  • In todays video I introduce and review the Schumacher SC1281 Battery Charger/Booster/Jumper. If you have any machine that runs on a big battery, you owe it to yourself to have a durable, quality battery charger in your garage or shop. This one is small enough to put on a shelf, yet powerful enough to handle all you battery charging needs. At $75 it really is a no-brainer. Stop buying batteries when it may just need to be charged.

      This is an important point. The charger has AI and a desulfating mode which attempts to revitalize a dead battery. Don't jump to conclusions. It may be able to revive a 'dead' battery if left on for a period of time. Read your instructions!

  • @GeneL56
    @GeneL56 3 года назад +8

    You did not follow the directions. The charger should not be plugged into the wall socket until AFTER you connect the cables to the battery. You plugged it into the wall socket BEFORE you connected the cables. Once plugged into the wall socket, if you don't hit the Start/Stop button within 30 seconds , the charger will turn itself on automatically. So by the time you attached the cables to the battery, the charger was already "On" and the charger was reading the correct (low) voltage. Then you hit the Start/Stop button which turned the charger "Off". When you turned it back "ON" , the LED read zero, you assumed the battery was BAD. But when you started to take off the first cable, the LED read 10.2. Why? Because when you touched the cable, it re-established good contact with the post and the charger was working again. Had you simply re-attached both cables, the charger would have gone to work on the battery.
    And yes, as another commenter noted: when charging a battery outside of the vehicle (not hooked up under the hood), special precautions should be taken. Again, you did not follow directions.

    I bought the same exact Schumacker battery charger shown here. According to its manual, it says before charging, you must connect a battery cable of at least 2 feet in length (to keep yourself as far away from the battery when connecting the battery to the charger) to the negative battery post of the dead battery and then connect the free end of the the battery cable to the negatvie battery clip of the charger then turn on the charger. I noticed on this video you did not do this, so is it safe to not connect a battery cable to the negative battery post of the dead battery in order to charge the battery? I'm just asking because these are the instructions on the manual; maybe it is just a precaution in case the battery explodes or ignites from fumes from the dead battery.

    Read the Amazon reviews for this model. Over 300 one star reviews for problems ranging from melting the cables, melting the charger, stopped working after 2-3 uses, and the main one, it charges at maximum 30 amps without tapering down or stopping. There are probably over 100 users that complained that it melted their new automotive or golf cart battery, and no one is able to get a response from the manufacturer. My first one wouldn't stop charging, the replacement one reads out totally erroneous numbers.Don't say I didn't warn you.

    The problem with these microprocessor battery chargers is that if your battery is too dead it will not try to charge it. You could have a battery that's a week old that's dead in your car and if it drops below a certain voltage, it wont charge it. I found a way to trick it, if you have an old school battery charger, one that you can make spark if you touch the two clips together, hook that up and then hook one of these smart chargers up and run it for a minute and then you can unclip the old charger, then this one will keep charging it.

Of course the vehicle would be running during the charge. My situation is I travel for work as an escort vehicle for oversize semi loads. Sometimes we sit at job sites waiting to unload for hours at a time. Yes, this is the reason why many people don't like "smart" chargers. Since the "bad battery" LED isn't lighting up, I can assume that this is the likely source of the issue. It's likely that he could have started a charge by using the engine start or boost modes, but it's uncertain if doing so would be able to revive a dead battery that had been drained to about 3.5 volts.

  • @Cacheola

    You need to hammer a beyond dead battery in manual mode first, use 30a boost on this charger, get it past 10.5 first. This charger has an actual 'dead battery' LED - not saying it's accurate. Always check and fill that battery up with distilled water before charging!!

      SUL = it means "sulfated". Sometimes you can just keep charging and it will overcome that condition.

      Yes, once the battery is charged unplug the charger and then remove the negative then the positive

      @@Culley91 It has to be plugged in to do ANYTHING. It doesn't have a built-in battery. It's a CHARGER.

    just turning on and off doesn't tell me anything. If they call it a tester, it should give more info.

    You really don't know anything about batteries, do you?

  • @hughc8589
    @hughc8589 3 года назад

    Your video is inaccurate, the battery was incorrectly connected. You must press the start button within 30sec when initially plugged in to charge. This is the reason the charger turn off after press “start” (it was plugged in more than 30 sec when you pressed the “start” button).

      You press the Start button, then you have 30 seconds to start your car. That function is for jump starting a car, not for the charging function
