The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

For me Vicky Carr is the only singer that can give justice to this song...this is her signature song....shes great.
The most underrated singer ever, Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion, no match for this lady, I love you Vickky!
Singing live and totally on key...a lost art!!
Absolutely ... great musicians, terrific song, and an artist of unbelievable talent when compared to today's enhanced AI technology .. not that I'm saying that's a bad thing ... everything for a time and a time for everything 😊
Pre Aotutune . . . those were the days.
Thankfully we have the internet to teach us just how things have gone awry.
yeah no auto tune here
No mic, so she was lip syncing but she is a great singer.
Vikki is one of the most underrated lady vocalists in the last 60 years. Powerful voice, nearly perfect pitch, and very expressive. This is a gem of a performance! Thanks for sharing this.
Absolutely. She has this great power, vibrato and tone.
A True beautiful lady
Well, she's widely recognized in Latin America because of her songs in Spanish, a truly icon. 🎉
Thanks for posting the underrated “ comment “ that can be found on every music video. Vikki Carr won 3 Grammys, the Lifetime Achievement Award, appeared on Johnny Carson over 30 times and referred to by Dean Martin as the the best in the business. Oh yeah she has a star on Hollywood Walk of Fame. Yeah I would say she’s underrated
@@white1sox1 In today's world? You'd better believe she's underrated. In fact she's all but forgotten by the masses. While I agree that Vikki was a huge star in her day I'd bet that if you asked 100 people under the age of 30 who Vikki Carr is you'd get 100 blank stares. Therefore underrated and under appreciated.
What a powerful song! Vicky is magical. She conveys so much emotion! WOW!
the strength of her voice reminds me of Shirley Bassey...two legends on our time. Awesome performance...one of my favorite songs
I like her voice more its sweet but powerful
Yes a bit of Shirley, another talented lovely lady !!
When it comes to such great old music. Thank goodness for the internet.
Her song might bring tears to my eyes, but I feel good when I listen to that song. She sang it with complete gusto. I felt like Vikki Carr put a lot of feeling into her song. The song is worth listening to. Her song on the Ed Sullivan show was played 3 days before I was born. I was born on January 3, 1968. I could feel the sensuality out of her mouth when she sings that song. It's her song I can't ignore.
A true lady of the song and the scene in the United States and Latin America. Possessing a prodigious voice, although she began her career singing in English in the 60's, in the 70's she returned to her origins (she is of Mexican descent, as she is still alive) and began recording in Spanish both alone and with emerging and established stars such as Julio Iglesias, Ana Gabriel or Danny Rivera, helping to cement the growing musical presence of Latin artists or artists of Latin origin on the stages of the United States.
Eydie Gorme, of Sephardic Jewish ancestry is still a much loved singer in Spanish.
Vikki is amazing! She's just 27 years old here with perfect power, pitch, control, and beauty!! And she's not afraid to tell the world how much she loves her man. BRAVO!
What an awesome gut wrenching performance!! Song still hits home and pulls at my heart strings even after all these years, but it also reminds me I did make it, I picked the pieces off the floor, I put my heart on the shelf again. You really can survive a broken heart. You never forget, but you learn to live with it.
So true
likewise..
My parents would play this on the stereo and dance in the living room. I always loved this song, but to be honest after seeing her on TV I had a huge crush on her.
Ms. Carr was a cryer . I was always entranced by her expression of sincere emotion . She and Judy Garland were so similar as vocalist. Both had indefinable talent .
Ladies and gentleman, the great Florencia Vicenta de Casillas Martínez Cardona teaching a lesson not only on how to sing, but how to make you feel emotions with her music!
Mexicans love her!!!
@@jorgefernandez-tv1fsItalians too.. my father loved het..
I almost forgot what a great singer she is. She also released several albums in Spanish that were really great. She was really popular in the 60’s and 70’s. I believe she is considered one of the most successful Latin artists of that time period.
There has never been anybody who could sing this song as well as Vikki and for sure there will never be anybody who can sing it better than her. This is truly her song. The reason that this is such a great song is because of the incredible energy and passion that she sang this song with. She sang this song like her life depended on it. She was not only incredibly talented but also beautiful. Only someone very special could inspire such a song about them. Most of us can only dream about someday having somebody who loves us in such an unconditional manner.
Having a major nostalgic moment are we? I was about 8 when this song came out, but the lyrics are melodramatic nonsense but sung by an excellent singer. The Carpenters came out a few years later and did much better...then Whitney in the 80s, Mariah in the 90s. The list of amazing singers is long.
Oh well, life before answering machines and cell phones. My mom used to do the funniest "take" on this song - it kept me in stitches as a young kid. Mom is now 86, and in dementia - I so I enjoy the memories. P.S. Vikki Carr was (and still is) wonderful.
