    As a regular Caltrain rider I fully endorse the electrification from an environmental standpoint, 90% reduction of emissions is fantastic! Other necessary improvements: faster trains and more variety in bullet routes (add Santa Clara and Lawrence to a bullet schedule). Finally, a smart bike car design. As a layman, I guarantee you I could have designed a more efficient bike car than the current one

    • @danieldefalco5614

      That's a Californian opinion for you..Diesel-electric locomotives are highly efficient as they are now. They have safe emissions and are "good on gas". It's only a California overly overkill eco thought process that makes electrification a bigger more important deal than it really is.

    • @wenchance
      @wenchance 9 лет назад +26

      ***** It's not only about the environment. Diesel hauled service is naturally slower (and less efficient) than electrified systems, especially if the train is locomotive-hauled. Distributed power EMUs ensures faster acceleration and deceleration and short dwell times (if Caltrain implements level boarding). Diesel services can only get you so far, when demand starts to push for increased efficiency, diesel electric won't cut it. Electrifying as well eliminates the need for diesel fuel on a majority of the main-line, which saves cash-strapped Caltrain A LOT OF MONEY. Buying electricity from a grid is much cheaper than buying fuel.

    • @qwerty112311
      @qwerty112311 9 лет назад +1

      +John Morrow That 90% figure is total bs since the power comes from the grid, of which over half is from coal/nat gas. Are emissions being reduced? on an operating basis, slightly. Add in the emissions from the construction of electrification infrastructure and that changes the equation a ton.

    Americans are so negative about most anything relating to public transportation, particularly rail. Can't understand their mentality in this regard.

    • @kansasthunderman1
      @kansasthunderman1 7 лет назад +6

      Public transportation is a complete failure. People need the freedom to go where they want and when they want without being dependent on some broken down government run transit system. Public transportation also relies on government subsidies obtained by taxes and fees charged on private autos. Transit agencies should raise fares to cover 100% of the cost of operation and quit sapping cars owners to pay for this failed socio-economic experiment.

    • @purrup1

    • @kansasthunderman1
      @kansasthunderman1 6 лет назад +1

      Most people can NOT use slow, crowded, and raunchy mass transit and they need to use a car to get around in a timely and comfortable manner. With that in mind, building more mass transit isn't going to get people out of their cars either and what we really need is more freeways.
      Let CalTrans plan building a new 6 lane freeway right through San Francisco and people will think twice about building more housing and office buildings.

To connect the Northbay and Southbay with one line would be amazing.

      @ToddKeck98 4 года назад +3

      @@leontransit1652 The Fukushima I meltdown only happened because the facility was already 40 years old plus the earthquake that caused its demise is not an ordinary one. It's basically the 5th strongest of its kind in recorded history. Fukushima II and all the other plants were successfully shut down by 2012 to compare before radioactive material spreads out of the plants and causing another disaster.
      Also, renewables aren't exactly the solution either. You can have the case of Germany vs. France for example. Germany decided to start decommissioning its nuclear plants in exchange of renewable energy. France meanwhile kept its nuclear plants. France is paying less on electric power compared to Germany, by estimates of Germany paying up to 3 times to that of France, and France also has less carbon emissions despite not using as much renewable energy assets as Germany does.
      Since it's pretty much expected for CalTrain to use renewable energy to power CalMod, both the construction and operational costs are expected to be higher.

  • @Welwyn22

    I do have a question or two about this modernization plan. I'm totally in favor of it, but with the electrification and new signalling, will there also be the installation and extension of four-track sections to accommodate HSR sometime after 2020? Also I feel that there are just too many stations that follow each other in quick succession, and some could be closed to reduce dwell times on double-track sections. Stations such as Broadway, Burlingame, Hayward Park, and countless others towards San Jose. Are there any plans for the closure of stations on sections which cannot be quadruple tracked or upgraded to otherwise accommodate a service line speed of 125mph?

    • @themarcusismael13
      @themarcusismael13 10 лет назад +1

      They abandoned the four track options - for stations at least and most corridors - after communities responded negatively to them, hence the shared railways with HSR. It could work but when HSR takes off, it'll be only a few years before we desperately need four rails to accommodate the increase in traffic.

    A suggestion - - In future equipment purchases, keep some locomotiive hauled cars and purchase dual-powered locomotives. These locomotives can go back and forth between electric power and diesel in about 90 seconds. These allow direct service between your electrified and non-electrified territory giving a no-transfer ride to people in diesel territory;and allowing expansion into new and low ridership territory without the huge financial commitment to immediate electrification. It also allows you keep your present locomotive hauled fleet and borrow/lend-out cars with other west coast systems. In New Jersey these locomotives have allowed direct service into New York City that have never before had it. A large fleet of electric only MU's is still a good idea, as these are more flexible in eveything from train length to braking, acceleration, and operating costs. They seem to allow more off-peak and late-night service as well.

    While I have nothing against electrification, I absolutely oppose the decision to use EMUs. Rather, I'd like to see locomotives like the ones Amtrak just got (the ACS-64). Or, Amtrak could sell some of their lame-duck AEM-7s and HHP-8s to Caltrain, and refurbish the gallery cars and BiLevels. EMUs are boring. I prefer locomotive-hauled trains. California High-Speed Rail can use their EMUs as they like since nothing else would work. Caltrain should stick with locomotive-hauled trains, but use electric locomotives for the SF-Tamien trains, and the MP36s south of Tamien.

      WHY YOU! NEVER CALL ME A FOAMER! THAT'S NOTHING BUT A DEROGATORY TERM TOWARDS RAILFANS AND YOU KNOW IT!!!

    • @wenchance
      @wenchance 10 лет назад +3

      Caltrain service is to simplistic to required locomotive hauled equipment. It's also safer too. Push-pull config (which is a locomotive based system) has some faults that undermine safety (See 2005 Metrolink Glendale Crash). EMUs are also more economical. Motive power distribution will save Caltrain time and money which is greatly needed for the service. Locomotive hauled trains carry dead weight that takes more energy and time to stop.
      However, Caltrain will probably still by some electric locos for maintenance of way and backups.
      It's not about being boring, it's about being efficient, which a commuter rail system has to be.
