It's great to see more attempts at more historical shinobi blades instead of the ninjato. I like many of the style and length choices but the small samegawa panels and white showing between the ito is not good for the price. I'd have to do the tsuka maki. I personally don't like the kissaki. IMO any ko katana could be dressed in shinobi style if your on a budget. Thanks for showing us this.
Thanks for your appreciation, I agree for shinobi historical sword, it is quiet difficult to find shinken close from that, and also agree O kissaki difficult to deal with. Yes for the price the ito should not be moving and maybe have ishigami. Best regards
Dear Ronin, from my understanding the Katana Ookaze is the best budget sword for Battōjutsu practice because of its balance but not so good indoors. Can you recommend a wakizashi similar to ookaze in performance and price for Battōjutsu practice? Ty.

yes it is my opinion, after practicing in japan with shinsakuto (japanese sword made in japan around 8k-12k) with warakiri battosai sensei at his dojo and with blademan b in korea with motohara shinken (japanese sword made in korea around 3-4,5k), I still confirm that ookaze is the best budget ever practice with for battojutsu. Indoor practice requires 3-4m meters of height with jodan kamae. If practicing in saiza or hasso no kamae with 3meters of height battojutsu is doable with ookaze. You have the very good wakizashi from artkatana (500 euros) silver black that I design with them so you ask silver black from ronin hood at artkatana website 500 euros. One thing you will have to rewrap tsuka their ito artificial leather didn't endure well practice and became powder with intense practice. Anyway all of this will come with review and episodes on ronin hood with time. I will propose a rewrapping episode for silver black with japanese leather for rewrapping bought in japan in my new craft shop. BR

They told me it’s 14 cm from tsuba and when I looked again the next day the price went up from 355€ to 399€… they did recommend me the Iaito "Ryu.
I am new to this and not planing to be spending too much money in the beginning so your channel is a gem for us Europeans. Ookaze seems like a good choice for me since I have the required space but the wakizashi would give me more freedom indoors. I am looking forward for the wakizashi review. physical preparation/connecting & transfering with iaito/basics cuts with iaito-shinken
For the stand you can build yourself (I will give a tutorial on teachable or patreon on 2024) or buy one around 150e
Low cost iaito are not great at all, I truly recommend to start with iaito tozando (C2 for handling 2) your body will apreciate it and tozando/ookaze balance match works
I do not recommend to take ugly iaito or budshiden if low budget, but your iaito is almost more important than your shinken, you will calibrate your muscle memory on it, if wrong, wrong cuts.
The nagasa of iaito and shinken have to be at your size, tozando guide size.
the tsuka the same for the iaito if tsuka a little bit to long for shinken it is ok, ex : 27cm instead of 25cm
take your time for choosing iaito budget and correct measurement for iaito-sageo /shinken-sageo
then obi/stand/mats then iaido gi with juban if budget
For the wakizashi not great for starting tameshigiri
uchi katana (shinken) better for starting
You can adapt inside and practice in saiza if you have less than 3m height or hasso no kamae
Prices of mass inustrial sword market are really moving a lot since 2 years products can cost double in cup of months...
Point of balance is really relative, from a 71,2 cm nagasa/24,2 cm tsuka (my size) to a 71,cm nagasa/27 cm tsuka the point of balance won't be on the same place (ex 14 cm from the tsuba) even same swordsmith same craft
because the point of balance (POB) depend on relation between : tsuka length/weight - nagasa length/weight and weight distribution
I do not give any more attention to point of balance
instead : C1 / C2 / C3 (C=centered)
weight distribution close the tsuba C1 or middle of the blade C2 or monouchi C3
Each as a different way to handle

Yes I have seen that many business about sword in uk were getting more complicated,
nine circle has created an entreprise in germany (instead of uk), so they didn't ship from uk to europe anymore (apparently), so I guess it is the same for sword ... more complicated
Great news ! shinto from hanwei is the best I ever practiced with
almost perfect :
it miss buffalo horn on koiguchi for safety draws
and tsuka is a little bit to thin so it can cause problem of postural connections/edge alinement
depending on your size
anyway for a battodo practitioner you can practice hours of tameshigiri by week without
any joints pain
bohi sword requires more power and can be more complicated for double cuts
but shinto is very fluid very very well balanced and strong blade in my opinion

My second Custom-YNH came before three days it has very closed specs(it is only 2 cm shorter in Nagasa,and a bit shorter Tsuka-more a O-Whakizashi with a total bladelengh of 58cm including the Habaki 36mm width of the blade at the Habaki,26 mm witdth at the Kissaki)and it became easily after a few hours
my main sword because its much more versatile useable in closed quarters.I decided a T10 Steel with a Nihonto-style Hamon and a bit deeper sori.YHN made a very good job and I am so in love with this sword.

