Rock originated in the UK. The Rolling Stones are considered the first rock band and "I can't get no satisfaction" is considered the first rock song in music history. The US had Rock'n'Roll, but that's not Rock. Rock'n'Roll uses a different beat, influenced by blues music Rock music instead uses a typical European beat. The Stones and the Kinks brought Rock music to the US, where it was immediately copied by other artists.

What is “better” is subjective but American music is a lot more diverse than Lauren realizes. We listen to Blues, R&B, Jazz, Country, Broadway, Bluegrass and much more. Actually a lot of genres including rock originated in the USA with black people. IDK why she is claiming rock as being British? American culture is heavily African influenced not just European influenced. I actually thought this was common knowledge. This whole discussion sounds super Anglo-centric. Breaking news: A lot of us Americans are not white.
Adele and a lot of UK singers purposely sing in American accent I think to widen their appeal. The thing about Beyonce is that while she has party music, she also makes music with social commentary which to my knowledge Adele doesn’t. For example she has a song called Brown Skin Girl that uplifts women across the world with darker skin. That song strikes more of a chord with me than Rolling In the Deep although I like Adele. My whole life I’ve loved Bee Gees, George Michael, Phil Collins, Elton John, Rolling Stones, Craig David. I saw Ed in concert. It’s actually the female UK artists I tend to not be as into but I like Joss Stone, Amy Winehouse, Sade, Natasha Whatherface, Dua Lipa.
I have noticed some UK artists like Ella Mai actually use a lot of US slang in their lyrics.

    • @w00tz4ibanez

The punk movement is pretty distinctly British and still holds an edge in the art/fashion/music coming out of there (eg Alexander McQueen with fashion, etc) and music is a big part of that scene- and then also on other rock spectrum is the Beatles and Rolling Stones as well as Pink Floyd- many countries around the world outside of US grew up with British rock more than American, so I’d agree that they have that edge and influence there. That’s for boomers. Milenialls and Gen Z shifted American internationally (probably because R&B is phenomenally influential).
Absolutely there is so much incredible music from the US- jazz, blues, hip hop, r&b, bluegrass… and many of those elements (particularly blues for rock and r&b for pop) holds an influence in UK as well since people borrow elements. There are also lots of American musicians borrowing from British (influenced from Pink Floyd etc)
One thing I have noticed that’s different for sure in movies is the humor is different, but that’s so subjective. And for cinematography/filming In the UK there is less obsession on “perfection” which I prefer, for example people don’t always look perfectly styled down to the last detail, interiors don’t look like a set, etc, seems more relaxed and authentic compared to US shows & films.

I think it’s great to have creative collaboration. i was in New Orleans went to see a group of Peruvian Jazz musicians play a concert. Beautiful how music connects people. But I think claiming something as your culture is another layer. Example, I love reggae. I listen to reggae. But I wouldn’t call it part of “my culture” . Lauren’s comments like oh you have hip hop and country. British rock music is a by product of American rock music.meanwhile there is a lot that we have absorbed from the UK. But I feel like some UK people like to think we are a UK part 2 when it’s not that simple. The percentage of non Europeans living in the UK is greatly different from the percentage in the US. Maybe the discussion should be what product we think is better rather than what culture but that is subjective. If people are touchy it’s because for a long time music and other things associated with black Americans were looked down upon. Then they put a white person like Elvis who would go hang out in juke joints with black people to sing the same music and it’s not only acceptable but then before long the story of Rock and Roll ceases to have black people in it. Minorities in the USA and their contributions are often overlooked.

