    I’m a therapist and this is such a beautiful video. Self care isn’t just being gentle with ourselves. Self care is also pushing ourselves to do things that we know are good for us even when we don’t want to. Sometimes we have to show ourselves that we’re worth it even if we don’t believe it in the moment 💕

    Your honesty is so beautiful. I totally feel you about showering. When I’m in a depressive episode, my hygiene is one of the first elements to be limited. I love using a shower cap so I can get in the shower and focus on body care without washing my hair if I don’t have the energy. I can make it a few days without a hair wash but you’re so right, a daily rinse, some body oil, and a bit of lotion do wonders for me, and it isn’t as exhausting as I anticipate. Love to you, lovely!

If you’ve never understood why some people don’t shower or hate showering… consider yourself BLESSED. Anything I can do to improve my shower experience helps. The smells and textures and the idea that I’m paying attention to my body, just for me. No one else.

    Such a great video- I have suffered with chronic depression and anxiety as well as being a mental health therapist who is very good working with my clients but not taking my own advice. I don’t know what it is about taking showers, washing brushes and even putting on makeup when I am not working. All of these activities make me so happy once I start them but taking that first step seems so impossible sometimes. On the outside you can look fine and put together even when you are not showering every day and I don’t think a lot of people realize that. So it can be easy to hide that low lever of depression that people don’t see you struggling with.
    I hope this is understandable and helpful.

    the shower thing is so real!!! i hate feeling wet (heh) and have always just not loved showering. but i realized showering more regularly has helped my body acne and kp TREMENDOUSLY. things i’ve found that help: finding shower products i love using and!!! super absorbent towels as well as using a hair dryer on my body. sounds weird but gets me feeling dry quickly so i can put my clothes on and feel comfy and clean ! seriously y’all. it’s so great to figure out what it is in particular that you hate about something and then finding sometimes unconventional solutions. similarly- i would let dishes pile up in my sink and then i realized i did it because i didn’t tlike touching the dirty dishes. solution? GLOVES! literally (like not even hyperbole) changed my life. good luck to anyone struggling and if anyone is reading this pls share any similar epiphanies y’all have had because maybe i will learn something helpful ❤❤❤❤❤

  • @isadorasmiles9339
    @isadorasmiles9339 Год назад +8

    To expand on your last suggestion about your thoughts changing about your makeup, I definitely can relate to your point. I was getting lost during the surge of minimalist content and declutters. I was getting rid of stuff because I told myself I had too many duplicates or you don’t wear this enough or I only need so many. Although some cases it’s true, I also felt like I stripped too much where makeup wasn’t what it was for me. Now I feel true resurgence of why I love make up. For me, I love variety, textures, color, techniques, changing my look from day to day to fit my mood. I also like to be apart of the beauty community space here on RUclips a lot and like to buy certain influencers makeup releases to support and feel a part of something. To me make up is an art form. Sometimes I felt bad before spending like an 1.5-2hrs doing my makeup and hair to not really do much for the day. But for me, it’s a time of loving myself, self expression, and just having fun and to feel good. I’ll even wear a more done up look to the grocery store. Idc anymore. So while other people may think it’s crazy, for me it brings value. My mind set now is not “do I need this” but instead “does this add value to my life and is it worth investing in”. This has helped a lot and has allowed myself permission to explore and try something new. Since then I’ve finally gave myself sweep bangs again after a long time of debating, wearing brighter colors and patterns. It’s helped a lot and I feel the most like myself in awhile. It’s true mindset is everything in order to make changes. Thanks for sharing your struggles❤
    Side note of the showering topic, I always play music while showering like Lofi music and I think that really changes the game. It puts you in zen mode

Idk what it is with the anticipation or just the build up to get in there but warm drinks and a podcast have been doing wonders for my pre-shower routine

