure, because not only does it get us to understand the character in just a few minutes, but it also exposes the weaknesses of Maui. So out of context, it doesn’t work, but in context of the movie, I think it works as a great villain song.
Yea, always loved that song. It's very original, catchy, adds to the narrative. Didn't love the movie, but that song is one of the best Disney songs.
Of all the songs Matt could rag on, I was surprised Shiny was one of them.
It was also written as a tribute to a specific artist. People fail to remember or realize that.

I went to watch the lion king remake in theater with no expectation, and when 'be prepared' came on, one kid was so mad he started to sing the original version, and everyone followed. Best moment of the film.
There was some attempted bullsh*t justification on the part of the filmmakers for removing _Be Prepared_ but I can’t remember it.

@@tomsautocadstudio6446 - nothing so obvious; I think it was that the filmmakers thought that the original song could only really work to full effect with the flexible 2D animation (but then again they apparently thought that they could get away with ‘Can't Wait to be King’?), and in this version the hyenas had their own thing going on anyway, in relation to which Scar was an outsider, unlike being their de facto leader in the original.

True, it was a great song. They literally can’t make a song like that anymore. After all it’s all about being strong, swift and courageous and how that’s part of being a man.
The Beauty and the Beast story is not to be taken literally…obviously, kids are not thinking about bestiality or Stockholm syndrome (too complicated). They are being taught that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, and everyone can find redemption from their sins and weaknesses. The Beast use to be a selfish, hard-hearted prince, but because of the positive influence of Belle and her kindness, he wanted to be a better man and change. Which is why he let her go in the end. Thus the whole transformation was made complete when she came to love the man behind the beast.

There is an interesting element though that Belle lives in a fantasy world of books a chunk of the time. She’s probably read the fairy tales and redemption stories. The rest of the villagers have only lived in the small real world where wild animals and beasts are historically a problem. She’s going off of theory while they are going off of lived experience. For better or worse, the “educated” girl going off of books is right in the end while the “ignorant” townspeople are wrong.
I don’t have a problem with Beauty and the Beast being a children’s movie/story whatsoever. Children generally aren’t thinking about beastiality. At least, they weren’t in the 90s. Something corrected in the live action from the animated version is the age the Beast was made a Beast. Based on the rose and such, in the animated version he was a literal child-like 10 or 11. Of course he’s going to be a giant douche to anyone. He’s probably a giant douche to EVERYONE at that age. I don’t care what century it is based in.
Gaston is the good guy if he has no additional information and has no ulterior motive and thinks the Beast will hurt Belle. But… Gaston isn’t a good guy. Even if the Beast were evil and wanted to kill, Gaston isn’t a good guy. In some ways, maybe?
He makes out Belle’s father to be insane so that he can get his way with Belle. He has her and her father locked up in an insane asylum because he doesn’t get his way?
If Gaston was ONLY concerned about keeping Belle and her father- and the villagers alive? Then he’d be the good guy. But no. He didn’t actually care about any of that, at all. He just didn’t want her to love the Beast over himself. His love for himself was his undoing. If he cared about anyone but himself the story would have a different ending.
Plus, evermore is a great song and doesn’t deserve to be on this video.
I'm so sorry Matt. I have loved and agreed with every single thing you have ever said. But thinking SHINY is bad? No shot. No way. That is, I regret to say, a BAD TAKE. Shiny is the single best Disney song of all human history. It brought nations together, ended wars, and brought peace and joy to the world. I hope you recover from this obvious lapse in judgement, and peace be with you.
I’m a big fan of the Daily Wire and I agree wholeheartedly. I just love the expression in Jermaine Clement’s voice as well as the perfect harmony from the backing vocals. Matt might’ve had a point about the scene itself being a little chaotic but no one can deny how great the buildup is to “SHINYYYY!!”

This is gonna be a VERY unpopular opinion.. scuttlebutt isn't that bad. I'm actually kind of impressed with the way the lyrics flow and as abrasive as it is, which I feel was done on purpose to suit this annoying character, it's kinda catchy and it's unique. It doesn't sound like everything else which is my second biggest complaint about musicals in general is that all of the songs are boring and sound the same. This isn't boring. It's also a movie for kids and kids will laugh at this. I'd bet money this becomes most kids' favorite song from this movie.
Man disney missing the bar with beauty and the beast was so sad. Belle wasn't in love with beast until the very end of the movie in the cartoon. Why? Because she realized she fell in love with him when he sacrificed it all and let her be free instead of caging and coveting her.

Right up to the Beast's death it was still active, but Belle's final whisper of "I love you" is the catalyst. While she might have realized she was falling for him, it wasn't enough until that very end moment.