For awhile Hollywood just seemed like they wanted to blow things up and make the plot secondary. So I won’t act like I love everything we put out. But I do get to sometimes see my own culture black rural Southern reflected in our films so that’s a bias for me. As a child I watched Helena Bonham Carter movies. I like the period pieces like Downton Abbey but a lot of the more modern stuff I can’t get into. Here in the USA they would show Ms Marple and Inspector Poiroit. Now I loved some Benny Hill as a kid. Lol I can see more now with Netflix but I actually like shows from Spain more than England. I did watch Top Boy and there is an old show called Desmond’s I think that was really funny. I love Lauren SO MUCH but rock and all that did not start in the UK it was made by people in the US, let alone made from BLACK PEOPLE. Also other people of color. Not to mention having two white people talk about culture esp for the US is kinda weird. Shannon held it down for the US but even she knows and showed with that eye roll that this was a far fetched video. America has about 4-5 TIMES the amount of people in the UK. Not to mention 87% of ppl in the UK are White... compared to Americans dramatic diversity of all races and different cultures. You'll see a whole lot of Indians or middle easterns in the USA way faster than in the UK. (not personally to Lauren, much love) But the fact that Lauren thinks some of these started in the UK is an unfortunate representation of how black and other minorities have been stolen from. Much respect to UK culture and its diversity... but the US is WAY TOO BIG and DIVERSE by miles compared to the UK to compare "american culture." @Tyree k. Unless I'm missing something I think your wrong. White English bands like The Beatles for example are not that same kind of sounds that was coming out of black Americans Rock & Roll music like Little Richard. Rock & Roll isn't the same as Rock music, it's dance music. If guitar isn't the prominent instrument it isn't rock music. A lot of Rock & Roll is piano and saxophones. Rock came out of Rockabilly & Pop Rock. Rockabilly & Pop Rock came out of Rock & Roll and County. Rock & Roll came out of Boogie Woogie & Blues. Country came out of white American folk culture. There was a combination and progression of white European instruments & culture combined with black Americans culture. These sounds didn't spring up from Europe or Africa. No other races really influenced American culture in those beginnings since there were hardly any other races here at that time besides American whites and blacks. There is no stealing of culture from blacks or other minorities. The misconception is the definition of what Rock music is. If this was about Ragtime, Blues, Rock (& Roll), R&B, Boogie Woogie, Doo-Wop, Funk, Hip Hop and they said the U.K. invented that then you would be right.

    • @alexandrareuter327
      @alexandrareuter327 Год назад

I guess it depends on how you define 'a small few UK artists'... There are and always have been loads of British musicians and bands that are massive in the US (and the rest of the world). And some of them were hugely influential like Bowie or the Beatles. If you look up the list of best selling music artists of all time on wikipedia, of all the artists who managed to sell over 250 million records, 3 are American and 5 are British.
I'm from Germany and to me it is pretty damn impressive that such a (comparably) small country has been this influential in the music industry. Lower down on the list you can find more American ones but still a fair amount of British artists. And the British music industry is pretty diverse too, maybe some of the more interesting stuff just doesn't make it to the US? Don't get me wrong, I love loads of American musicians but considering that the US is much, much bigger, the British music industry is kinda more impressive for its size.
And as for the British film industry... I think you'd be surprised. It's booming. It has recently seen much more growth than the American one. It's actually becoming a real competitor. And that is just looking at stats and predictions about things like studio space and box office. Back when I studied film, British films would on average get higher ratings in reviews than Hollywood films. Some would consider critical acclaim more important than box office or quantity. That was a few years ago though so I don't know if it's still accurate today.

That is why the British actors are everywhere in American productions as well, on the whole they tend to be much more skilled. In the US they have the classic "dream of becoming an actor" where people from all over the country just move to LA and try to become an actor. Some make it (largely based on luck and/or looks, not to completely disregard talent), but on the whole it not exactly conducive to good performances. I think the United States and Great Britain have influenced each other for our benefit. We had rhythm and blues and early rock and roll such as Elvis, who influenced the Beatles. There are other great British bands in the late sixties and early 70s. The UK also gave the world the Rolling Stones, The Who, led Zeppelin deep purple and Black Sabbath. They gave the Sex Pistols and we gave the Ramones. We gave the world Disco. They gave us Iron Maiden Judas Priest and the rest of the new wave of British heavy metal in the late seventies and early eighties. And that inspired Metallica and similar bands. I haven't even scratched the surface of pop culture, pop music and fashion. We're incredibly grateful for Simon Pegg and Nick Frost by the way (just had to throw that in there). In all seriousness, I would never want to compare our cultures. England gave us the concept of the magna Carta and the Parliament, which influenced us. British philosopher John Locke heavily inspired our Thomas Jefferson and other founding fathers. And thanks to Scotland, I have several kilts hanging in my wardrobe as well. Altho i agree that they may have influenced eachother but for the most part they really havent. Another example (how hip pop started) is Jazz music. Which again is another African american root but is now world wide and is losing its root acknowledgement. Ive only mentioned one culture but this can apply to the Mexican-Americans, the Asian Americans, and on and on.

