I think Edamane seems to Laurant as a younger version of himself:
Laurant is constantly manipulating the situation and taking genuine risks (his plans are often described as sloppy by the others), but usually with the goal of helping the other members of the crew emotionally.
Sure he's in it for the money and charismatic and relaxed enough to be in it for the thrills, but if you rewatch the show watching Laurant specifically you see that he often creates the exact situations needed for the others to move forward.
After all, its telling that the gang always seem to act as surrogate Robin Hoods, stealing from those who genuinely seek to profit from others losses, essentially acting as a force for justice behind the law's back.
Edamane himself wants to align himself with the famous heroes he gets as figurines throughout the series, and generally sees a life of crime as running counter to that desire to help people.
But inevitably as the various schemes unfold throughout the show, and Edamura becomes more personally invested, he inevitably engages more with the plan with the sole desire of orchestrating situations where the right people win and the wrong people lose... a trait Laurant seems to share.
There's little confirming this directly but innuendo and implication, but I get the sense that Laurant was once very similar to Edamura: he wanted to be a hero who helped people and punished evil-doers, but after meeting the real unfairness of... well REALITY, as well as establishing his own talent for Deceit, he realised he could do more good (and turn more of a profit) by treating the law as guidelines and making reality what he wanted it to be.
Sure, Edamura always ends each scheme 'going straight', but inevitably he ends up doing the most good when he intervenes in a plot, such as
    **SPOILERS**
Ensuring Salazar was saved in the first arc (as well as giving him some really good Dad advice), helping Abby, Clarke AND his rival move forward (a risk to the operation that Laurant foresaw, implying he intended Edamura to intervene) in the second and finally switching the paintings so that Thomas' work could actually be appreciated for its value and in general helping Thomas and Cynthia get some closure in the third.
Sure he often screws up and can come across as a whiner, Edamura's my favourite character: he's the moral center of both the show AND the crew. THAT'S why they keep him around.

That’s me... I found it more special. I loved this show and now am hype for the (final?) arc. I usually don’t do absolutes when it comes to my views of movies or shows. (Atla was good but not perfect, Korra isn’t bad but it is a bit disappointing at times, demon slayer isn’t one of the new great shonens it is just good, and MHA isn’t the best show.) I have a very middle opinion when it comes to things, but I do have favorites. And this?! This is one of my new fav. It’s all the good stuff that you pointed out, but never cared or even realized problems that you also pointed out. I feel bad that you said that it was not a great show. But homie, I don’t care! On Edamura character development stagnation, so far, from I have seen. This idea that he will outwit Laurent because he will grow is a trend on Great Pretender's head writer, Ryōta Kosawa's style. Ryōta Kosawa's other work like in Legal High (a drama about lawyers fighting to win court cases) has a similar dynamic between Edamura and Laurent's between its lead character. A mentor and mentee relationship, however by the series end, even though it may looks like the mentee has outgrown the mentor, the status quo still remain the same as the mentor actually still outwit the mentee. I am afraid that by the end of Wizard of Far East, this relationship between Laurent and Edmaura remains the same

This is the first time I strongly disagree with the assessment of this show. This is not only a good and entertaining anime, but i believe it to be a great anime and might be deserving a "certified frosty" rating. The animation might not be the best out there but it just fits with theme (and honestly, this style is refreshing for me). The soundtrack in the background is beautifully timed on the story's progression reminiscent to the style of the great cowboy bebop. The characters are easily to fall in love with and be invested to them. The dialogue, the plot, the many twist and turns is simply great which hooks you to watch another episode. I think this anime should be in the top tier for this genre like lupin the third.

Just finished watching the rest of the series (don’t call the cops,) and I must say GS is putting the cart before the horse considering all the other arcs except the first are character specific arcs. Edamura and Laurent get their arc in the last 9 episodes which is where nost of Edamura’s developement as a character is.

Wizard of Far East does remedy most of these issues. And also tbh, I don’t think it’s “pretending to be a good show” I think that just sounds cool, I think it’s just a really good show.

Now that the rest of the series has aired, have your thoughts on edamura's involvement the way that it is, changed at all? I feel like the final arc or "season 2" puts everything into perspective extremely well, and it shows why laurent was so insistent on involving edamura in everything

I'm sorry, but I highly disagree. Great pretender IS a GREAT if not potential CLASSIC anime. It's being slept on for god knows what reason. I haven't been in love with an anime like I have with this one in a long time. It's clever in all the right ways, charming and has so few flaws that it's not even worth typing them. I love it, I wish YOU waited until it was streaming the ENTIRE season. Would love to know if that changed anything for you because it should have.
People don't sleep on this show it's amazing.

I'm in need of some help, the song "fly" or "fly high like a bird" (not the beatles song) is stuck in my head and I've tried to search for it everywhere. It's played here and there, in the pilot episode at the airport and a lot in the episode with the Arabic brothers. Please help! Cookies will be granted.