  • @Arbee1000
    @Arbee1000 Год назад +3

    I thought not showering every day was my dirty little secret 😊 I started working fully from home about 5 years ago and I stopped showering every day. When the pandemic hit it got worse since I’d go days at a time without leaving my apartment, especially in the winter. I would simply forget to shower sometimes or just keep putting it off until it got so late that I would decide to wait until the next morning. I know a big part of it is that I live alone and I don’t like silence, so I always have to have a show or podcast playing during all non-working, non-sleeping hours. Taking a shower is a long stretch of time where I can’t distract myself from the silence with any media, especially if it’s a long shower where I’m washing my hair or shaving. I keep Parks & Rec playing on my phone on the counter so I can at least hear it after I turn the water off, which comforts me. It’s strange how the loneliness that I sometimes feel plays into my reluctance to shower at times. But I do love being showered and feeling clean, even if I don’t love the process. I try to buy nice smelling body washes to make the experience more enjoyable. Right now I’m showering at least every 3rd day since that’s how often I wash my hair. And then the rest of the days it mostly depends on whether I went to the gym or not.

    Really enjoyed this video coming at the perfect time. I’ve had lung disease my whole life, and worked as a nurse for 30 years in the Pediatric ICU. I was diagnosed 20 years ago with PTSD. Learning how to cope with self care is essential. We all have things we have to overcome, and I enjoyed hearing your thoughts. We don’t need to be ashamed about this. I am 65, and currently am having health issues, which is triggering my mental health. Makeup is great therapy, so is my work as an artist. I am active physically-just got my second black belt in Taekwondo. Just want to say how much I love your channel! And, as we age, showering is not recommended every day-itbstrips away all your skins protective barrier. I am trying to be better about body oils and creams. But I skip out on a shower about once a week unless I’ve been to TaeKwonDo-then it’s a necessity.

    A lot of this resonated with me. I don’t have any particular issues but I’m a later bloomer who needed some maturity to get to know myself. 1. My skin feels too hot and dry without sunscreen so using it is a comfort thing for me. You may like it! 2. I live in an old house in the north so getting out of the shower is my issue. It’s cold when I get out in the winter and the A/C is freezing me in the summer so I hate to shower. I block the vent in the summer (I don’t know why it took me so many years to think of doing that) and I got a towel warmer and it’s a lot better now. You can get one shaped like a trash can with a lid and the towels are toasty. I had also been forcing myself to do the spa things, like scrubs, but I stopped. I really just want to get in and out quickly. I bought scrubbing mitts to get the job done quickly. I hate having to lotion up and I have dry skin so I’m experimenting with moisturizing mists or just skipping it sometimes. I lotion any part that’s visible when I get dressed. 4. I use a washcloth to clean my face. No drips and I hold the warm washcloth on my face for a minute and it melts the balm. I have some washcloths only for my face. I bought them in a dark color so makeup stains aren’t bothering me. 7. I don’t have a lot of makeup so I get fomo. I’ve tried to change my mindset about things. I now call my limited jewelry my signature look so people kind of expect to see me in it. I change it whenever. I call my clothes my uniform for the season. I wear a very small selection and I’ve actually had people say that it’s a good idea and freeing. I get a few things that really speak to me. I’m not really a minimalist though. I have no rules about quantity. I don’t get anything I’m not thrilled to own. This means I don’t ignore many items. Some of these changes took time and some clicked right away.

    I'm so guilty of not using sunscreen consistently until recently. Love the one from Apostrophe. Then I love Sun Bum face mist for reapplying. Both work beautifully.
    I was diagnosed with ADHD about a yr ago. I get horrible anxiety where I just freeze... And doing the littlest things (like jumping in the shower) is debilitating. Been going through a rough depression lately... But I've been forcing myself to shower almost daily, and to do my makeup almost daily. It really does help. Love these vids ❤

    This was a much needed video - I admit that I have a small hoarding issue with makeup - I have too much but I'm working on using it up and not buying as much. I have firced myself to date when I start using an eyeshadow palette and consistently using it for 3 months and then throwing it out. You touched on one issue that I feel is almost a generational thing - self care - showers (baths), skin lotion and all that stuff can be overwhelming because it takes time if you do it right and I was brought up in a house where taking self time was considered selfish if you were in the bathroom for more than 15 minutes so even though sometimes it feels exhausting - I have given myself permission to take time for myself and I always feel better afterwards.