Oh my! Vikki's live performance is better than the studio version. Vikki's got the pipes and the phrasing is perfection! 🤩
The mark of a true talent is how he or she performs live. I've had the privilege of seeing her perform live a dozen or more times. Even today she doesn't disappoint.
Whitney Houston, Vikki Carr, Shirley Bassey OMG these ladies were the electric sound for me ❤️
A beautiful woman with an outstanding voice and knockout natural vocal style.
One of the greatest vocal performances in modern pop music. I can’t even imagine how difficult this song must be to sing, and yet she belts it out without even breaking a sweat.
The original song written by Gilbert Becaud from France is called SEUL SUR SON ETOILE.....BUT....Mr Becaud loved the way Vikki Carr sang his song and he recorded the song in English and he called it IT MUST BE HER.
I remember watching this when I was a child. I loved it and remembered all the words to this song. So great hearing it again.
Glad to see it! Ed mentioned this performance when introducing "With Pen in Hand" a few weeks ago. Ed also said it was written by Gilbert Bécaud. Originally, it was "Seul Sur Son Étoile" (Alone on your Star) with French lyrics by Maurice Vidalin. The English lyrics are by Mack David who was the brother of Hal David of Bacharach/David fame. Most famously, Mack also did the English lyrics for Piaf's "La Vie En Rose" and was much praised for that effort.
It is one of those cases in which when the adaptation is made, the lyrics change completely, moving away from the original...
@@edufau815 Oui, the French lyrics are much darker.
In the 1960s, my mom listened to easy listening WRTH in St.Louis in the evening, and this song always seemed to be playing.
Great song. Describes how I felt when I was in a relationship in high school. Teenagers have such strong feelings! TY for sharing this. God Bless You & stay safe.
Ms VIKKI has been my favorite lady singer since I was18. I'm 78 now and still enjoy spinning my vinel 331/3. I have most of her english records. Still the best voice.
Vikki Carr is sooo under appreciated by our fickle American Culture, or lack of it. And Sullivan's adult audience applauded nicely when they should have been on their feet cheering.
The audience must have been tone deaf not to appreciate the quality of this lady's singing.
h 00:21, : In color or in black and white, Vikki Carr has a rare charm, to be found in the variegated musical World.- ( Aldo from Verona, Italy ).-🇮🇪 ❤️❤️❤️.-
The musical tune for this song is so pleasant.
Just a killer chorus that really hits home. What a New Years Eve treat for the audience in 1967.
Rhythm section right out front, the way it should be.
Realmente, muy afortunados el público que pudo ver tanto talento aquella vez
What a bone-chilling performance. She really knows how to take a song to it's limits
16:40 , 26/4/2023, : …Vikki smiles again, when “ I’ll find somebody else, someday…” ( Aldo from Verona, Italy.-🇮🇹 💚🤍❤️.-
Since I first saw her on Ed Sullivan all those years ago, I’ve thought she was a gorgeous woman with a gorgeous voice!
What an emotional performance. I'm a 67yr old chap with a tear in my eye. ❤
"Or I shall die...." !-- Camp Classic!
Talent.
Elle chante avec son coeur
Nice song!! Great voice!
She sings like an angel, real emotion!
Bravo!! Bravo 👏
Pipes ….❤
this song is beautiful.
Vicky was a great singer ! Beautiful & Classy !
Mexican American beauty !!
Had her record played it over and over
She is simply magnificent!
yes she is!
I was at this show at the Ed Ullivan Theater. I was allowed to spend the entire week watching rehearsals and the final showing Sunday afternoon. The primary performers that week was Steve Lawrence and Eedie Gorme. On that show were (my favorite) The Lenin Sisters, the cast of the play "Hair", and an act that I thought would never make it. They were The Muppets.
My 2 friends and I were the only people in the Theater during the entire week of rehearsals. Edie Gorme yelled at me for whispering during her rehearsal of the song LOVE. Memories.
HOW GORGEOUS IS THAT DRESS
What a classy lady. Where has it all gone?
what an incredibly intense and beautiful voice.
Watched the movie "Moonstruck" several times just to hear this song
Love Vicki.
Superb!!!!
Vikki carr and Shirley Bassey, just two of my all time favourite singers, I love them both.
I always loved this song, only i was a kid at the time 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Grande Vicky Carr
😊
I grew up in the 60s watching her sing this song on The Ed Sullivan Show. But what I only found out about 5 years ago, is that she was full-blooded Mexican, born and raised in El Paso. She spoke Spanish and had many Spanish-only albums. Of course, back then she had to assume the name Vikki Carr, changing it from Florencia Bisenta de Casillas-Martinez Cardona. She wouldn't have been as easily accepted back then had she used her real name. One of the best pop female singers of all time.