Depending on the genre, it’s the norm for the singer not to be the songwriter. I have friends who make a living writing songs for other people. I also write and record songs. It’s not uncommon for labels to have writers on staff. Also it’s not necessarily that writers are writing for a particular artist. They write the song, make a demo, then pitch it around trying to get what’s called a cut. But that’s very hard to do without connections. Probably the songwriters in your country have traveled to the USA and hustled to make connections in the industry

If we are talking about culture, we are talking about popular music history, not current. If that is the case, then unquestionably the Brits have superior culture in the world. they can rival the US in famous artists and the country has 25%, of the population.
The world0 best selling artists are the Beatles, Elvis, Led Zeppelin, Queen, Rod Stewart, the Rolling Stones, Madonna, Pink Floyd, Elton John, Michael Jackson,The Bee Gees, the who
    Most of those are British
What else is culture? If you are talking about sports most of Non-American mainstream popular sports originated in UK e.g. football, rugby, Cricket, golf, boxing (Internationally recognised prizefighting),Badminton, table tennis, F1. 3 of the top 6 popular sports in the US, are derivative of sports originating in the UK (American Football, ice hockey, baseball)
Everyone's culture is special, in its own little way, there shouldnt be discussion with "best" as a term, At all!

Hard for me to say because I listen I like Cold Play, Bush, U2, but I am also into Green Day, Red Hot Chili Peppers. The rock bands I have gone to see most are Better Than Ezra and Cowboy Mouth which have had some mainstream success but mostly low key in the New Orleans area. I listen to a lot of local bands. I also like a lot of alternative rock Gin Blossoms and grunge rock like Foo Fighters and Nirvana. I like pretty much all genres but I can only take bluegrass in doses.

TLDR: The US' culture is more relevant around the world thanks in large part to WWII. Prior to WWII, the US, Europe, and Russia had more cultural impact than the US. Ranking is subjective.
Ranking is subjective. But impact can be measured. The US has a more impactful culture because WWII left Europe in disarray and the US's Marshall plan and global institutions. There is also an element to our less-regulated markets leading to more innovation in media and fashion. But that comes with more pollution, disease, homelessness, and less-well being amongst the citizens.
The UK had more cultural strength prior to WWII when it was aggressively colonial. At the turn of the 20th century, the US was mostly ignored. In US cities at the time, Paris, London, Vienna, and Moscow culture was top-class.

90% of the most popular "American" music is actually Swedish written/produced or have very much tried to emulate that. I would say very rarely does the US music scene influence the UK one except for the tennis game of rock/metal music taking a lot of influence from the African American music genres and going back and forth, as well as I guess rap music. The Swedish music producers have had a MASSIVE influence on popular music for decades. They have exerted that influence on the US market and that has bled over into the UK (and the world). But I dont think it is fair to say necessarily that that makes it American. These same producers have written and produced many/most of the biggest hits for the likes of Taylor Swift (who fair enough does a fair bit of her own writing I believe), Katy Perry, The Weeknd, Britney Spears.

Firstly, almost every major genre of music (country, blues, jazz, rock, techno funk, disco, rap, r&b, etc) was created in America by black people. Secondly, watch any tiktok from around the world and everyone is using AAVE (African-American Vernacular English). For example, phrases like "periodt" and "on site". I like that you guys try to share cultures but I feel it's in a very surface level, homogenized way that only plays to sterotypes and ignores huuuuuge populations in society.
