The miserable life and long-overdue death of thrill killer Charles Starkweather is the basis of the two-part TV movie Murder in the Heartland. Over a bloody few months in 1958, Starkweather (Tim Roth), a 19-year-old high school dropout, embarked on a killing spree, snuffing out 11 victims. Along for the ride was Charlie's 14-year-old girlfriend Caril Ann Fugate (Fairuza Balk). The debate still goes on as to whether Caril Ann was a willing accomplice or a reluctant prisoner; as played by Ms. Balk, she comes off as dumb as mud. A shorter, fictionalized account of the Starkweather killings was offered in the critically acclaimed 1973 theatrical feature Badlands, starring Martin Sheen and Sissy Spacek. Tim Roth plays Archibald Cunningham and I remember that because my last name nicknme is Archie, I seriously get John Hurt and Tim Roth confused sometimes even though they don't really look like each other lol
I also used to get Tim Roth confused with Gary Oldman sometimes lol. They are all 3 such GREAT actors Hurt, Roth and Oldman. Def 3 of my favorites.

There's another one made in the 1970s (1973 I think) that's pretty good too. Badlands. They changed the names and the story quite a bit but it has Sissy Spacek and Martin Sheen as the two killers. It's actually part of the Criterion Collection of select movies.
@@gobshite5150 i felt truly sorry for the girl's long sentence.. as a minor,should have gotten a much shorter sentence.. i think it was just the sensationalism of the crime,and prosecutor was under public pressure,, after all-she did write a message- for help while in rest room[which conveniently got lost. what was your opinion.
@@johnmoran1317 It's hard to say. I do agree she was too young to be tried as an adult, she was an 8th grader wasn't she? I'm not sure if the police ever definitively said whether or not she was in the home when her family was killed or whether or not she actually knew her family was dead. But if you believe a 14 yr old kid's story who had never been in trouble before I would have to say the 17 years they ultimately gave her was a little harsh. On the other hand Starkweather - complete psychotic sociopath killing machine, he deserved the death penalty but 6 months after capture? Whoa, they need to bring that back LOL
The portion of this movie that takes place at the girls parents house was filmed across the street from my grandparents home in McKinney Texas. My grandpa repainted the house for the movie. I've been on that porch a hundred times. I remember watching the film crew daily. I was 5 years old at the time. My grandpa owns the house in the background that can be seen from the porch view as well. Crazy watching this now.

Tim Roth playing a psychopathic killer while Fairuza Balk played a young and naive 14year old girlfriend which made the story believable. Enjoyed watching this film from beginning until the end. Carol's lawyer never stopped trying to get her out of jail. She was a model prisoner. She did exactly as she was told.
Her lawyer said that showed that she wasn't a willing participant. She just always did as she was told.
Idk though. There's a lot of psychological problems there, and low IQ.
Still, not all members of the poor white trash set become serial killers.
note to self: never do anything so bad that Tim Roth and Fairuza Balk portray me & hubby in a lifetime movie. Great actors but theyboth creep me out.
i was born in that area .mom always told me about how grandpa stayed up at night with loaded shotguns , and a thompson submachine gun .being on a farm and so close to bennet ne.it makes total sence almost to bad they didn't go to my grandpas farm but good thing they didn't

This was actually a LIFETIME movie? I thought the sheer amount of violence in this totally tipped the scales for a made-for-TV movie and was almost like on the same level as horror movies!
I don't like the way that this movie portrays Caril as a victim, I totally believe that she was a willing participant in all of it. She had many chances to get away or get help and she did nothing.

I do believe that she did kill the teenage girl, Carol, because she was jealous that Charles raped her.

