- This is a simple plaster mold from which I will make a latex pull. The process is great for half masks and any sculpt with minimal undercuts. This sleeping cat will be animated to seem to breathe and have a flipping tail.
So happy to see a new RUclips Wednesday. Allen, I learned the craft part of haunting by spending a year watching and rewatching your videos. You got me interested in leatherwork, sculpting, mask and mold making, costume work; the list goes on forever. I love Halloween, but not as much as I love learning and employing new creative techniques... the way of making things. YTW has been a very important resource in that regard.
How did I ever miss this vid? So glad to see a new vid from StiltBeast.
Really good to have you back sir. You've been missed.
Super, super, SUPER cool. Thanks, and keep 'em comin'!
I always love to watch you because you are very talented but also, you totally crack me up!! I love your sense of humor! ! So funny! I look forward to the next one.
love it!! didn't realize how much i've missed your videos till last weeks hangout :) tfs
My favorite internet cat video! I can't wait to see the next steps!
'Buy it by the giant tub, and don't answer any questions from the cashier' ROFL! Great work!
Thanks Allen! HIGHLY informative and absolutely giggle-worthy, as always! :-) -Pandora
I love your videos. This one was very informative in the process.
Very cool! Can't wait to see the final product.
I'll express my joy when I finish giggling.
Thanks that was very informative! Can't wait to checkout your other videos!
+Cacie Simon Please do!
greatly informative and beautiful work
+Liz Mallory thank you, I hope you like the channel.
damn that make everything seem so much easier then the other tutorials I've seen !! thanks for sharing ...I'm thinking i can do something like that and feel more comfortable doing it ... would you use the same application with a more detailed mold ?? HFL!!
Thanks for the video! Could I use a plaster mold with an oil clay sculpture?
If I do use oil based clay do I need to seal my sculpture?
What kind of plaster do you use? Ultracal/ stone? Or plaster of Paris?
Plano Tx, eh? Awesome. A fellow Texan.
yes you can use plaster with Oil based clay.
yes you should seal your sculpt
I use Ultracal 30.
God blessed Texas!
Love your work here - have you made a video of the cat sculpt itself? And do you instruct on just how to sculpt for a successful mold afterwards? Thanks for your reply.
+Joanne Gennarella I did make a video on that- its one of my sculpture studio videos- that were done live on a google hang out.
Hey Allen need to know if I can melt the vasolein and if so how long should I melt it for
Thanks for the clarity of your instructions. I'm about to mold a full head mask WED clay sculpt as a one-piece Ultracal mold to obtain rubber latex masks. My dummy inside is collapsible, so it should be fine. I've done it before, about a decade ago, but my clay was such a mess to clean off! I was weary of starting without knowing for sure which sealer to use on the clay, and how to ensure the proper thickness everywhere. Thanks! If you'd like to see the sculpt, it's the latest video in my RUclips channel. Thanks again for helping so many of us by taking the time to share!
+Creaturiste I highly recommend a two piece mold as opposed to a one piece- but I will look at the sculpt.
+Creaturiste Nice sculpt! I want to catch it!
+StiltbeastStudios Thanks! The mold is made and successful thanks to your advice. It only took about an hour to remove the clay. I went with the old one-piece approach despite the risk, because I HATE seaming latex mold lines. Too much work, even with a Dremel and solvents, and it's NEVER perfect. IT would have been a disaster over all these scales. Plus, my Dremel is dead.
Glad it turned out well!
before you make your last, 3rd batch, of thick plaster you mentioned letting the previous coat cure. Does this mean you let it rest for more than 20-30 minutes or until it got hard enough for the final coat?
UsedTissue just 20- 30 min is fine.
I'm using pottery clay how long do I let it dry before I can mold it
what material did you cast it with. BTW excellent video.
+stephen Koludrovic I made a few latex pulls.
awesome thanks for sharing✌
one day i am going to give this a try.....
I laughed when you put on gloves, and applied lotion! Who's this guy? :)
When you let the first coat and first blanket coat dry before adding heavier layers doesn't one risk getting stress cracks in the interior of the mold? I feel pressure to do everything in one big run of plaster because I got such bad stress cracks in the interior of the mold doing it in layers....hmm....
depends pn the plaster- yes for hydrocal but not really for ultracal.
@@StiltbeastStudios thank you so much
Hi! do you think painting a layer of lubricating oil on a wood will help me remove the model without destroying the original , or I will need something different for wood.
kmtmc07 - making a mold of a rigid model is very different than making a mold of a soft model. If you are making a model of a rigid thing like a wooden or concrete statue, then you will need to make a flexible mold. I would make a silicone or rubber mold.
Thank you.
Thank you
Where do you get your ultra cal 30?
Awesome! Will we get to see the finished product?
Yes you will.
StiltbeastStudios Where's the finished kitty / video?
Its coming!
I don't comment often but your tips were very helpful. Does it matter what clay is used?
+Liz Mallory the type of clay only determines how it is removed. I like water based because I can use a power washer to thoroughly clean the mold. some clays like Monster makers you need to heat it a bit or use solvents to get it clean.
thanks for getting back to me. this may sounds ridiculous but can play-doh be used? (I have so much of it bc of the kids and all my years of playing and creating with them has made me quite good with it). I would be doing things on a smaller scale than your magnificent cat
sure it could be used, Im just not sure how (aside from by hand) to clean it out of the mold.
ok great! I was worried about the moisture content or something. As far as cleaning it out- I'm a play-doh BEAST! so I won't fret over that
Don't always drink but when I do Disaronno!
indeed!
is there any way to mold without ruining my clay sculpttre im using never drying clay from craft smart plastiline
+jason mooney silicone is much gentler on the sculpt than plaster is, and I have had the sculpts survive in tact.
Haunts aren't really a thing where I live but I fucking love that stuff so I started making probs for myself, just to look at them. My mum isn't very pleased. :D But I can't let you teach us this awesome stuff and then not use the knowledge, right?
here kitty kitty!! :)
Petroleum...hahaha, cheeky
this guy is a joke.
no you are not you are cool
How is that? What dont you like or agree with? I make my living making monsters so I take them very serious, what is the joke? Maybe its something I can fix for you.
@@StiltbeastStudios read second comment :)
@@christiano3819 Didnt see that on the first pass- did you change your mind mid video lol?
@@StiltbeastStudios naa Im just full of surprises :) have a great weekend! Thanks for the content
