  • Rail service along the San Francisco Peninsula began when Abraham Lincoln was president. Under the leadership of various organizations, including Southern Pacific and CalTrans, this historic train line has persevered. Now, Caltrain serves some of the most innovative train riders in the world as it winds its way from San Jose, through Silicon Valley to San Francisco. Join us as we explore one of the World's Greatest: Caltrain.

    When I was in San Francisco on vacation in 2016, we actually rode the Caltrain from the city to San Jose. It was really fun getting on the train and going for a long ride. We actually made it a day out of it looking somewhere outside of San Francisco.

    "High speed" rail and the imbecilic blended system will be a disaster for this corridor. The Peninsula needs to demand the system that was originally promised.

    • @rebooted.jupiter_
      @rebooted.jupiter_ 3 года назад

      I agree. They call CalTrain the worlds greatest train but they’re getting rid of the diesels and the bombardier cars

    • @someguy6075
      @someguy6075 3 года назад

      @@rebooted.jupiter_ Can't speak to the rolling stock, though diesels are not good for headway and capacity. Caltrain needed to go electric and there's no way around it.
      The "blended system" refers to the tracks. The SF peninsula (San Jose to San Fran) was promised 4 tracks, 2 each way, with all roads separated (tunnels or bridges). Then they realized they don't have enough money.
      They reneged and want to keep the existing tracks. Caltrains will have to wait at sidings to let high speed trains pass, and cars still have to wait at crossings despite much more frequent trains. The plan throws everyone else under the bus to benefit only the high speed trains.

    Caltrain is definitely the best in the US, with connections to light rail, subway, and Amtrak. Can't wait for the extension to the Transbay Terminal to open. I use it every day and don't think I'll need a car since it gets to San Francisco and San Jose quicker than a car in California's standstill traffic.

      Supernova Strike you do realize that there’s other commuter trains that connect to subways and Amtrak and other transits, and light rail honestly is terrible

    I love Caltrain alot but I still think MARC is better. I'm not saying that because its my home town commuter. MARC has fast, and reliable service that usually gets good reviews! Right now MARC is the fastest commuter train in the US from what I saw and I see why. Most of the trains can top 125 on the NEC! It might change in a few years tho because of your electrification.

      Depends on the line. Caltrain track speed is 79 mph. The fastest train right now in the usa is the accela express in the northeast. The highest track speed there is 150 mph.

      @@oct197. who cares they are still part of the f40 family and they are at least not SCREAMERS. the main reason of why i prefer the 2CATs or 2C's(920-922) than the standard f40's(the screamers) is because the non-screamers are more efficient with separate HEP generators, and the screamers roar so loudly when the prime mover is at 900 RPM and that will be wasting fuel leading to how inefficient screamers are than their Non-Screamer counterparts.

    • @TigerRailfan

      Im sure the F40's have had a lot of wear and tear, and it would be better and more space efficent to buy those cars from siemens. It would look a lot more modern and cleaner.

      @Trainlover1995 8 лет назад +3

      I'm not. I will NOT see the F40s and gallery cars rust in a scrapyard! Besides, I prefer locomotive-haulage over multiple units. EMUs will make Caltrain rather bland. And I don't see the Dumbarton Project going forward anytime soon, so the MP36s and BiLevels won't have much to do except run the trains that go to Gilroy.
      Now if they instead went for electric locomotives (likely the ACS-64 like Amtrak is using) and refurbished the gallery cars, that'd be good. Besides, I'm sure Metra or any other commuter railroad hungering for power could give the old F40s a good home.