Brilliant performances from the two leading actors and overall a well constructed and compelling account of these incredible events. I don't know if the film won any awards but surely something was deserved.
Tim Roth portrayed the monster that Starkweather was.
First, thanks for the upload. I was struck again by how good of an actor Randy Quaid is, as he can do both comedy and drama. Ironically, his private life now also seems to be an example of "folie-a - deux." The combination of something in the personalities of two people come together and bring out a mutual insanity or behaviour.
I like how they show how caril could’ve been innocent and was a hostage and showed her as a participant, leaving us to decide whether or not she was innocent.
And the 50s had rock and roll,Indoor plumbing, television, cars too. Imagine that!
I was 7 years old in 1957 when that Douche bag did this,I remember hearing his name and thinking what a monster,I lived in Iowa not far away

Uhhh Caril put a note on the door saying they were all sick with the flu and sent her grandmother away. She sat there and ate chips and drank Pepsi with Starkweather for days. She wasn't very sad I don't think. He left her in the car alone with guns. She was young , but not completely innocent at all.
Heather Nikki she did not know her parents were dead, he told her he had them tied up and would kill them if she didn’t cooperate. She was 14 and gullible.
I grew up in the neighborhood where her mother and step father lived and were murdered to this day where the house stood is just an empty field.

As a fellow harmonica player I love the use of harmonica throughout, Bravo! I've always wondered why victims don't take radical action like jump out windows, scream out loud in restaurants vs giving in to abductors' threats and remaining quiet, the last place one wants to be is alone with an abductor.
Tim Roth delivered it brilliantly.

I was lead to this movie after see no evil 😭 it is such a incredibly horrible history event. I have not heard of this story. Just started the movie and looking forward to watching it through. Is this girl in any other new movies!!? I swear I have only seen her in the craft and now this. She is so unique. I really enjoy her as a actress!! :)

I guarantee you that LOTS of people (likely including some who were murdered) made fun of him. Of course that doesn't begin to condone what he did... but why do we as a society never want to admit that although we can't control or be to blame for others' actions, we still have to be held accountable for what we do choose to do and say. It isn't about criminalizing victims but about being aware that the words we say do affect people more than we know or want to admit.
Kari Skinner . Well said!! . Because there's been so many murderers over the years that have done this due to deep cold rage through being cruelly taunted by many people over a period of time. I'm not condoning the murderers actions either , but long term emotional abuse does have negative effects on people ,,one way or the other .. .
He was mercilessly made fun of when he started school because he was short and bow legged. It is sad he was happy playing with his brothers as a little boy but then so made fun of and bullied and unhappy and hating the world.

@@susanb2015 Most of the people that knew him said he was very nice and and kind until about 1956. When he started to change some, but if he liked you even then he would do anything for you. I understand what he went through in school because i went through the same thing. I had a speech problem that i was able too over come in time, and i also had eye problems that eventually cleared up because i wore glasses. Kids would pick at me constantly about these things and call me all kinds of names. No one likes being called stupid, and when Charlie quit his job at the warehouse, i am sure he knew what people thought of him. His own boss called him stupid. I went through this torment until i started to withdraw and became hateful and bitter. I also had a girl i liked who's parents did not like me at all because i dressed in denim or leather and rode a motorcycle. probably looked like a beat neck too them. She liked me though. I was 17 at the time and she was 13 or 14. Thing came to a head a little later when i decided that my latest tormentors had to go. I had had enough. I took my fathers rifle and hid it in a box that some pool que's had come in, strapped it too my bike and went to school. One of the teachers who was concerned about me and whom i liked ask what was in the box out in the parking lot, and i told him. I thank God often for that teacher being out there that morning, his name was Dave. I do not condone what Charlie did, but i do understand how he felt. He said it was between him and God as too what he done, and what people thought didn't matter anymore. Charlie gave up trying. If he had had the kind of help i had, instead of the ignorance and backwardness he was surrounded with, he would have been alright. I sincerely hope, and i believe he did make his peace with God. I myself might have turned this way had it not been for that teacher, i joined the Army a month later. I eventually learned to forgive my tormentor's and life has not been that bad. Charlies short and troubled life should be used as an example of what not to do to people who are different in some way's. Either help them or be a friend, or leave them alone, i know because i went through it.