Vikki car I love you.
I am old enough to remember when this was the Ed Sullivan which we saw every Sunday . And one of my aunts was a swinger in my old hometown of NYC during the Mad Men era of the 1960s. She went to discotheques and nightclubs in Times Square! 😊
I always think of the movie "Moon Struck" when Cher's father plays this song everytime he would return home in the movie.....:)!
Heerlijk om te horen
I always loved to hear Vicky Carr sing this song...
Vikki!!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I really like this performance and I always liked Vikki Carr. In any case I see that she was not given very much of a stage set and decor--no large decorative curtains, no floodlights, and no small circular type stage. . In the same era, 1967-68, watch Petula Clark and Lana Cantrell performances on the Ed Sullivan Show and you'll see the difference. I like Petula Clark and Lana Cantrell just as much as Vikki Carr. I just feel that Vikki Carr should have gotten a better deal.
To everyone in the comments section of this video, I just watched Lana Cantrell sing 'Yesterday When I Was Young.' which she performed on the Ed Sullivan Show back in October 1969. Her singing performance really stunk. I remember seeing her on Ed Sullivan back in '69 and remember thinking how lousy she was. I said I liked Lana Cantrell--well no more. In any case , Vikki Carr continues to be lovely.
She’s alone at home. Waiting for that call. Even in the dark. That’s the best set/performance I’ve ever seen on Ed’s show. Or we wouldn’t be in tears with her even now almost 60 years later.
She looks lovely. Excellent voice.
OMG! What a beautiful voice...
Beautiful....
Happy first day of Spring! 🌷
Happy Monday... thank you for sharing! 💖
Wow, what a voice. Powerhouse.
What a voice , and such a pretty gal . Remember her in the ‘70’s , and that she played Vegas quite often .
Esta canción es de lo más bello, un gran beso a Viky Carr❤
lamentablemente nuestra querida Vicky Carr dejo este mundo hace un par de meses
@@55102 Que el cielo la acoja y le lleguen mis bendiciones ❤️😘
Pure class
The use of her performance of this song in the movie Moonstuck is iconic!
Iconic 🤣
That’s how I found out who Vicki was. The woman’s voice was so impressive I had to find out who sung it!
What a first-class act! The whole song was sung live so perfectly that I thought she was lip-synching. A true talent along with Barbra Streisand.
Qué emoción provoca esta fabulosa voz. Puro arte.
voz super hermosa.................................
“ truly the angel’s best “
Vikki stunning beauty and the voice of an angel.
Instantly able to transition from Spanish into English and back in perfect form.
So much really GREAT music such as this used to be played all the time! It's unbelieveable how bad modern music is today, Young people today just don't even know what good music is.
Very simple they actually could sing then. These early artist put in thousands of hours growing up to getting their vocal cords to hit these notes. Do you think they do that today? Ya right good luck with that!
Totally agree
☺️
I totally agree, Guy Anderson!
@@dpaulwilliams309 ☺️
She was always very underrated in America. Such an incredible talented voice. 💕
She has a special place in Heaven
Precious 💞
That set looks like it came from furniture department at Macy's...... She is amazing!
my mother had this on the LP stereo non-stop it seemed when I was 7 yrs old. It was her favorite song.
Love he version of Sunday Morning Coming Down ❤
esa forma de cantar tiene...........un capricho del cielo.........................................................
❤❤❤
One of my favs....
One of the greatest love songs I ever heard. Enhanced by this superb voice. Touches the depths of my soul with every song she sings.
First class singer. God bless her!
I truly love this song and this performance...
Sensationalist Voice, Absolutely Lovely to hear her sing, True Talent and singing from Her Heart ❤
God bless her
Beyond "iconic", beyond "signature". I recall at that time, many others tried singing this song, but nobody came close to Vikki Carr. Further, although she sang some other songs, no other came close to being her greatest hit.
My grandmother Hildy loved this song. It’s why I love old music! I remember her playing it… amazing what we remember. I was about 7 at the time. RIP grandmom. Rest in Love! 1924-2007!
Wow increíble ❤
Vikki was one of the main stars on Liberty records, I have one of her '45's from 1966. Incredible voice.
First time hearing this and I love it!
Bella música, excelente cantante Vikky Carr, desde Honduras, Centroamérica. 👏👏👏🇭🇳
O dear God what an emotional song and a christal beautiful voice 😍😍😍
"Now he's gonna play that damn Vikki Carr record and when he comes to bed he won't touch me".....the always terrific Olympia Dukakis
in the great movie Moonstruck....
I thought of "Moonstruck" too!
Fantastic performance
Wooooooo weeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!
Had forgotten what a great voice she had.