She knows that she's falling for him in the middle and knows she loved him when she goes back to her father. That's why Gaston went after him in the first place. Encanto is one of the few last Disney Originals with good songs (Bruno went #1 on billboard for months) and reception from the public. The ending wasnt that good tbh, but the songs and the effort put in capturing the Colombian culture into it was spot on. And yeah Mr. Walsh, it's not Mexican movie, but Colombian.

For that Beauty and the Beast version, why didn’t they take the Beast’s amazing song from the Broadway production that was done in 1994 and have him sing “If I Can’t Love Her”?? It’s absolutely fantastic and written by Alan Menken, who wrote all of the music for all of the amazing 90s Disney productions that we all love.
Disagree with Moana. Moana was a great movie and Jemaine is awesome (especially in FOTC). I love how he tries to pull off a David Bowie vibe/parody in a lot of his songs with a hint of the eccentricity but also adds humour. Not the best song in the movie at all but definitely not a bad song
The original French movie, “La Belle Y Le Bete” was excellent and shows the moral theme the original author of “Beauty and the Beast” actually wanted to portray. It was about keeping your word and being honorable not falling in love with a beast.

The last great Disney animated feature was probably MULAN. The story was not a Disney story, really. It was an adaptation of Chinese folklore for western audiences. It had all the great elements of well-composed Disney movie. Of course, modern Disney had to reboot it with live action woke crap because they just can't let success stand.

Last time I was in a theater I took my family to see "Wreck It Ralph".
That was in ~2012 and I recall it not being terrible. My son loves video games so it was a good experience.

I will say. I actually love Evermore from beauty and the beast. It’s one of my favorite songs. I sang it in choir.
The encanto one really isnt awful. I mean the first verse is fine. But it does feel very plastic, in the sense that its not real. Its just a product to be sold.
It doesn't feel real because it's completely unwarranted character development. We have this character who up until this moment couldn't really stand to be around Mirabell and now all of a sudden wants to be close with her and wants to grow. It's a forced song that's just sort of okay
Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Concords) doing the voice of Tomatoa singing Shiny from Moana was awesome. Flight of the Concords was hysterical, great comedy and songs they did early on in 2006 and the show years after. I liked that Moana song !,

I'm still so mad about the Beauty and the Beast song. The original, the Beast just roared in pain as he was letting her leave. It was visceral and moving. Then some writer decided, "you know what people in REAL pain do? They sing songs about the pain they're in, rather than roaring out their pain". And everyone freaking clapped. I was ENRAGED when I saw that change, even if the actor's voice is amazing.

It's actually part of what makes a musical, when the emotions are that strong the character starts singing. What makes it really sad is that Beast actually has a beautiful song from the original broadway show as well which is 10x better in my opinion in expressing his anguish over his situation. If you're ever interested it's called If 'I Can't Love Her'

@Ava Zwirn totally fair! I'm a musical fan so I've seen/listened to a lot of the soundtracks. There are a lot of good songs I wish they had used in the live actions like Shadowlands and He Lives in You from Lion King, Positoovity and She's in Love from Little Mermaid, and High Adventure (really any of the songs with Aladdin and his band) and Proud of Your Boy
It’s still the same composer, Alan Menken. I loved this song as well, I think it adds some personality to the beast that we didn’t really see as much in the original

Howard Ashman and Alan Menken were already Broadway writers with hit musicals like "Little Shop of Horrors" under their belts..when were writing the songs and stories for the Little Mermaid, Beauty & The Beast and Aladdin.

7:34 in the original film, (and the remake,) there’s a scene where Belle goes into the forbidden West Wing, and sees a slashed portrait of the beast’s former face. It’s implied she put 2 & 2 together, and realized the Beast was once human.

Overall I agree with Matt's assessment of these songs. However, I actually quite liked the movie Encanto because of the message it gives and it being about family and not romance; and the music of Encanto was probably the best overall soundtrack in 10+ years (from Disney). Also, I love the song Evermore from the live action Beauty and the Beast. Didn't really like the movie as a whole but that songs speaks to my soul 💜

The problem with Encanto is its subtle attack on men. All the men in the movie are portrayed as being weak. They don’t need to be center stage to demonstrate their strength, but every single one is commanded by the women around them.

Families/cultures used to tell fairy tales or sing folk songs to entertain children and usually give a moral lesson or pass on history. Especially, before most people were literate. Now these movies are made for "everyone" but are satisfying to no one.
I'll have to disagree with your Pinnochio statement, I loved the original Disney film, the start was super wholesome and I still remember watching it (and I was scared of the donkey kids parts)
It's bad now. They've edited the movie to remove the smoking, drinking and gambling on pleasure island. So now it looks like the kids were turned into donkeys for no damn reason.