When they went into that mansion, remember the rich woman was upstairs on the phone? Ok, then the woman went downstairs to get something to eat for her dog and found out Starkweather was in the house. Then she asked if she could go upstairs to change clothes. She went upstairs alone for a while. Why didn't she use the upstairs phone to call the police?

my Uncle, Earl Heflin (Sheriff of Converse County, Wyoming) helped catch Starkweather & Caril in Douglas Wyoming. The only thing Uncle Earl would ever say about Starkweather was "he was a yellow coward." Townsfolk of Douglas said it was Uncle Earl who really shot Starkweather in the ear, causing a lot of blood & Starkweather to scream "I'm dying!" But the FBI took credit. It's horrifying. I can't watch the movie. I know too much.

Caril seemed a bit mature for fourteen. How did she know to put her baby sister's name in the note she wrote and the police would figure out her baby sister can't write because she was two and her last name was different from hers. That is thinking of a wise 14 year old.
A good film. I like gritty crime dramas anyways and this is a well-made, well-written, well-acted film about a true story.
You should watch Rillington Place that Tim Roth is also in. It's another gritty crime drama.

I have read countless books and magazines on Charlie Starkweather and seen loads of documentaries about him and i am totally convinced that Caril Ann Fugate was Guilty. Charlie had nothing to gain from saying that she was as guilty as he was/
Nothing to gain? He said," if I can't have you no one will." Do you think he'd let her move on and live her life? You know the police told him she was testifying against him. They always do that to get criminals to turn on each other. His gain was revenge on her for her supposed betrayal against him and peace of mind that no man shall have her ever again. Duh.
She had multiple chances to run away, Ask HELP! ..... In a Gas station she bought 4 hamburgers and waited almost 2 hours for him, he was stoling a car meanwhile. ..

When they brought her in she was crying and screaming for her mother and baby sister. She was a victim too.. People forget this bit of information. Also remember she was only 14 and was very traumatised. Charlie lied and he changed the story multiple times while Caril always said she was innocent. So many things could have proved her innocence back then but people in the court were corrupt. Her note for help mysteriously disappeared. They did not care. After so many years she still suffers the burden that corrupt court had given.
Charles Starkweather wanted to watch and make the world burn. When Starkweather realized that his destiny was the electric chair and that he will never be free to harm another victim, he chose to harm Caril Ann.

EXPEDIENT JUSTICE. The psycho was fried 18 months after the arrest. Flash forward a few decades and they probably don't even go to trial within 18 months, followed by 15 years on death row. And what was so cruel or unusual about electrocution. Did any convict ever file a complaint afterwards.
Thank you for posting this. I'm particularly moved by what you're saying about Caril. (My grandfather was her attorney, and what you're saying was why he believed in her. Also, there are many reasons to believe in her innocence, including the fact that she left clues for the police.) But as for Texas, yeah, they wanted to shoot in Nebraska, but no incentives, and they were concerned about protests. It turned out to be the first movie Renee Zellweger was ever in. (She played Caril's sister.)
Sorry! The one that stands by and watch, then facilitates is just as guilty! She could have found away when he wasn’t around to tell the police. She wore the stolen bracelet proudly! When she got tired of running and looking over her shoulders that’s when she started leaving clues!

i watch a criminal psychologist say some of the crimes were definitely done by female. Like that young boy and girl where the female was attacked it wouldn't have been done by him it would have been done by a female. But no one knows for sure but them and God and their victims.

My great grandfather was the one that tried his case, and he gave him the electric chair, but I believe she was just sentenced to prison and walks free today.

Chia Sanzes you know that basically each State that actively or just legally have death penalty use lethal injection. In some specific cases it’s offered to the prisoner to choose which method use for its execution.
Electrocution in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.
Lethal gas in Arizona and California.
Firing squad in Utah, Mississippi and Oklahoma.
In four states (Arizona, Kentucky, Tennessee and Utah), the alternative method is offered only to inmates sentenced to death for crimes committed prior to a specified date (usually when the state switched from the earlier method to lethal injection).
Extremely rarely and and *only in case of lethal injections shortages* it’s used a backup method.
Electrocution in Arkansas, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Tennessee.
Lethal gas in Alabama, California, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and Wyoming.

For those who might have an issue with their ages when they were dating, it was relatively common back in that time.
Actually that was the biggest issue with Caril Ann's mother and stepfather. At the time they met, Charlie was 18 and Caril Ann was 13.
Fugate got out of prison after only 17 years.