    Thank you for mentioning the shower part! Sometimes I feel alone in that. Having dry skin and eczema, I feel like it's a huge chore every time I shower. I have to use a rich prescription moisturizer all over my body within minutes of exiting or I'll dry up like a mummy. I also have a dry scalp and eczema there too, so it's dry like the Sahara desert (and itchy) after I've washed my hair. I envy people who can just take a quick shower, get out and get dressed with no hassle.

    I hate washing my face for the same reason. I found these things on Temu that you put on your wrists when you wash your face, and they absorb the water. It actually really helps. The water doesn’t run down your arms, so it keeps a lot of water off the counter.

    I appreciate you for saying a lot of this Lauren. I've been struggling the last few years with my mental health and showers are an issue. It's embarrassing! I'm not stinky either 😊 but it's just not something I can do everyday. I've also become mostly locked in my house. I wasn't able to phase out of the lockdown unfortunately. I had just gotten out of a traumatic experience when all of that began so it was oddly a relief to me to be shut away from the world. I am working on myself with my therapist, so hopefully I can get back to some "normalcy" soon. I still love doing my makeup and skincare, I'm just the only one that really sees it.
    I just wanted to thank you for making me feel a little less weird. ❤❤❤

    I was using makeup as my creative outlet during the times we all were supposed to stay home. I am gradually returning to my prepandemic makeup levels, which is just wearing it to perform, for special occasions, and to help me build characters. For a while I was trying to hang on to the makeup time even while I added back my older activities, but I started feeling resentful about forcing myself to do makeup every day, so now it is just for when I want to. I am performing today, and I am looking forward to taking an hour to build a dramatic look to help me get into my over the top character! But the rest of this week, I chose to do other things, like take my kids to a museum, go hiking, practice my music, and more, and I didn't put pressure on myself to wear makeup for any of those things. Even when I went to get a new ID photo for my work, I just put some tinted lip balm on. I still love makeup, and I still get those feelings swatching pretty things, I just don't feel like I NEED to do it or xyz will happen (I will waste my products because they will go bad, people will think I don't take care of myself, people will ask if I am sick, etc).
    I do love all the advice here about self care hygeine. Getting a shower cap was a game changer for me, that is for sure. I have a lot of fine, long hair, so I tend to need hydrating products to make a wash last rather than dry shampoo, and finding that out and realizing I could put my hair in a shower cap and not have to wash and dry it was super helpful. Now, if I don't have time to wash and dry my hair, I just put a tiny amount of dry shampoo at the roots, a little hair oil or leave in conditioner on the ends, and then twist it up into my shower cap, shower as normal, then brush out my hair when I am out of the shower. No more waiting around for my hair to dry, no more telling myself that there was no point in showering if I don't want to get my hair wet, and so I am more likely to actually treat my body as though it is worthy of care.
    One of the things I have been doing as well in the same vein of "my body is worthy of care..." is that I have been spending a little more on some products because it is worth that to not be frustrated. Example: I used to only buy the cheapest nail polish, spend a bunch of time painting my nails, then be frustrated when it woukd start chipping before the excess polish even wore off the skin around my nail beds. I started buying fewer colors but slightly more expensive polishes ($5-$10 instead of $1), and now I can make a manicure last a few days or even a week. Which is impressive, I am really tough on my hands. I was frustrated by the dollar store hair care products I was using, starting spending a little more on nice drugstore products instead. I don't need to use as much product when it just works, who knew? I am never going to be the person who goes for the most expensive option because I just don't think it is worth it, but my time and my care are worth using products that do what they are supposed to.
    I know I regularly need to hear this, and if it makes you feel uncomfortable to hear it, you probably do, too: you are worthy of care and love, just by virtue of existing and being you. No one is more worthy of your care and attention than you are. You have always deserved that love and care, and you always will.

