There was so much anger and animosity in our home, I have had to face my own demons in me carrying out much of that with my children/family. I realized years ago I had a choice, stay and be a part of the insanity or walk away and I chose the latter. To this day I have extremely limited contact and live across the country now.

I lived this unfortunately. My mother was a single mother of 5 children and my grandmother lived with us. My mom was terribly emotionally abusive to her. My grandmother was high maintenance, and the meaner my mom was to her - the more she shut down. She stopped bathing, eating doing anything. We kids didn't know any better and weren't the nicest to her either. I resented her because she was embarrassing. It makes me very sad now as an adult. This movie brings light to a very important issue.

My mother died almost 30 years ago and had stopped speaking to me and never came around. My father, now in his '90's never acknowledged it. He now has dementia and in in an assisted living because h needs professional care. I know at this point, he can't acknowledge what happened so I will never hear an 'I'm sorry' or for him to ask forgiveness.

Sadly, Geraldine Fitzgerald herself began to develop Alzheimer's/dementia in the late 80s and early 90s, which prevented her from working beyond that period. Her last work was a 1991 TV movie that was filmed in 89/90. She battled the disease for 15 years, before passing away in 2005. One of her first films was in 1939 with Bette Davis, they remained friends throughout until Davis's passing in 1989.

I agree. This was....and still is.....a seldom-discussed topic in the media. That also that abuse isn't always physical with the elderly. It can be financial or emotional. The adult child controls the money, the buying or use of medications, etc. etc. But this film not only explored elder abuse, it explored how it can be CYCLICAL...that the elder mom here wasn't as 'innocent' as she was first depicted: She herself was an abuser too. I wish films on these subjects were made more often.

My mother used to try and kill me. I would sleep in the bathtub because it was the only door she couldn't get through. I think some of the difference was when she was older, she wasn't violent, but it was definitely a hate/love relationship. She never would admit or apologize for what she did. When she was older, same thing, sick kids/going through a divorce I would get mad at her for different reasons and scream at her. So much rage. She would sit there and say, I don't know why she dislikes me in this sweet voice in front of people. One time I had to take her to the emergency room, I knew it was going to get heated so I asked for the kids to be able to sit outside in the waiting room. They said they were too young. I had the nurse stand outside the door and listen in. She started calling all kind of vile names for bringing her to the hospital. I went outside the nurse was flabbergasted. They had someone sit with the kids. I hated my rage, I wanted to fogive her, she really did try to step up. Just so sad.

I also really like watching his brother Joaquin Phoenix. But I wish the two of them would have had the chance to make a film together, with both being matured actors.
I'm so sorry that River died and how he died. May he rest in peace and may his family find comfort in their wholesome memories. 🙏🏻

You're so right about that, Sara. After my dad died, the one fear my mom had, was being put into a nursing home. She was so fiercely independent, that the thought of losing that, made her lose sleep. Her fear came true, though, at the age of 86, she could no longer care for herself and had to be put into a nursing home. She became very depressed and died within a year of moving. Her death surprised everyone because she wasn't gravely ill. I told my brother that she likely just gave up on life. One of my sisters had been with her that day, and just stepped out for a bite to eat. When she came back, mom was dead.

@@user-mj8nf2vp7q That's so nice of you to say, Justin. My older brother had power of attorney and it broke his heart to move her from her apartment. I nurse came to check on her and determined she could not take care of herself any longer, so she called my brother. She showed early signs of dementia. I'm glad my sister just happened to be in the same city, for a few days. The rest of us are scattered in different cities. Your comment is so lovely. You'll never know how much I appreciate your words. It's very comforting.

@@deedeegreen8338 It's not always easy to care for an aging parent. None of us knows how we will handle it until it happens. We're fortunate enough to live very near my Mom, but not all of us are that fortunate. Sadly, many women end up divorced or widowed and more dependent on their children as they age. We've had our share of ER visits and accompanying to Dr's. appointments, but Mom's still with us. We all worry about our aging parents, just as they worried about us as we were growing up. Our roles tend to reverse as we too grow older. God Bless!

@@user-mj8nf2vp7q So true after my mom died my dad had a series of strokes. It was hard having to look after him and take him to his appointments. The last four years of his life he had to go in a home. A few months before he died I did not recognise him anymore. It was very sad to watch him slowly decline.

(SPOILERS) While I feel the mutual abuse issue is never fully dealt with, this movie does well in portraying how such a relationship can escalate over time. It's got a great cast that puts in sincere, collective effort. As far as long lost River Phoenix, it's a total pre-Stand Bye Me find. Geraldine Fitzgerald had the same dedication in the '80's as she did in the '40's, and I have always loved later Tuesday Weld's intensity like in Play It As It Lays.

    • @AnonymousC-lm6tc

“Mutual abuse” is a myth and a false concept unsupported by data and actual DV experts.
Abuse is characterized by an imbalance of power and one party is the main aggressor over the other, using their leverage to manipulate and control their victim.