Merci egalement pour votre approche de la Togakure Ryu ( qui m'est chère ) car elle fait partie des ecoles que nous etudions au sein du Bujinkan - Mais elle n'est pas la seule ecole Shinobi , le bujinkan regroupant comme vous l'avez surement vu un ensemble de 9 ecoles ( 6 ecoles samurai et 3 ecoles shinobi )

merci pour votre commentaire et appréciation, depuis plus d’un an que je fais des recherches autours du ninjato et shinobigatana pour comprendre si le ninjato a vraiment bel et bien existé (invention hollywoodienne probable), comprendre quel etait la vraie fonction des shinobi historiques et leurs techinicité, les differentes ecoles et organisation, et les recherches actuellement lancé depuis Iga Ueno, je découvre un univers martial passionnant et très riche.
Je me sens proche de cette discipline (pratique du battojustu et shurikenjustu
+ karaté + adaptation en milieu naturel)
bien que ne la pratiquant pas et continue mes recherches autours du ninpiden shoninki et bansenshukai car des personnages emblématiques tels qu’Hattori Hanzo Samourai shinobi sont très inspirant je trouve pour enrichir ses connaissances et sa pratique martiale et établir des ponts entre les disciplines budo.
L’ecole bunjinkan a l’air vraiment tres interessante dans sa diversite d’outils et disciplines,
en vous souhaitant le meilleur dans votre pratique avec ce shinken

pour samourai-katanas/murasame/histophile a qui je demanderai s’ils souhaitent me l’envoyer pour une review, nous sommes actuellement sur des creations de customs qui feront l’objet de review notament un tres beau wakizashi tres bien equilibre avec une nagasa de 50cm quasiment un sabre shinobi (et si l’on en croit le shoninki les shinobi utilisaient des wakizashi en mission de reconnaissance infiltration)

en fait , dans un monde parfait , on aurait l'esthetique de ce shinobigatana coté yarinohanzo , et ce tres appreciable motohaba , et l' equilibre Hanwei 😀
Bonjour Stéphane, merci pour votre commentaire et appréciation, je vous comprends, en effet bien que ce shinobigatana soit dans mon top 3 de ces 3 dernières années (1/ Shinto hanwei 2/ Ookaze 3/ shinobigatana YNH) pour la pratique du battojutsu (sur des critères : 1/ praticité: équilibrage de lame/polyvalence possible de pratique/taille/solidité (batto tamesh niten) et 2/ esthétique) car il est très pratique en intérieur et son poids/lame nohi (même : C1 "centered 1" close from the tsuba) fonctionne sur tout type d'omote (même mugen dachi), mais également son prix très abordable (- de 500€), il reste très rigide et au delà de deux heures de coupes cela grince dans les poignets et l'ensemble du corps...
Je pense que pour des coupes simples et double n'excédant pas 5-6 omote (1H-1H15 de coupe) il a une esthétique et une efficacité nohi vraiment top pour son prix, mais pour quelqu'un qui recherche un sabre sans effort fluide et sans douleurs articulaires avec un équilibrage sérieux (pour 2-4h de coupe) le shinto de chez Hanwei ou le ookaze sont incomparables en terme de qualité d'équilibrage (type C2).
A noter également que la kissaki est très fragile car O kissaki et facilement tordable et particulière à maitriser en noto.
J'ai réalisé un show live (shuriken/iaito/battojutsu) pour la marque shiseido (épisode à venir) et j'ai utilisé le shinobigatana car lame plus courte en intérieur plus safe avec des photographes qui ne suivent pas les consignes (10M de distance de sécu) cependant avec le stress du live je me suis rendu compte que l'équilibrage est un facteur de fatigue non négligeable et une lame plus courte demande plus de puissance pour le même résultat de coupe, ai donc un avis mitigé mais plutôt positif sur ce sabre dont le point fort est la coupe en intérieur appartement par exemple (en sécurisant le plafond murs et sol).
je suis complètement d'accord avec vous,
l'esthétique de chez YNH est vraiment leur point fort,
à ce jour l'une des seules marques fiables que j'ai pu essayer sur plusieurs sabres reste Hanwei
(Huawei défaut sur la sori trop importante) ou encore john lee mais j'ai appris que leur controle qualité avait évolué depuis 3 ans (à vérifier) (john lee hannya très bon modele idem pour prac john lee)
Je n'ai pas encore trouvé de marque idéale proposant un sabre aussi confortable qu'un iaito tozando :
- pb sur les tsuka hanwei (special prac et XL (shinto tsuka un peu trop fine)
- pb sur équilibrage YNH
- pb équilibrage huawei
- pb tsuba ito john lee hannya/practical (meme si peu cher et efficace)
- Z sey pb tsuka et équilibrage (à venir)
- pb tsuba et ito dragonfly murasame
Il est vraiment difficile de trouver pour 500-1000€ un sabre made in china avec les bonnes dimensions/équilibrage/solidité et esthétique pour un pratiquant de battodo ou ninjutsu ayant une pratique hebdo de 4-12H
et réalisant nukiuchi/kesa/gyaku kesa/suihei à une main ou deux mains.
Motohaba, vous appréciez la largeur de lame proche de la tsuba de chez Hanwei ?