He had my grandfather come, too, and there were some heads at his house, though he wasn't much of a hunter outside that. You're right, the story has reached legendary status and won't go away.

NBK was a combo of a lot of different murderer couples mixed with Charles Manson etc. There is an Oliver Stone interview where he goes in depth about what influenced him when he directed it and Tarantino who wrote the screenplay

I remember when the first murder occurred ,this December of 57 and the muder said continued into January 58, I was at my grand parents in east Texas for Christmas ,when the story went national ,America was in a state of shock and so were my parents and grands parents,they were still remembering the exploits of Bonnie and Clyde and they couldn't believe these two kids were worse than b and c ,there was fear in many states of America, so very sad
you were fortunate to live in those long lost days... despite these crimes

I love that last shot of the car driving by and the gray sky, very grim and some of the best music ever for a tv movie.
Yeah me too but in my own opinion I would make two changes with the ending and they are.
1. Instead of Charles Starkweather driving Chester Lauer Ward's Packard Patrician he took Merle Collison's Buick if he had succeeded in turning off the parking brake.
2. Deputy William Romer arriving at the scene much later and giving Charles Starkweather enough time to kill Joe Sprinkle making him his 12 and last victim.
P.S. I would also add another 2 mins and 16 seconds to the first part and then 1 min and 58 seconds to the second part thus making each of the two parts of the TV miniseries 1:30:00
She didn’t fear him. There were so many opportunities to escape. Stop making accuses for this monster. She is as guilty as he is!

This came on when I was 10. I watched the first part and that night had nightmares. Needless to say I didn't catch the second part.
I did. Watched the whole thing. Read the book her lawyer wrote too. Couldn't imagine that scenario, being 14, having to stay w your bf who killed your folks and baby sister.
She must have felt she was walking through nonreality and all the time afraid one false move would get her killed too.
Not saying she might not have been just as bad, but that experience, I think, would have unnerved Satan.
Well crafted 1st class crime story movie. I am glad that I found this movie.
I believe she fear him but at the same time she did things that was wrong that made her guilty by federal. Law

She said so many times that she didn't like what was going on .... I'm not defending her cause she's a female it just seems like she was just a scared little girl trying not to get killed like the rest of them

This version is soooo much better than the 2004 version, and way more historically accurate than that version too. I couldn't find the 2004 movie online so I actually bought the DVD.l, what a waste of money that was.

Haunting, cruel, very good. Maybe because it is judging society, not the individuals who have no chance to develop any sensivity, wisdom or remorse... Sad but true.
Back then and especially in that area in a small town it was typical to see people with guns. People took guns everywhere so seeing somebody on the side of the road with a gun wasn't much to be nervous about or you'd be a nervous wreck living back then and there.
this is a good movie, saw it when it first came out 20 years ago...true story , I think she was in on it... I also saw this story on bio-story...

agreed...Caril Ann was actually the driving force behind his murders..a previous girl who date Charlie said "he was one of the finest boys I've ever known", he would bring her mother groceries, do homework with her, he never even so much as made a move on her, he didn't smoke, he didn't drink...when he met Caril though..it was just a perfect storm...Charles actually wanted to turn himself in..but Caril wouldn't have that...

The original Badlands with Martin Sheen & Sissy Spacek is a classic.
Never saw it. Love both of them. Martin Sheen is a natural tear jerk maker and Sissy Spacek is pure vulnerability.

She killed no one and at 14 her reasoning abilities were very immature. She was a child being mentally manipulated by a psychopath, and she feared him.
Sweelen Simpson she served her time and was a model prisoner and has not been in any trouble at all since her release. Prison didn’t rehabilitate her...they never do...she didn’t need rehabilitation she wasn’t the psychopath.

She was such a model inmate, she was allowed to go into town unaccompanied cause they knew she come back. Even before she dated him, she had no juvenile delinquencies. She hasn’t done any criminal activity since she been out. So if she was a criminal mastermind and a psychopath. She would’ve found some way to continue doing wrong cause those types don’t change. If she did anything it was cause he held a 🔫 on her.