    I always recommend that makeup wearers who have some harder nights/days to use milk cleansers with reusable cotton rounds (I like the garnier ones) instead of wipes if you need a low-effort-required/emergency beside the bed makeup removal with no rinse required. I've liked the lancome one (lait galatee comfort) but it is scented, and would mostly be suggesting you find one of these types of products that YOU love! It's a great bridge for those who sleep in makeup sometimes, love wipes and need to swap, and would prefer not to fully cleanse 💖💖💖

I totally feel you with so many things, especially the face washing. One thing that's really helped me is washing my face by a method Salli Hughes writes in her book Pretty Honest-using a gel cleanser like Cerave or Cetaphil non-foaming and using on dry skin, then wiping off with a warm wet face cloth. It's less messy, good for days with less or no makeup (most days for me), and is also kind of exfoliating!

    Oh girl, you're not alone in any of it. As for sunscreen, I grew up in the 70's and 80's and the only thing we put on our skin at the beach was baby oil. Fortunately I'm not a sun girl, so I'm mostly inside or in the shade. I've only had a few bad sunburns in my life but I know that's enough to get skin cancer. I'm in my 50's now and it is still a struggle to even think about sunscreen. I know I should wear it in the shade too but old habits die hard. I did buy one recently and am trying to push myself to use it. As for washing your face, you can buy hair scrunchies that are that washcloth material (I've seen them, so they're out there!) and put them just above your wrists and they will catch all the water. No more water dripping down your arms! It's a total game changer because I hated getting water everywhere too. If I can remember the name of the creator, there is someone on either Instagram or Etsy that sells skincare sleeves. But in a pinch, the scrunchies will work. 😊 Depression for me also means having to push myself just to shower. For whatever reason, self care just goes out the window. I've been struggling with depression all of my life and it has worsened in the last 10 years. Hygiene is the first to suffer. Everything is a struggle. So know you are not alone in any of it. And thank you for speaking on it - it lets me know I am not alone either. ❤

I had a really rough the last half a year, I’m slowly getting better but it’s good to know that someone actually understands. People in my personal life have been just brushing me off, they don’t care nor want to learn about depression and it’s really been hard, going through all of this on my own, so I’m going to internet to connect with people who actually care, know and understand, but you are just the first person to say out loud what it’s really like, I appreciate. Cleaning makeup brushes, wearing sunscreen, taking walks, etc could all fit very nicely into a counter app. It’s a super easy way to see if you did something relatively recently or maybe you’re a bit overdue for another entry.

    I struggle with getting in the shower, because it’s too much change at one time : clothed then naked, dry then wet, … I don’t like being naked and sometimes feeling the drops of water is overwhelming. I don’t like wearing sunscreen, I HATE feeling something on my face. I found spf that are okay on the body and not horrible on the face. Powdering (just corn starch, I don’t own makeup) on top of it helps a lot, and I’m tempted to buy an actual makeup powder but I don’t know if it would do better in terms of feeling on the skin ? I don’t mind the starch being visible and it’s not that visible actually.
    I don’t really have access to not-supermarket-spfs, but even they have gone a very long way.

    On Amazon i found a 6 pack of 6 inch long towel wristbands. Like for sports and sweating etc. But they are game changers for washing my face. I can't stand the mess (and honestly don't have the energy to deal with it, like i just wouldn't wash my face then) but these keep the water from running down my arms and all over the floor. Must haves. When I'm done I wring them out really well and hang them from a plastic clothespin type thing next to my sink to dry until next time. Wash after a few uses. The big thing is to take that first step towards doing something and the rest will have a chance at least to follow. If i can get the energy to put on those wristbands, then I'll tackle the next step, and see if there's energy for the next after that. But at least my face got washed! And i love skincare and how my face feels after, it's just that darn it, getting started can be overwhelming. ❤
